ILLUSIONS
The
night was splintered by a piercing cry.
Another terrifying nightmare.
Adam ran into the hall. Ben was right behind him.
“I’ll go, Pa…Please, let me go.”
Joe was sitting upright…his senses reeling and dazed.
Joe was sitting upright…but he was fast asleep.
“Shh, Joe, lay down.”
Gentle hands caressed Joe’s sweaty brow.
Adam’s soothing voice murmured reassurances until Joe was lulled back into
serene slumber.
“I’m here for you, Joe…I’ll always be here for you.”
The mask had once more been stripped away.
The unemotional, granite head Yankee loved his brother more than life itself.
