Shattered Glass
There they were a group
of
lovlier young ladies as ever graced a
summer dance as any of the Cartwright lads were likely to see.
Joe had spent his usual time combing his luscious curls just so and
Adam
ever the debonair one chose a white shirt that made his black
hair
glisten in the light.
Joe made his way over to Adam. He pulled a face and heaved a heavy
sigh.
"What's up with them?" Joe mused, "I've been here an hour
and none of
the girls have said yes to a dance."
Adam's brow was knit and his lower lip drew back in confusion.
"Seems
like the ladies have other ideas."
"Last time I made a date with Adam he was supposed to get
tickets to
the show at the Piper Opera House. I was looking forward to it for
weeks
and the night of the show we went to dinner. He said he couldn't
get the
tickets, they'd been sold out!" Sally whispered to her companion
"Well I made a date with Adam and that very same week he left for a
business trip to
"And that Little Joe...do you know he asked me to go with him
behind
the
wagon? What was that boy thinking?"
Jennifer confided huffily. "Well when I went to the dance with Joe,
he
took a moonlight walk with Annie. He's got a nerve" It seemed the
flowers of
advantage of" by those Cartwright boys.
"May I have this dance, Sue" Adam asked the young
lady cooingly.
"Oh, excuse me Adam." she stammered
"it's so warm in here I think I'll go powder my nose." she said
and
rushed off.
"Priscila, would you..." Joe didn't get a chance to get out his
question.
"Joe, I've promised this dance to your brother."
Hoss came over just then and showed the young woman onto the floor
"Look at him, will you Adam?" Joe
hissed, "Just look at him!"
Adam raised his eyebrow and sighed.
Later when the crowd was thinning out
the Cartwrights decided it was getting late and had better start for
home
Adam and Joe glared at Hoss who obviously was having a great time.
Hoss
ambled over to his brothers with hands on his lapels a broad grin
splitting his happy face.
"That'll teach you two smart alecks! When I ask a gal to a
dance
I
pick her up on time and I don't go wandering off with another one.
And I
pay attention to her. Jennifer says I act like a real gentleman, not
fresh as some she can mention. Yep,
you gotta know how to handle women. And I do!"
Hoss set his hat jauntily on his head and walked out the door.
"Are you coming?" he yelled behind him
Adam and Joe stared at each other with
their chins scraping the floor.
