Author, Author

Adam boarded the stage from San Francisco heading back home after 3 long weeks of business meetings, negotiations and finally a solid timber contract for the next three years. He was feeling tired but knew his family would benefit greatly after today. Adam had picked up some presents for his brothers and his father. He also indulged and bought a few new books for himself. One local author, Jul Pendren, was a favorite of Adam’s. What captured Adam about this author was his ability to blend of what is happening with a city or part of the country mixing a story with of the most interesting characters. His last book however, had left Adam a little disappointed. He actually written a letter to this author and told him so.

As the stage was about to leave a late passenger arrived. She got on the stage a little bit disheveled. The driver grunted a comment on keeping his stage on time. She apologized to the driver and they were off. Trying to pull her appearance together, the late passenger adjusted her hat and skirts. Her small valise slipped from her hands spilling it’s contents. “Oh my I am clumsy, would you mind sir.” She said trying to compose herself. Adam bent over picking up the two books and other contents of the valise from the floor of the stage.
Picking up one of the books Adam recognized the cover.
“Jul Pendren, I read his books also. I was disappointed in this one. Let me introduce myself, I am Adam Cartwright.” Adam said giving her a respectful nod.

“Meag Katlin, please to meet you Mr. Cartwright.” Meag said politely.

Adam noticed this young woman couldn’t have been much older than he was. A young woman traveling alone was not too common in these parts. The rest of the passengers consisted of an older man who introduced himself as Clyde Bartlow. He was a rancher from Oregon coming out to Carson City to visit family. A young couple, who could hardly keep their eyes off each other introduced them selves pronouncedly as Mr. And Mrs. Edward Childs. They were just married a few days ago and were heading toward their new life near Virginia City. Meag Katlin got into friendly conversations with all of them. She was outgoing and personable except to Adam, which she seemed to ignore.

At the first stage stop before Carson City, the passengers all got out to refresh themselves and stretch their legs. Adam was going to find out if he had somehow offended Miss Katlin in anyway. He offered her a piece of candy he had bought (mainly for Hoss) as a peace offering.

“Oh lemon drops, my favorite. Thank you Mr. Cartwright. I should have brought some myself, I had no idea how dry these trips could be.” Miss Katlin said.

“I wanted to apologize if I had offended you earlier, I hope that is not the case.” Adam said earnestly.

“I must apologize to you sir. You see, my employer is Jul Pendren. I am actually coming out here to do some research. I guess your comment hit home sort to speak. I must quit being so
sensitive.” She said with a mischievous grin.

Adam was taken aback. “You are traveling out here to do research for Mr. Pendren? I am surprised he isn’t with you even as an escort. This is no country for a woman traveling alone. If I may say so Miss.” Adam said.

“Jul Pendren is ill, he asked me to go in his stead. If you will excuse me Mr. Cartwright I need to uh freshen up before going back on that stage.” Meag left to join the other female passenger.
She and the other woman went off together to the privy provided by the stage line.

For the next few hours Miss Katlin simply made some notes in a journal and enjoyed the scenery.
She was a little perturbed about Mr. Cartwright’s perception of her as a helpless female. She had been taking care of herself since age 13 and made a pretty good living for herself. But he had a point. She may need to be ‘escorted’ or her research would be rebuffed by the towns woman folk or hindered by some aggressive men. That wouldn’t do at all. Since he was so concerned, maybe she could ask him...’oh I better rethink that,’ Meag said to herself.

As the stage arrived in Virginia City, Adam was greeted warmly by his family. “How was your trip son?” Ben asked giving Adam a quick slap on the shoulder.
“Very good Pa, very interesting. You got my telegram about the contract?” Adam asked.
“Yes, I am very proud of you son, very proud. In fact we are having a little party Saturday to celebrate. I had asked some our closest friends.” Ben said.
As the other passengers were disembarking, Adam turned and helped Meag Katlin down. “Miss Katlin this is my father, Ben Cartwright, my brothers Hoss and Joseph.”

“Nice to meet you all. Your son tells me you have a ranch out here. I am doing a research project for my employer, would it be an imposition if I ride out there soon and observe your ranch activities?”
Adam noticed his father’s confused expression.
“Miss Katlin researches for Jul Pendren, the author.” Adam said watching for his father’s reaction.

“You are more than welcome to come to our ranch. In fact, I would like to extend an invitation for Saturday and Saturday night, we are having a party to celebrate my son Adam’s success on a business contract.”

“That would be lovely Mr. Cartwright. I have a room reserved at the hotel, I hope to find the livery will rent me a horse and carriage. I will see you Saturday. Until then sir I bid you adieu.” Meag said turning herself toward the International Hotel.

“She is kinda purty there older brother. Sure you didn’t want to ask her out tonight?” Hoss said

with a wink to Joe.
“Yeah, you are losing your charm older brother. I am surprised Pa had to be the one to set up a “date” and not you.” Joe said with a chuckle.

“Leave your brother alone boys, he is tired from his trip and needs to get home to a good hot meal, right Adam.”
“Yes sir that is right. And as far as your concerned, Miss Meag Katlin is only interested in ‘researching’ her employer’s book, nothing else.”
“Seems she did some research on Adam already and didn’t like what she found out.” Hoss said with a chuckle.
“Yeah, well that wouldn’t take long. I suppose the trip on stage was one too long for poor Miss Katlin.” Joe said not in a fit of giggles.

“Pa, can you do something here?” Adam said rolling his eyes.

“Boys I said leave Adam alone. He has had a LONG trip and needs you two to be quiet.”

“Okay Pa, let’s get him home.” Hoss said pushing his older brother on the shoulder.

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Meag found the Hotel clerk to be condescending and reluctant to let her check in. “I am very tired sir, you got my reservation and my advance for the room what is the problem?”

“I had no idea you were such a young girl. It could be very improper...”

“I am a woman of independent means, I am sure my money spends the same, I assure you my business here is very proper. In fact the Cartwright family...’ Meag was saying when she was interrupted.

“Oh the Cartwrights know you? Well enough said Miss, my apologies. Here I will even upgrade your room to the suite above no extra charge.” Mr. Moore said almost tripping on his way to get her bags upstairs in a hurry.

Meag realized by mention of the Cartwrights, many doors opened for her readily. She would explain this to Mr. Ben Cartwright, hoping he did not mind too much. But being a young woman out here alone did have disadvantages.

Saturday came quickly for Meag Katlin. She rented a carriage from the livery. Getting specific directions from the General Store owner, she prepared to spend the day and the evening by taking along her evening dress for the party but dressed in her split skirt and blouse. The long ride out to the ranch was made shorter by enjoyment of the scenery. The smell of the pines was sweet. She pulled off the road to rest, water the horse and check her directions. The creek she stopped by was inviting. Taking off her shoes she waded in the shallow part. This brought back memories from her childhood, however short her childhood was. Her father often took her fishing and camp outs. They talked of stars, his adventures and told her wonderful stories. Just as she was drying her feet, a sound from the bush alerted her senses. The hairs on the back of her neck prickled. The horse stomped nervously. Slowly but with determination Meag got herself back in the buggy taking the reins in hand. Just as she had them in her grip she slapped the reins against the rump of her horse and the carriage jerked forward roughly. She held on tightly. Looking back to the trail she saw it. A large adult puma heading for the same creek.. Looks like I just met my first puma, she said with her heart in her throat.

She didn’t realize she was driving barefoot until she actually reached the ranch. Hop Sing came out of the house first to help her down. “Hop Sing help Miss, where are shoes?”
Meag looked embarrassed. Mr. Sing, I have them back here, I had an incident on the way when I stopped to water my horse, I had to get the he-heck out of there fast, so I didn’t have time to lace up my boots again.
Adam was the second one out of the house after hearing the carriage in the yard. He was a little pink cheeked when he came out and Miss Katlin was slipping on her boots on her exposed calves.
She did have nice legs he thought, then walked up to her.
“Usually people dress then get in the carriage.” Adam said with an amused smile on his face.

“Usually people don’t get chased by wild cats after dipping their toes in a creek. I just didn’t have time to lace of my boots” Meag said with a little too much anger.

“Wild cats, are you alright?” Adam said concerned.

“Yes, just scared a little, sorry I was abrupt. My heart is still in my throat. Not a very conventional way to meet again.”

Adam helped her down. “I will put your carriage up and water your horse. Hop Sing will take you inside. We love a good story around here, this one sounds like one for Mr. Pendren.” Adams said with dimpled charm.

“Thank you Mr. Cartwright. I will see you inside.” Meag said finishing putting on her boots.

“Please call me Adam.”

“If you call me Meag.” She said warmly and let Hop Sing show her the way to the great room inside. “This is wonderful, who designed this great room?” Meag said not seeing Ben approach.
“My son Adam did, hello Miss Katlin. Nice to have you here, welcome dear.” Ben said extending his hand. Meag squeezed his hand in return. “Adam you have a rare gift.” She said sincerely.
Adam looked a little flushed by the attention. “Thank you Miss Katlin.”
“Thank you sir for inviting me here today and to your party tonight.”
“You are entirely welcome young lady. I will leave Adam to show you around this afternoon.” Ben said giving his son a gentle push. He seemed a little dazed. Ben smiled to himself as he left the two alone.
The afternoon was a busy one. Adam showed Meag the ranch as much as he could in a short time. She took notes and asked a lot of questions. She asked if he would show her the lake sometime, he readily agreed. He asked her if may escort her to church tomorrow and the Sunday picnic afterwards. She agreed only if she could be of some help today, getting the party off the ground.
“I could help Hop Sing with the kitchen chores, he seems to have a lot on his plate today.” Meag said as they returned to the house.
“You are a guest I would not think of it.” Ben said.
“Sorry Adam, deal is off about church and the picnic, your father won’t let me help.” Meag said amusing herself.
Ben looked at the young city girl in a new light. “Alright, but don’t wear yourself out, I want the first dance tonight.”
“Of course, I am looking forward to it Mr. Cartwright.”
Meag helped as if she belonged there. She was so easy to talk to the boys each warmed to her instantly. They liked her immensely. Adam and Meag were assigned the task of hanging the lanterns outside for the Bar B Que.
“Hand me that lantern over there,” Adam said from the ladder.

“Are you color blind?” Meag said with her hands on her hips.
Adam surveyed his work.
“No I am not color blind. What’s the problem, did I perform a color foo-pa or something?” Adam said with amused smile.
“I’ll say..you have a red lantern next to the orange one, a pink one next to that.“ Meag said.
“Ok Miss, you color size this up and I’ll take a break. But people in these parts won’t even notice the lanterns once they smell that meat on the spit, I promise you.” Adam said.

“Just get down and take your break. I am determined to fix this so you might as well make yourself useful by getting out of my way.” Meag said grinning.
In one hour she had the lanterns arranged, the flowers on the tables and the table cloths down. She was a whirlwind of energy. Ben, Hoss and Little Joe walked outside to admire her work.

‘This looks very nice, very nice. Just needed a woman’s touch. I miss that around here.” Ben said wistfully. His Marie had the same flair.
“Mr. Cartwright, may I use one of your rooms to get ready for the party?” Meag said wiping her brow.
“Of course my dear. You brought everything you need? I do have some things of my late wife’s if you may have left something in town.” Ben said softly.

“I thank you, but I think I have all I need. If you could direct me to the room I may use.” Meag said.
Hop Sing prepared the spare room for her to use for changing. He even put a tub in there if she felt a need to bathe. She was feeling pretty at home here thanks to her hosts.
The guests started arriving shortly after 5 o’clock. The smell of the meat on the spit filled the air. Ben had hired a band to play so all could dance. Ben received many compliments on the set up, he quickly told everyone it was Meag Katlin who deserved the praises. Some of the ladies were tongue wagging about this young lady who was traveling alone and now has finagled her way into the Cartwrights good graces. One particular lady did not like this one bit, Abigail Jones. She was obsessed with winning Adam as hers. She would be damned if a city gal would come between her and Adam.

Meag helped Hop Sing in the kitchen much to his surprise. Another surprise was that she spoke Chinese. She told him that for a time when she was a small girl, her father and her lived in the Orient. Children picked up languages more easily than adults. She often helped her father with trade when language was a barrier.
Hop Sing told her to go out to the party and enjoy herself. It took some convincing but he insisted. She came out in her green taffeta and ivory lace dress. Her hair she fixed partly up and the rest went down her back in long black curls. Adam looked up and felt like he was struck with a lightening bolt. She noticed him also. He looked so dashing in his white shirt, silk black tie and the cut of the suit he wore fit him all in the right places. Taking a step or two down the stairs she took it slow. Her knees felt weak for some reason. Adam took her hand as she reached the bottom step. He introduced her around to friends. When it was Miss Jones turn to meet the girl, Abigail made it point to make it known that Adam was off limits. “Miss Abigail Jones this is Meag Katlin, she is visiting from San Francisco.”
“You traveled here alone? Don’t you have an escort or family?”
“Nice to meet you too.” Meag said with a smile. She ignored the fact the pleasantries were ignored.
I do have family Miss Jones but they are mostly elderly aunts that live in Minnesota and Kansas. I live in San Francisco, I am out here on a research project for my employer. The Cartwrights were nice enough to invite me here today, I am very grateful.”
“Oh how grateful are you?” Miss Jones said with implications of improper behavior.
Adam was about to intervene when he caught a look from Meag. She stepped closer to Abigail.

“Miss Jones if you have something to say to me, say it plain. I told you why I am here, not that I have to tell you any of my personal business. I am hoping you and I could be friends, I understand you teach school out here. I would be interested to sit in on some of your class sessions as research for my employer’s book. There may even be a chapter that can be dedicated to the teaching of children of the territories.” Meag said.

Miss Jones didn’t know what to say after that. She tried to insult this woman and she ends up wishing she hadn’t. Imagine her being a chapter in a book. She humbly nodded to Miss Katlin and told her she would arrange for her to come visit the school.

Adam was angry at Abigail but very proud of Meag on how she handled her. “Nice work Meag”, Adam said lowly in her ear.

“I am used to the Miss Jones’ types from my travels. I have a feeling I was walking into ‘marked territory though. You and her are an item?” Meag said looking up into Adam’s eyes.
Adam almost choked on his punch.
“Heavens no, but my brother’s would say you hit the nail on the head.”
“Well if I were her I would set my sights on Mr. Ben Cartwright, he seems the most handsome of the bunch.” Meag teased.
“Oh I am hurt beyond belief.” Adam said surprised at her bantering.
“Don’t get me wrong, you are no slouch.” Meag said unrelenting her teasing.
“Well I guess I should say ‘thank you’ for that compliment.” Adam said with a smirk.
“Now if Joe were just a bit older. And there’s your brother Hoss, he is the big catch. Gentle and strong.
“‘Big’ being the optimum word. Yes my brother Hoss is a gentle person, as for Joe, at 13 his horse Cochise is his love of his life.” Adam said showing his dimpled smile.

Meag was smitten and she didn’t know just how to react. He looked like something you would win as a prize. Why did he look at her that way, I must be an odd duck to this man. Meag’s mind was going in all directions. It was a touch to her arm that brought her back to her senses.
Ben Cartwright came across the room to her. As the waltz was played, Ben Cartwright took his rights to Meag for the first dance..

“My dance young lady.” Ben said tearing her away from his oldest.
‘I would love too, your eldest son seems earth bound tonight.” Meag said over her shoulder.
Adam realized he had not even asked her to dance, she must think him a bumble headed fool.

“Meag I am so glad you came out today. Not many women impress my friend Hop Sing and my sons the way you do.” Ben said easily leading her around the dance floor.
“Thank you Mr. Cartwright. I did want to speak to you.” Meag said looking up. He was a formidable man, she felt completely small being near him.
“How about we talk at the picnic, just you and I. We will have this town buzzing yet.” Ben said with a twinkle in his eye.
“Yes sir, we will won’t we.” Meag said smiling.

As the evening closed, Adam took Meag back to town. He tied Sport to the back of the carriage and they talked and talked about the west, his journey out west, her many journeys with her father.
“Adam I had such a wonderful time. I want you to know that. I also want you to know I am a good listener if you ever need a friend.”
Being friends was not what he had in mind at the moment. The moon was full, he had never felt so at ease with a woman in his life.
“I appreciate that Meag. I feel so at ease with you. Do you feel the same?” Adam said glancing sideways at her for a reaction.

She looked at him and squeezed his arm. “Yes I do. I wish this night could go on and on. But it would only delay our plans for tomorrow. I am looking forward to attending your church and the church picnic.”
She was trying desperately not to show him how he was effecting her, she was totally off balance with this man.
Adam slowed the carriage. “I have an important question for you. I hope you don’t think me a cad in any way.” Adam said seriously.

“I said you could be open with me Adam, what is it?” Meag said quietly.

Stopping the carriage completely he scooted closer to her gently. “May I kiss you Meag?” Adam said.
They were alone, in the dark with the smell of pine and a soft breeze. A perfect setting as if written in a chapter of a Jul Pendren paragraph. Meag had to smile to herself. This is better than that she said to herself.
Meag smiled at him but did not invite his lips to hers.
“I am afraid if I kiss you Adam Cartwright, I could never stop kissing you. And there we would be days on end, kissing. You and I would end up with swollen lips and empty bellies.”

“Is that a yes or a no.” Adam said sarcastically.

“No. It’s too easy to loose control, look at that moon. It’s the moon Adam, not me. You have moon sickness.

Adam rolled his eyes. “Alright and just how do I cure this moon sickness.” Adam said slapping the reins of the horse to walk on.

She put her head on his arm. “By stopping this damn thing taking me over there by those trees and kissing me until I beg for you to stop.”

Adam stopped the carriage. He looked at her searching her eyes. What he saw was a glint of mischief.
She chuckled the moment he realized he was being teased.

“Don’t you tease me Meag Katlin I am liable to do just that.” Adam said lustily.

“Adam, we have to think with our brains not our bodies. We should take this slow.”
She did not expect to deny herself this kiss she wanted more than air, but knew one of them had to be strong. He was trying to control himself but she made it so difficult.

Blushing, Meag scooted a bit away from him. “I think I owe you an apology Mr. C. Meag said.

“Oh what about?” Adam said not looking at her.
“I didn’t mean to start you thinking we could uh...you know.” Meag said looking downward.

“I see, and why did you say I should take you over there etc..” Adam said biting back what that very thought did to him.
“I wanted your reaction, and I was surprised at my own reaction to you, I almost gave into it. I have feelings for you. Would you have uh ‘taken me?’
Meag said ashamed he would think so little of her as to compromise her but again it was her fault.
.
“I am a man Meag Katlin. If you think I would ‘take you’ as you put it without your consent, you are mistaken. But the way you talked to me I would think you wanted me to. If this is part of your research for a book, you damn well almost got more than you bargained for. You can’t talk to a man that way and expect him to back away. Don’t try that again or you will find out that I am no different from any other man.” Adam said a bit angry.

“Adam, you have to understand something..” Meag said dropping her eyes.

“No need, just promise me that you will not be so foolish with everyman you come across.”
Now it was her turn to be hurt. “Do you really think I would......that I could..” She cut off just as they entered the town.
Adam sighed deeply. He didn’t mean to hurt her feelings.
“I didn’t mean that, oh I don’t know what I mean, you have vexed me woman and that is a fact.”
Adam said truly frustrated.

“Adam I am sorry, I am worldly in many ways except in one. You know what that is I imagine. I speak my mind too openly, that I know. But I have been that way all my life, can’t change that.” She said gathering her things to go back in to the hotel.
Adam softened a bit. “I wouldn’t want you to. Let’s start fresh tomorrow. I will pick you up for church about 9 in the morning, you can sit with us Cartwrights.” Adam said extending his hand to help her down.

“Ok Adam, see you at 9 a.m., oh and Adam...”
“Yes Meag?” Adam said turning toward her..
“I really wanted that kiss.” Meag said as she ran toward the hotel giggling at the look on his face, all the way to her room.

The next morning Hoss and Joe noticed something particularly peculiar about older brother. “Pa had to snap him in the rump this morning to get him up.
“He was tossing and turning all night. I bet he only got about 1 hour sleep.” Hoss said to Joe.

“Boys breakfast is ready, now let’s eat and not be late to church.” Ben said.

“Yes Pa.” Hoss and Joe had to give their older brother a snicker at his appearance. Seems he was blurry eyed this morning.

“Adam what time did you roll in last night?” Hoss asked trying to goat his brother.

“I don’t know Hoss, why are you keeping track of me now?” Adam said sipping his hot coffee.

“Seems like you musta got home plenty late if Pa had to crack you one this morning to get up.”

Hoss if you don’t stop teasing I might just ‘crack you one’. Ben said giving a warning look to his middle son.

“Yes sir, sorry Adam, Pa.”

“What time did you tell Meag to be ready this morning Adam?” Ben asked

“About 9, she will be in the lobby waiting for me, I mean us.” Adam said not looking at his younger brothers.

“She sure is a nice person Pa, for a girl that is.” Joe said.

Chuckling at his son Ben agreed. “Yes son, for a young lady she is seems to be a wonderful person.”

As the Cartwrights took their usual pew in church with their added guest, some heads were turning. Meag had sat next to Hoss and Little Joe, much to Adam’s dismay. When the time came to sing a hymnal, Meag was please that the men of this family all had wonderful voices. Adam’s rich tones was a most pleasant surprise. After church the town folk gathered outside each speaking to the minister. Meag was introduced to many of the friends of the Cartwrights.
Adam noticed how warmly she greeted each of the ladies, especially the few who are known gossips of the town. Mrs. Browne considered herself a “socialite” and took Meag’s greeting at first with her proverbial nose in the air attitude. Meag managed to ask her a few questions. To Adam’s surprise and amusement Mrs. Browne was beside herself trying to accommodate the researcher of a book.
“I see you’re gaining both in prestige and popularity with the town gossips.” Adam said quietly to Meag. What did you say to her if I may ask?” Adam said with a smirk.
I simply mentioned that in the book I am researching, the author has mentioned his interest in the social attributes of Virginia City and would she introduce me to some of her contacts.”

“I hope there are enough chapters in the book. Meag to keep you in good graces with the ladies.” Adam said with an amused smile.
Meag really loved that smile. Last night’s almost kiss was still in her thoughts, she didn’t get much sleep..

“Miss Katlin?” Little Joe said coming up to her.

“Yes Joe what is it?” Meag said deliberately leaving off the “Little” in his name.

“Well my friends and I are going swimming later, would you like to go swimming with us?”
Meag slightly blushed.
“I don’t have a swimming costume but thank you for asking. I do love to swim. How about we do some fishing while I visit here sometime, I bet you know all the best fishing holes around. If that is alright with your father.” Meag said looking up at Ben.
Ben nodded and winked at his son.
“Yes ma’am that would great.” Joe said running off with his friends.
“You have impressed my 13 year old son, for a girl that is quit an accomplishment.” Ben said with a chuckle.

“Not as much as I am impressed by your family Mr. Cartwright.”

“Please call me Ben. Now you wanted to speak to me today. I am all ears my lady.”Ben said slightly bowing.

“Yes Ben if you please call me Meag. Let’s grab some pie and a blanket and go over there by the trees. We can talk there.” Meag said.

“Boys, Meag and I are going to talk over there.” Ben said gathering up a blanket while she carried two pieces of Hop Sing’s pie.

Adam was both amused and felt somewhat jealous that his father had this woman’s complete attention and he had not had two seconds alone with her.

“Ben, the reason I wanted to talk is two-fold. The most important thing is that I am a walking, talking lie.” Meag said with quiet tone.

Ben stiffened a little, lying was one thing he has detested. To think he may be disappointed in this girl saddened him.

“Please explain Meag.” Ben said locking her with his dark eyes.

“I am Meag Katlin, but I am also Jul Pendren, the author. People assume Jul Pendren is a man, I actually sell more books that way. But my last book had received less than favorable responses. I know what my mistake was, I hadn’t lived that life or researched that place long enough to come across to my readers. I failed, that was a blow Mr. Cart..I mean Ben.”
Relieved that she had not confessed a terrible lie, he was warmed by her honesty to her own feelings.
“I heard my son wrote a letter to this ‘Jul Pendren’ and expressed his displeasure of that book. Did you get his letter?”
“Yes, I have it in my satchel and carry it around as a reminder and penance of my own failure.” Meag said looking downward.
Putting a gentle index finger under her chin he lifted her chin upward to meet his eyes.
“You are a remarkable woman Miss Katlin. As for your failure you so call it, let me remind you of something. You are one wonderful author. Your talent comes alive on those pages, I am proud and honored you would confide in me. As for my educated son, he wrote you because he truly cares about your writing. He wasn’t judging you only reaching out to you out of pure admiration.

Meag’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you Ben, I think I needed to hear that”

“Now you said our meeting was two fold. What is the other reason we are setting the tongues wagging by being on this blanket.” Ben said teasingly.

Wiping her tears away, she looked up at him. “I am writing a book about this part of the country, the women, the struggles of the families who carved out a life here. But I lack the one on one knowledge. And watching someone brand a cow, chop wood, herd cattle and so on, does not make me feel it. I want to feel it, do these things and I am asking you ...”
“For a job?” Ben answered.

“Yes sir, I want to work on your ranch this summer. What do you say sir?” Meag said respectfully.

“You’re not serious” Ben said taken by surprise.

“Yes sir I am, this is my lively hood, I can’t risk another failure in my writing, it would be that much harder to gain the trust of my readers.”

“Ranch work is much too hard for a slip of a girl like you and besides that would involve my hands and my sons, you realize that.”

“Tell them I am researching, they will understand. As far as your sons, I see only one obstacle, your son Adam.” She said trying not to betray some feelings for him.

“Adam, yes he might be overly protective. That seems only natural to him. Especially for someone he cares about.” Ben said seeing right through her soul.

“Ben you talk it over with your family. Send word to me at the hotel.” She wanted him not to see her blushing. Ben Cartwright was so much like her father they could be brothers.

Ben took her hand, “Meag, I will have you over for dinner tomorrow night if that is alright with you and we will all discuss this as a family meeting.” Ben said winking a mischievous gleam in his eye. He had just met the woman his Adam would marry, he was sure of it.

Meag went off and gathered her wits. She found a few woman friends at the picnic and was determined to keep her distance from one Adam Cartwright for the rest of the day. In truth, Adam was on her mind since the buggy ride home from the party. But never experienced even liking a boy before, this man seemed to make her knees weak at the most inappropriate times.

Adam was feeling snubbed and he didn’t like it. His father had not told him what the business between her and him was concerning. If Pa wanted me to know, he will tell me. He said to himself. He overheard some ladies wagging their tongues about it. But he could only smirk if they thought it was anything but a conversation. She wanted something from Pa and he will wait for his father to tell him the details of it later. Adam caught her glancing at him as she walked over to Beth Martin and Beatrice Collins. They were her age so they must be talking about whatever the hell woman talk about.

“Miss Katlin, you seem to have stirred a hornet nest with some of the ladies. Not only were you talking with Ben Cartwright, but Adam Cartwright can’t seem to keep his eyes off you. What is your secret?” Beth said with a big grin.
“Just asking some questions. As for Adam, he thinks I am odd at best, I am afraid to say.”
“Oh I don’t think so. Ol’ Abigail Jones changed her tune about you though. She is all puffed up about you visiting the school for your book research. What is Mr. Pendren like?”
“Mr. Pendren, my employer, oh he is a fine man, about Mr. Cartwright’s age and very personable. I like him most the time. He can be impossible the other part of the time.”
“I guess it must be an adventure working like you do. I will probably marry some rancher and never see anything but the main street of Virginia City.” Beatrice said.

Tommy Lend and Luke Berg walked up to Meag, Beth and Beatrice. They were trying hard to impress the three, but only succeeded to repel them. Meag was more gracious. “I am sorry Luke and Tommy but I have been sent here to Virginia City to do research, I really don’t have much free time. Today was my day of rest.” Meag said nicely.

Adam watched closely. Luke caught a look from Adam and soon made his excuses and left quickly.
After all the games and food, Meag was exhausted. Again she was escorted by Adam back to the hotel. He seemed cooler to her, almost angry. She made pleasant talk but his responses were quick and polite. Oh how this did irrate her.

“So your brother Joseph is right.” She said not explaining any further.

Taking the bait, Adam looked at her sideways.

“What is Joseph right about, if anything, a thirteen year old could be right about.” Adam said.

“You are a moody cuss.” She said plainly.

“He said that did he? Well he will be ‘moody’ when I get my hands on him.” Adam said.
Meag squeezed his arm and chuckled.
He liked her touching him, he felt a need for her to be near him. His mind and his heart were at odds however. His mind said she was holding back some truth from him. His heart was screaming who cares just make her yours and shut up about the rest.

“Meag, I watched you today. You have me wondering. Why is this attractive, smart and may I say opinionated woman not married or engaged?”

“Adam, what is it with you men? If a female is not married or engaged she is strange or odd. I have met very few men who would accept me as I am. I like to work, I like to write, I am not a hot house flower waiting to be picked and pressed into a marriage. When the time comes I will know it and I will be a wife, mother and above all my own person. Not what some man wants me to be. For me to find such a match would be a challenge. Not too many men could accept me as an equal, just not his little homemaker and brood mare To tell you the truth, I can’t even boil water right. So there is little hope on that road to matrimony.”

“So let me get this straight. Mr. Perfect has to let you do what you want, don’t expect you to cook, put up with your smart mouth...am I leaving anything out?” Adam said sarcastically.
“If there is one thing I know Adam Cartwright. Men above all, are not perfect. Not even you.
But you left one thing out of that analysis, he must be prepared to be loved and never experience a dark lonely night.
She again left him with his mouth open as she went back into the hotel.

Adam and Little Joe picked up Meag at the hotel the next evening. Joe was just out of school and Adam killed two birds with one stone; seeing that his little brother got home and picking up their dinner guest.
“Meag so nice to see you.” Adam said holding out his hand to help her into the buggy. My she looks different tonight, maybe just out of the bath or...his mind wandered until she spoke.
“Nice to see you and how are you Joseph?” Meag said.
“Hi Miss Katlin, I’m glad you are coming out and having dinner with us, we can talk about our fishing trip on Saturday.”

“Yes we must plan. I am a big fan of fishing the high lakes.” Meag said sitting in the middle of Joe and Adam.
“You like to fish?” Adam said in surprise.
“Yes, I especially like catching rainbow trout and the big browns. They taste best over an open fire.” She said with the most adorable excitement over the prospect of fishing.
Joe and Meag talked about bait and secret fishing spots the whole way. Adam listened and was thinking of a way he could also go, but maybe his little brother wouldn’t want to have him horn in on his ‘date’ with Meag.

Ben greeted her with a warm smile. “Meag, I am so glad you could join us tonight. Hop Sing made a special dinner just for you. “Yeah and apple pie too, Adam wanted you to have that.” Joe said giggling.
“Boys, Meag and I have an important discussion for you boys tonight. It will involve all of us. Adam remembered how clandestine his father and Meag were at the picnic.
We will discuss it after dinner and during dessert.” Ben added.

During dinner the conversation led to one subject to another. Meag was an interesting woman.
Since age 13 when her father died, she worked for a professor and his family. He had given her room and board in exchange helping with the younger children of the family and helping his wife with the chores. At 15, she traveled with this family to Europe. She was able to enjoy museums and learned a few languages she quickly picked up on. She met a lot of different people in the world. Adam hung on every syllable of hers. Once in awhile she would say something funny or make a funny face sending Adam’s brothers into a teary eyed laugh. She told an Irish joke that Ben literally had tears running down his face from laughing so hard. Oh yes she fit, she was a perfect fit Ben thought. Now if my granite-head son would only snap to the task of wooing this delightful creature before someone else snaps her up.

“Well, boys I think we can adjourn to the living room with our pie and coffee. Miss Katlin and I have a proposal to discuss. The three brothers exchanged confused glances.
“Boys, Miss Katlin here needs our help. She is researching a book as you know. But to do that she has to experience ranch living, chores and our way of life out here. She will have to stay at the ranch to do this.”
“Wait a minute Pa, what do you mean experience ranch chores. You don’t mean branding, roping, stalls and such.” Hoss said.

“That is exactly what I mean Hoss. I can ride well. I would also like to go on a cattle drive at one point.” Meag said.

“Out of the question, the men we hire for that won’t be “gentlemen” if you know what I am saying Meag Katlin.” Adam said anger rising at her ridiculous proposal.

“I am asking as a friend, please I won’t be a bother. I have a lot of confidence this will be the best book Jul Pendren has ever published. Please Adam, won’t you help me?”

“But Pa, fence mending, branding, she will faint and then what.” Hoss said.

“Give me some credit Hoss Cartwright.” Meag said.

“Joe what do you think?” Meag asked going to her only hope besides Ben.

“Yes ask a 13 year old on his views of you taking away some of the chores.” Adam huffed.

“I think we can help her. Tonight in fact, she can help me clean out the stalls.”

“See Pa, this is ridiculous. If this book involves hard work, well Mr. Pendren should be the one doing the sweating, not this slip of a girl.” Adam said.

Ben looked over to Meag. She shrugged and in a sign of surrender she stood up.
“Adam Cartwright, I am Jul Pendren, nice to meet you.” Meag said reveling in the shocked look on his face.
“Well Miss Katlin or Pendren, you want to experience ranch life, who am I to stand in your way.”

Hop Sing arranged for a lady Chinese laundress to come out to the ranch. It would look better if another woman was out here. Lin Won Se was taken with Meag the moment they met. Meag gave her a bow of respect and started to speak her language to her. Lin Won Se relaxed as she was a little nervous Hop Sing would be disappointed in her. Lin Won Se had great respect for Hop Sing.

The first night at the Ponderosa was comfortably familiar, as if she was staying with close relatives. Joe introduced her to a game of checkers. Hoss snickered as she beat the pants off him.
“Well I am going to turn in, early morning tomorrow I hear. Good night all.” Meag said.
“Good night dear.” Ben said.
It was a short night. Adam had knocked on Meag Katlin’s door at an early 4:30 a.m. “Time for all little girls to be up and dressed for some rounding up strays before breakfast.”Adam said from her doorstop.
“Oh he was enjoying this much too much Meag thought getting her britches on. Hop Sing was more generous, he made her coffee early and handed her a cup. “You show eldest son what means to be up and ready. He said in Cantonese.”
Meag smiled getting his point, go out and show him a thing or two.

Out in the barn Adam brought out a black horse. He stood a good 15 ½ hands high. She was impressed with his lines. “You bred him out here or did you buy him?”
“Stormy is from our stock. He is like a rocking chair.” Adam said grabbing a saddle.
“I know how to saddle a horse, but I thank you Adam.” Meag said putting a blanket over the horse’s back. Hoss soon joined them, we will make this quick Adam, Hop Sing is making apple fritters for breakfast this morning I don’t want to be late for that.”
The three rode out with the sun barely on the rise.

“It will be hard for me to allow you to do a man’s work Meag, I hope you understand that.” Adam said briskly.
“Try real hard Adam.”Meag said glancing at him.
They rode for an hour then spotted some wandering steer. There in the gully, you need to smooth up to them then drive them towards the east, there should be more that way.” Adam said.
“How do you know that Adam?” Meag asked.
“Tracks, I see some of the herd broke off here then headed easterly. No wonder, there is a nice water hole that way. I make it a leader in the group has done this before, probably ol’ Stan is with this bunch.
Hoss was already heading out that way. He had fritters on his mind and nothing else.

“I will try Adam, I will catch up with you.” Meag said with more confidence than she was feeling at the moment. “Ol Stan indeed, probably ol Adam pulling my leg.”

Meag managed to get the three strays in a nice bunch heading on. She was so proud of herself she didn’t notice Hoss and Adam watching her from the ridge.
“See Adam she is doing alright, come on let’s get this done.” Hoss said.
Oh alright, but I have a problem with leaving her out her by herself. Would if....”
“Then stay galdangit, I will get the rest and meet you at the east corral, just let’s get this done.”

Meag drove them slowly then headed up a ridge. She looked quit natural in the saddle, Adam felt a little silly just sitting and watching. He couldn’t relax with her out here by herself. He would talk to his father and tell him the deal is off, he couldn’t work this way.
Hoss met her at the corral. “Now just prod them along, that’s it Meag, you are doing great.”
The last of the wanders was inside. “Hoss let’s go have some breakfast I am starving. Where is Adam?”
He should be along...there he is, empty handed.” Hoss said pointing.
“Yes well let’s get back, last one gets to clean the other’s stall” Meag vaulted on her horse and galloped home.
Hoss and Adam exchanged glances and raced behind her. She couldn’t beat Sport but Chub was no problem.
Washed up and ready to eat the three sat with Joe and Ben. Ben gave the morning blessing and for the next few minutes all was heard was food being served. “Oh Ben, your oldest here has to quit watching me like a chicken hawk. Really Adam, I will be ok.” Meag said.

“Pa I think we ought to rethink this. Meag is still a woman out there by herself and if a Paiute or some trapper or worse came upon her, god knows what could happen.”
“Adam Cartwright, I am sitting right here, see me...” Meag said slightly waving at him. I can carry and shoot a rifle if you like, or would that be a unfemine of me? Really Adam, have some faith in me.”
“You have no idea what this country is like young lady and I will...” Adam was interrupted by his good natured brother.
“I can take her to get started with the fences this morning. Pa, she can ride with me. Hoss offered.
“That sounds like the ticket.” Meag says. She was grateful for any experience, even though Adam was doing his upmost to cut that short.
“I got some things to do, I will see you all at supper.” Adam said.

“He is a stubborn one, that Adam.” Meag said to Ben.
Joe quipped with “Yeah that’s why we call him a Yankee Granite Head.”
“Joseph, do not talk about your brother that way. You see Adam has endured great loss in his young life, as my other sons. But his protective nature of women stems from his loss of his mother and my other wives.”
“Oh Ben I had no idea.” Meag said with profound sadness in her voice.

Lin Won Se was busy preparing the bath for Miss Katlin when she returned with Hoss.
Every inch of her was hurting. “Oh thank you, you read my mind.” Meag said slipping deep into the tub of hot water. Oh, this feels so good.” Meag was sore from head to backside, her muscles had new muscles.
Hoss told Adam how well she did, but still being a small woman, it must of been really hard for her to keep up.
Digging post holes and stringing wire all day, she must be hurting something awful.” Hoss said.
“Good, maybe she will forego this idiot scheme of hers.” Adam said washing off the trail dirt.

“Who you calling an idiot Adam Cartwright” Meag said with a stomp of her foot.
Hoss walked away, not willing to be drawn into this one.

“If you think you can learn in one short time what it is like to be apart of this country by doing some chores, then I am addressing you Meag Katlin.”

“I read your letter Adam S. Cartwright, and I quote “ If you have the very knowledge what it is like to actually be this far west then it would have showed in your last few chapters.”

“There is something else that was lacking my lady. Adam said coming nearer to her.

“What is that?” Meag said a little hurt.

“Passion, the same passion you can feel between a man and a woman as you would writing about this land. You have to......
She cut him off with a full mouth kiss, searching her tongue to taste him. He moaned in deep pleasure as she drew into his arms.

As he deepened the kiss she drew away. “You mean like that.” Meag turned and went to her room leaving Adam unable to show himself for a good while.

Saturday morning Meag and Little Joe went off on their fishing safari. Joe led her to his ‘hidden lake’. The ride was steep and at the end they ended up at a most wonderful fishing spot imagined. They pulled fish after fish out of this little hidden lake, Joe called Meadow Lake. Coming home, they were surprised to be met with Adam coming toward them. “Looks like fish tonight hey Joe?” Adam said eyeing the large catch.
“Yep, look at this one, Meag caught the biggest one.” Joe said bragging about her.
“You caught the most Joseph, you are a natural fisherman.” Meag said back to him.
“My brother Adam taught me, he taught me to ride too when I was a kid.”
“Pa sent me to fetch you two back.” Adam said saddling next to them.
“For a girl she sure can fish Adam.” Joe said.
“For a boy, you can too” Meag said laughing. “How about a race back home to the ranch. Last one cleans the other stalls.”
They were off, and again Sport took the lead. Cochise in dead heat with Meag’s horse Sugarfoot.
As they entered the yard, Sport was slowed to a respectable walk. Cochise and Sugarfoot came in together. “It’s a tie, we better not let Pa catch us racing in, he will get mad.” Joe said.
“Ok Joe, it’s a tie. I will do Cochise’s stall, you do Sugarfoot’s and we will both do Sport’s. That horse of his sure is fast.” Meag said.
“He isn’t all that fast, Adam says he uses ‘strategy when he races Hoss and I think he cheats.”
“Let’s go brag about our catch to Hop Sing and your Pa. Hoss and Adam can be jealous of us all night long. How does that sound?” Meag said tickling Joe in the ribs.
“Meag if you ever want to become a Cartwright, I wouldn’t mind it. Maybe Pa can adopt you or something. It would be fun having a big sister instead of all brothers.” Joe said.
That Joseph is the best compliment I ever heard. Thank you Joe.”

At supper, Adam had resigned himself to show this lady she will be his and remain safe from her own foolishness.
“Pa tomorrow we are starting to brand, maybe Miss Katlin would like to join Slim and I to the branding corrals.
“That sounds fine son, how about it Meag?” Ben asked.

“Sure why not. I never seen branding of cattle before.” Meag said not at all sure what Adam may have in mind.

Adam had Lin Won Se wake up Meag at the god awful hour of 4:30 a.m. even though he didn’t really plan to go to the branding corrals till after 7 a.m.
When he finally came down, Meag had her breakfast, coffee and was impatiently waiting for him.
“Where have you been?” Meag said.
“I did some barn chores then took my coffee on the porch.” Adam said in a superior tone.
“Oh I see, well I have been up before dawn, your orders, and no Adam. So next time that happens I will sleep in until later.”
“I wouldn’t do that Meag, Joe said wearily.
“If I don’t wake when I have to be at a certain early chore, I get my rump smacked.”
“Joseph?” Ben said hiding his grin under his napkin.
“Well if that happens I can tell you one of us will have a blackened eye Little Joe, and it won’t be me.” Meag said glancing at Adam.

Adam and Meag rode out to the branding pens. Slim and some of the other hands were there.
“Sit on that fence there and watch.” Adam said curtly.
“I will for awhile, but then I will join in.”Meag said under no uncertain terms.

“If you wish. But if you faint dead away, I will simply put you in that wagon over there.”

One by one the older calves were brought before the iron. It wasn’t the most pleasant of tasks, but it had to be done.
“Ok Meag the next calf you flip and stand back when the iron comes in.”
Jumping off her perch, Meag tried to flip the calf that weighed just about as she did..
“Hold on, Meag he is much too big.” Adam said impatiently.

“Shut up Cartwright. Meag took the animal and pulled him on top of her.
‘Ok what are you waiting for, get the brand.” Meag said puffing like a steam train. She was filthy and this animal fell wrongly on to her chest. She wasn’t about to complain.

Slim was too shocked to move. Adam branded the calf and pulled it off of her.

“You ok Meag, you don’t do that again, you got me?” Adam said feeling guilty that the big calf could have hurt her badly.
“Is that an order?” Meag said with a touch of anger breathing heavily.
“Yes by god it is, this has gone too far.” Adam’s anger raising.

“You picked him out for me, he is branded, so let’s move on to the next one.” Meag said still unable to catch air into her lungs.
Seeing she was truly done in, Adam reached for her arm.
“Go back to the ranch, we will talk about it there.” Adam said.

“Oh so now you are dismissing me like a child. I am not your child Adam. I have work to do, so do you, so let’s do it.”Meag said angrily.

“If you were my child you would be over my knee by now. If you don’t go back to the house that is just where you will be.” Adam said lowly in her ear.

“I will go but not before I tell you something. I don’t think you would want to consider me anything other than a woman Mr. C., you see if I was a child you couldn’t kiss me like you want now could you? Meag said silkily. He could feel her hand touch his arm and an electric current passed between them.
Then she kicked him as hard as she could in the shin making him hop around like a jack rabbit.

Again she left him breathless and uncomfortable. Slim snickered and went somewhere else, anywhere else but in Adams line of sight.

Meag rode back to the ranch. Her chest pain was unbearable by the time she made it back to her room after briefly saying hello to Ben and Hop Sing. “Meag, something wrong dear?”
“Yes, your son Adam, he is an impossible Yankee Granite Head?”

Lin Won Se had just completed Meag’s bath adding lavender and roses. Meag didn’t feel well, her chest hurt like the dickens, she was having trouble breathing. Lin Se, please help me take off this shirt, I am terribly bruised I am afraid I can’t reach over my head too well.
Seeing dark bruising across Meag’s chest, Lin Won Se became concerned.
“Missy have bad ribs, maybe be broken, get doctor to come..”.

“No I will be f-fine...she passed out.
At that moment Adam had come in the door and straight up the stairs. He was going to make things a little uncomfortable for one Meag Katlin. As soon as he could walk on that leg she sunk her boot into, Adam had mounted up and headed in a full steam of anger toward the house. She won’t ride for a few days because she won’t be able to sit? Adam told himself. Next time she toys with him he would not release her so easily, she makes me angry and crazed with lust at the same time...
“Adam what are....you doing?...Ben called out...Adam kept his eyes on the room upstairs taking the steps two at a time.
Two knocks on her door and no answer. Oh so we are playing more games he thought. Opening the door he found Meag laying face down on the floor with Lin Se trying to wake her.
“Pa?” Adam cried out. Lin Se get Hop Sing quick.” Adam said with panic in his voice. It was all his fault, that animal must of broke some ribs or worse.
Ben came upstairs quickly. “Adam what is it, what’s wrong with her?” Ben said.
“Pa send for a doctor please. Hoss was at the threshold. “Hoss ride for the doctor now, Meag is hurt badly.”
Hoss didn’t hesitate, he rode Chubb as quick as he dared to Paul Martin’s house.
“Let’s get her into her bed Adam.” Ben said.
Hop Sing and Lin Se took over before the doctor showed up.

“Adam, come on with me downstairs. Let Hop Sing and Lin Se examine her. Tell me what happened today.”Ben said taking Adam aside.
Adam told him about the branding pen, Adam was feeling so guilty.
“Son she knew this was the risk of it, she will be ok son. When you were going upstairs I thought you were going up there to ...
I was going to tan those smart britches of hers. I was very angry with her today. She was hurting and wouldn’t even admit it to me, I feel so bad Pa.”
Adam quit beating yourself up. You two are alike, Meag and you. I see the light around you two, do you see it too Adam? She is your match Adam.” Ben said squeezing his shoulder.

“I love her Pa, I love her and I might lose her tonight.” Adam said looking upstairs.

“That is not going to happen she needs to hear how you feel, give her that my son.”

Hop Sing came out with Lin Se. “How is she Hop Sing?” Ben asked.

“She resting quiet for now. Number one son, need not upset Miss anymore today?”
Hop Sing admonished then walked off chattering in Cantonese.

Doc Martin examined Meag and came to the same conclusion, she broken about three ribs. She would have to rest for a few weeks in bed. He gave her some powders to take for pain.
Adam couldn’t stay away any longer. Adam sat with her holding her hand. He winced as he felt a few blisters from fixing fences and raking stalls had left on her normally soft palms. He turned her wrist upward and kissed it gently.
“Adam?” Meag said with her eyes closed.
“It’s not Little Joe Meag, sorry to disappoint.” Adam said with a teasing smile.
“So am I, that boy sure can kiss.” Meag shot back.
Rolling his eyes Adam sighed deeply. “Meag, the Doc says you will be fine, you broke some ribs. Now listen to me, I don’t want you to talk, just rest Meag.” Adam said softly.
“Adam, I’ have to tell you...
“Shh gal, can’t you do anything I tell you? He whispered.
“No, I like you off balance, as Lin Se says...”
“Then you got your wish, I am off balance, head over heals in love with you Meag Katlin. When you get stronger, I will seal that with a kiss, a long passionate kiss you could write a book about.

The End
