Part II
The good Doctor Martin had finished his exam of Meag Katlin. It had been close to 4 weeks since she broke some ribs experiencing flipping calves for branding. Giving her a clean bill of health meant the world to her at this moment. For one thing it would mean getting out of the house and not being treated like an invalid any longer. Adam had been wonderful with his attentiveness. A real prince and a royal pain. Hop Sing and Lin Won Se took great care of her in every way. Even shooing away Adam once in awhile so she could rest easily.
“Well Doctor how am I?” Meag said hopefully.
“You are going to be sore for awhile yet, but I see no need for bed rest young lady. In fact some exercise and fresh sunshine will help you heal faster. Now remember no more wrestling of steer!” Doc Martin said tapping her nose.
“Oh thank you Doctor, I am so tired of being in this bed.” Meag said smiling from ear to ear.
“I will send in Adam, he is anxiously awaiting word about you.” Doc Martin
said winking at her.
Rolling her eyes, Meag nodded and waited for Adam to come in.
Adam strolled in and went to her side. “Well Meag by that smile I take it
you are healing nicely.”
“Yes, and Doc Martin gave me the go ahead for my next project Adam. So if you will let me get dressed...” Meag said not really looking at him.
“Your next project..and what is that?” Adam said with an arched eyebrow.
“The cattle drive of course. You said the drive starts soon and I am going.”Meag said hoping for no further ‘discussion’.
“You get dressed Meag, I will be right back.” Adam said going downstairs to have a few words with the good Doctor Martin.
Paul was sipping his coffee when Adam asked him. “Doc you told Meag she could go on the cattle drive?”
“No Adam she didn’t ask me about the cattle drive. I told her she was healing nicely, she didn’t require bed rest no longer and to get some exercise and some sunshine.” Paul said with half a smile.
“I see, excuse me Paul, Pa.” Adam went back upstairs to have words with
Meag Katlin.
“Stay for breakfast Paul?” Ben said looking upstairs shaking his head.
“Wouldn’t miss it Ben.” Paul said chuckling.
“Meag I need to speak to you, open this door.” Adam said with a clenched jaw.
“Just a minute darling, I am getting dressed. I am not decent.” Meag said
panicked.
Meag went to the window and saw the good doctor was still here. Damn he
must have told Adam I didn’t exactly ask about the cattle drive. She opened
the window wide and pulled the curtains to the side. She threw her hat down
there to make it look like she shimmied down the tree. Then she went under
the bed.
“Meag I am coming in, cover yourself if you are not decent.” Adam opened
the door.
Adam went in but no Meag. Seeing the window open he went over and looked
down. This was the room near the tree, he and his brother’s all used that
trick once in awhile. Her hat? She never wears a hat. She wouldn’t, that’s
a tricky climb. Slamming his hand across the window sill he cussed out Damnation
and went downstairs in a huff toward the barn. Joe and Hoss were coming
in for breakfast. “You two see Meag outside; did she come out to the barn?”
“No Adam, ain’t the doctor looking in on her?” Hoss said.
“He did, then when I went upstairs ...oh never mind.” Adam said stalking across the yard.
“Adam, isn’t that Meag waving at you from her window?” Joe said.
Adam sighed, Damnation!
“Adam what the devil is wrong with you.? Ben asked.
Adam stopped himself halfway up the stairs then turned. Going over to Paul. Adam had a grin on his face.“Hey Doc, can I ask you a question....”
Meag was upstairs under the bed trying not to laugh. Adam is running around like a chicken with his head cut off. She heard him coming upstairs. He went over to the bed, dropped down to the floor like a flash, he caught her wrist.
“Hey Adam, breakfast ready yet?” Meag said seeing a not too familiar gleam
in his eye.
Laying on the floor with her wrist in a vice grip?he was almost about to
lose it.
“Almost, but we have time enough for you and I to have a little talk. Come
out of there please.”
Meag scooted out and stood up. “Adam what did you think, I flew out that window?” Meag said laughing. Boy you should see your ...face...Adam..” Meag sure didn’t like the look he was giving her.
“Darling please hold this, handing her a pillow out in front of her. She
held the pillow in front of her.
“So you like to fly? Well you are going to fly right over my knee Meag Katlin.
He took her by the arm sat on her bed and put her directly over his knee.
He held her there. “Comfortable?”
“ADAM!” Meag couldn’t move, the pillow she held onto was protecting her ribs but also her hands were under it.
“Adam, Adam my injury, remember!” Meag said pleading.
“I am not going to spank your ribs, don’t worry.” Adam said with a sarcastic grin.
“Adam, Doc Martin, he wouldn’t agree with this I am sure. Go ASK HIM!”
“I DID ask him, just before I came up here. SMACK.. the first swat took her very breath away...
“ADAM YOU PUT ME DOWN.” She yelled.
“I also asked him if YOU ASKED HIM ABOUT THE CATTLE DRIVE”....SMACK...
“ADAM STOP”....the second swat was just as bad..
“Don’t you ever lie to me Meag Katlin especially about things like that. SMACK...he put her upward again.
“Breakfast is ready darling, be down in a few minutes, don’t keep everyone
waiting.”
She was spitting mad and her tail was on fire.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Meag did come down for breakfast, she was still mad but her manners were
impeccable. Adam watched her cautiously. If he could convince himself she
wouldn’t get even he could actually enjoy his meal.
Meag took up the conversation. Hoss and Joe just watched, breakfast got
real interesting.
“Doctor, about the cattle drive. If I wrap my ribs as I have been doing and rest when I can, if would not be unfeasible for me to go next week would it?” Meag said while everyone was still at the table.
Put on the spot Doc Martin spoke the truth. “No it would not be unfeasible.”
Adam pointed his fork at Meag.
“And as Doc Martin does not have first hand experience of what a cattle
drive entails, no disrespect Paul. The fact is you are talking about hours
in a saddle, dust and dirt with rough and grizzled men who would not put
up with your antics Meag Katlin. Not to mention sleeping on the ground,
weather is usually bad, dangerous conditions, snakes and last year we had
an Indian problem. It is a hard drive not like the few hours experience
you had catching strays. Everyone pulls their weight, and frankly you would
be a drag on the best of days.” Adam said also speaking the truth.
“OH MY snakes, Indians, thunder and lightening, sure you don’t want to add
the boogie man while your at it! Meag said hotly
Hoss and Joe chuckled but did not dare look at big brother, they knew better.
“I will leave it up to the Boss, ( nodding to Ben) and so should you.” She stood to excused herself.
“Sit down Meag.” Ben said sternly.
Meag complied looking downward.
“As your ‘Boss’, you and I had an agreement. You could do your research for this book, as long as it wasn’t dangerous to yourself. We also agreed that I would make that call. Am I correct young lady?” Ben said.
“Yes sir, you are correct.” So far, Meag thought to herself.
“I have yet to decide ‘IF’ you are going on this drive. I will think on this and give you both an answer later. For now I do want any more arguments or antics. This is a busy week and you ALL have chores to do.” Ben said brooking no other comments
“Ben you should have been an attorney.” Paul said with a chuckle.
“More like a ringmaster in this circus.” Ben said.
“Ben it has been a most interesting breakfast, I have to go check on George Jorgenson, he is recovering from a fall from his roof. Nice to see you doing so well Miss Katlin.”
“Thank you Doctor. The next time Adam asks advice about me, please let
me know in advance.”
She said with a smirk.
“I will do just that.” Paul Martin said leaving out the door.
“Meag, Mrs. Browne asked if you would like to join the ladies today for the Virginia City Ladies Club tea. I told her I would ask you if the Doc here gave you good news.” Ben said.
“Oh yes that would be nice, I have some things I need to pick up in town
anyway.” Meag said.
She excused herself to go change into a more appropriate attire for a ladies
tea gathering.
“Good, good I have a Cattleman Association meeting to attend, we can ride in together and maybe meet for lunch.”
“Pa can I go to town too, I haven’t seen my friends for ...”Joe said hopefully.
“No young man, you have your chores to do. You been slacking off, don’t
think I have not noticed. Anymore missed chores you and I will have a very
necessary discussion. Am I clear Joseph?” Ben said.
“Yes Pa.” Little Joe said disappointed he wouldn’t be able to go with Meag
and Pa today.
“Adam, I think you should finish breaking that string we contracted for
the army. We don’t have much time left before that contract becomes due.”
Ben said looking over his list.
“I will get it done Pa.” Adam said.
“Hoss, you have that corral finished please.” Ben said looking at his middle son.
“Yes sir, almost done Pa.”
“Good, we should be home before supper. When Meag is ready, we will be taking the buckboard.” Ben went outside to hitch up the team.
Adam wanted to see Meag before his day of work was to start. She came downstairs in a very fetching dress. “Meag come here, please.” Adam said admiring her.
“Yes Adam.” She said as sweetly as she could. She didn’t relish a long ride to town with a sore backside, in due time Adam, in due time.
“You are still angry with me?” Adam said taking her small hand in his.
“A hug would help.” Meag said walking into his arms.
They stood there for a moment holding each other. “Adam do you need anything?”
“Need anything? I can think of one thing. He lifted her chin lowering his
mouth to hers.
Capturing her mouth his kiss became more intense. She melted into him pushing
herself as close as she could. Feeling his reaction she had to break if
off or completely surrender to it.
“A-Adam your father is waiting.”
“Let him get his own girl.” Adam said not willing to let her go yet.
Giggling she pushed away. “Adam, tonight, we can go watch the sunset alright?”
“I would rather wake with the sunrise with you beside me.” He whispered.
“We haven’t had that talk yet.” Meag said blushing from head to toe.
“You have the most delightful way of blushing my girl.”
“And you have the most irritating way of making that happen without warning.”
She quickly kissed him again. “And yes I am still angry with you.” She said
walking down the stairs.
He watched her walk away from him toward the door. Indulging in a last look
to her nicely rounded backside which she rewarded him with slight wiggle.
He smirked as she turned her head and winked at him, then she was out the
door.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
The ride into town, Meag and Ben talked non stop. She wanted to know so
much about him and his Elizabeth, Inger and Marie. Ben opened up with romantic
stories he reflected with a slight gleam in his eyes. Meag saw the love
of each woman nestled deep in his heart. That is where they exist in his
heart and thrive there safe and sound. She marveled that this man could
suffer so much but took what life has given him, what god has tested him
with and with hard work, created this land to be even more beautiful.
“Adam has not only his mother’s love of books and learning he has her wit.”
“Oh he can be clever that one, also the most stubborn.”
“He must get that from his mother too.” Ben said chuckling.
“I think not, but maybe stubborn women are just the ticket for you Mr. Cartwright.” Meag said.
“Well I have been blessed that way all my life. Now my mother she was one stubborn woman.”
“I wouldn’t of guessed. Meag said chuckling. After the meeting today Ben, could you go with me to the gun smith. I want to pick out a colt and a hunting rifle.”
“Sure, sure. Who are the guns for?” Ben said curiously.
“Me, sir.” Meag said flatly.
“YOU? Meag why would you need...”
“Just in case I go on the cattle drive. I can shoot, my father taught me a long time ago. I hunt once a year when I can get away. But don’t let that sway your decision.” Meag said coyly.
“You want an answer right now, I will give you one. But you wouldn’t like it. So when I say I will give you an answer later, I mean it young lady.” Ben said taking his finger and shaking it at her.
“Yes sir. Stubborn”. Meag said barely above a whisper.
“What was that?” Ben said giving her a stern look.
“I said I am a little sunburned. Uh I will meet you after the meeting, sir.” Meag said looking contrite and adorable at the same time.
“My son has his hands full doesn’t he?” Ben said with a smirk.
“I think he can handle it.” Meag said quickly kissing him.
Ben went to his Cattlemen Association Meeting in high spirits. Yes sir, Adam has his hands full with that one.”
Meag walked into the International. She was a little relieved to see her new friend Beth Anderson. The meeting went on highlighting on fund raising and new projects. The ladies then enjoyed tea and cake, visiting with each other.
“What is your next project with the ranch Meag?” Beth asked.
“Well I am hoping to go on the cattle drive. I am waiting for the ‘Boss’ to decide on that issue.”
“Cattle drive you say?” Mrs. Ross said eavesdropping as usual.
“Yes ma’am.” Meag said.
“That would be most improper Miss Katlin, those men...”
“Those men would be hired by my good friend Mr. Cartwright. He is also reluctant but knows how important this would be to my research on the book. So I will respect his wishes.”
“The ladies had a lot of fat to chew now” Beth said with a smile.
“Yes, I guess they do. What else is new.” Meag answered.
The meeting adjourned, Meag and Beth parted ways. Meag knew Ben would be
along shortly, she waited outside the hotel.
She was startled by a most disagreeable smell omitting from a most grimy
and large man covered in dirt and grease.
“Hello der lil Miss” said this smelly miner staggering up to her.
“Sir please, I am waiting for someone.” Meag said trying to stay ‘down wind from this vile smelling individual.
“I am here lil lady, I am just the man you been wait’n fer, I can show you a good time.” The miner came closer trying to grab her arm.
Meag stepped back and bumped into another man, Ben Cartwright.
She stepped behind him.
“Butch you move on, the lady is with me.” Ben said looking all of his full height.
“Cartwright, you a might ol for his filly..”
“This filly is my son’s lady Butch, you move on and leave her alone.” Ben said in a dark tone.
“Yessa Mr. Cartwright, she will make that boy of yours a passel of babies, yessiree.”
Ben heard Meag snicker behind him.
“Let’s go to the gun smith.” Ben said reluctantly.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Ben and Meag returned. Adam was helping her down from the buckboard. How
was your ride from town?” Adam said with a superior looking smirk. “It was
a little uncomfortable, a lot you care. Meag said giving him a pinch on
the arm. Ignoring her for now, Adam’s eyes went to the new rifle.
You bought a new rifle Pa?” Adam said admiring the stock.
“No son.” Ben said not about to volunteer information. He continued to busily unload the wagon.
“Did I ruin a surprise, a present for someone?”Adam said admiring the expensive gun.
“Nope.” Meag said grabbing more packages.
“Well who is it for?” Adam said looking confused.
“It’s mine silly, I bought it.” Meag said smiling.
“Meag, we need to talk about this.” Adam said not happy with the very thought of Meag armed.
“Adam we will talk about this and other things. How was your day sweetie?” Meag gave him an innocent look.
Rolling his eyes, he helped unload some other things in the wagon. “Hand me that box will you Adam.” Meag said pointing to a box that had the gun smith’s brand on it.
“What is that?” Joe said coming up from the house.
“My new best friend, a colt revolver, and it is a beaut.” Meag said not looking at Adam’s face.
“And if I catch you touching that gun young man, you will not be a very happy fellow. Do you understand Joseph?” Ben said pointing a finger at his son.
“Yes Pa.” Joe said disappointed.
“Pa, Meag and I are going to take a walk. We will be back shortly.”. Adam
took Meag by the hand heading toward a pond to have it out about this gun
business. Ben shook his head. Yes, he has his hands full with that one.
Sitting on a rock near the water, Adam motioned for her to sit next to him.
“Now, what is with this rifle?” Adam said not looking at her.
“I also bought a colt revolver, holster and of course ammo.” Meag said.
“Of course, and why did you do that?”Adam said sarcastically.
“Because I will feel naked and vulnerable without them when I go on that cattle drive.”Meag said straightening out her skirt.
“Meag, Pa didn’t make up his mind yet you know that.” Adam said putting an arm around her shoulder. “I think I would like to see you naked and vulnerable, but without a gun.”Adam said with a dimpled grin.
She turned into a red apple. “Adam we haven’t had that talk yet.” She wanted to make him blush but that would be difficult , the insufferable man.
Two can play at his game she thought.
Coyly Meag stood up and stood in front of him. Meag was determined to make
him just as uncomfortable as possible.
“I think strapping on a gun and holster and being naked might be quite a
picture, yes sir I want you to think about that a moment. Now if
you were naked, now that would be a stroke of luck. She said seductively.
“Meag” Adam said looking at her with a raised eyebrow. She put an image in his head and she was playing with it.
“Yessiree, it would be nice to stroke your naked chest with my fingers..” Standing a little farther away.
“Meag stop that.” Adam said with a slight crack in his voice. She slowly moved a small distance further from him.
“I do love the way you stroke your guitar. Do you do it like this. She
stroked a invisible instrument bringing her hands from between her well
formed breasts downward in a slow stroking motion.
Just teasing his mind but it was his body that was reacting making him very
uncomfortable.
“Adam you look like you are going to have a “Stroke” Meag burst out laughing
at the look on his face. She had no choice but to run.
Catching her by her waist he tickled her until she begged for mercy.
Walking some more Adam put his arm around her shoulders.
“How did you get Pa to let you buy a gun?”
“Let me? He suggested it after I was molested on the street by some drunk miner..”
“WHAT, who?”
“Some man your Pa knew as ‘Butch’ he grabbed my arm and wanted me to go with him. Lucky for me your father walked up and told him to leave me alone.” Meag said not liking the look Adam had on his face. “Adam, it is alright, he didn’t hurt me.” Meag said.
“Meag wearing a gun will bring attention to you not discourage it. Some men would take it as a challenge.”
“I am not going to wear it down main street, I will only carry it on the
trail. I don’t want to argue Adam.
Here we are, alone, a nice breeze, trees swaying, birds singing. Don’t you
hear them Adam?
“The birds?” Adam said looking at her wondering what she was talking about.
“Yes the birds are saying ‘hey Adam kiss her, she’s so tweet’. See that jack rabbit over there, he is saying “Adam better ‘hop to it.” Meag looked at Adam batting her eyes.
Adam was trying to stay serious.
He couldn’t hold it in, he burst out laughing out loud then grabbed her by the waist.
“Hop to it? Oh my goodness Meag, you make me laugh. Hugging her closely.. “I love you Meag Katlin.”
Meag kissed him tenderly holding him close. “I love you with all my heart.
You need to smile more Dimples.”
.))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Later that night Ben was doing some paperwork for the cattle drive. He
had hired some extra hands. Since Hop Sing would be going this year, provisions
were being tallied. At least the food would be good, Meag thought to herself.
.Meag looked at Ben to see if he was going to announce his decision about
her going on the cattle drive.
“Ben you need your pipe?” Meag said sweetly.
“No thank you dear.” Ben said not looking up but seeing right through her.
“How about a glass of brandy?” Even sweeter was she.
Hoss snickered as Meag batted her big green eyes at him.
“There is still some pie Ben.” Meag said.
“Maybe you should have some to keep that mouth of yours busy”. Ben said with a deep sigh.
“I was only trying to see if you need anything before you make any important
decisions tonight.”
Meag said pretending to pout.
All three Cartwright sons chuckled at the look she gave him.
“Meag when I make my decision I will tell you.” Ben said not looking up from his paperwork.
‘Stubborn’ Meag whispered to into her tea cup.
“What was that?” Ben said now looking up over the tops of his eyes. A bad sign indeed.
“I said I feel sunburned.” Meag said sweet as pie.
Adam just cleared his throat. Meag shot him a hard glance.
Joe giggled as she shifted uncomfortably.
“Impatient Brat”. Ben said in a whisper.
Adam, Hoss and Joe were chuckling.
“Did you say something Pa?” Adam said suppressing a chuckle.
“Yes, I said I need a new hat.”Ben said not looking up.
“Oh I thought you said ‘Impatient Brat’. That I would understand! Adam said looking over at Meag.
Hoss and Joe laughed out loud. Meag came over to Ben and kissed him on his cheek. “Yes I guess I am.”
An hour later Ben put down his paper work and asked that everyone sit around the table. He wanted to talk.
“I decided young lady. Now, this drive to San Francisco will not be easy Meag.
“I get to go?” Meag said and was rewarded by a small kick under the table
by Adam.
“Sorry sir, didn’t mean to interrupt.’ Meag said giving Adam a scowl.
“There will rules you will abide by young lady. You stray from those rules and I will send you packing. Understood?”
“Yes understood Mr. Cartwright.” Meag said contritely.
“When on the trail you will ride with Hoss. Adam and I are on point positions and will be some distance from you in the first few days. At night, I am setting up a tent for you. That is where you will eat, sleep and dress at all times when not riding. This is not negotiable. There are men who are going along that I frankly don’t know too much about. I will not tempt trouble by having you mingle among them when we stop for a rest or for the night. You will wear your revolver and carry a rifle on your horse. One of biggest dangers when on a drive is a stampede. It is important that you learn when and only when you could fire that weapon. Hop Sing will be coming along. If he needs you to help him you will do so without argument and that is the only time you will be allowed away from Hoss or your tent. Since we will be ending up in San Francisco, we will also take some days there. Bring only what is necessary.
Adam looked at her giving her a nod to say something.
“Thank you Mr. Cartwright. I will not let you down. When exactly are we leaving?” Meag said.
“We are leaving in two days. Tomorrow you will have to get some overalls or long pants and shirts. Hop Sing can make other suggestions. And when did you go back to calling me Mr. Cartwright?”
“Since you became my trail boss, Mr. Cartwright.” Meag said smiling.
“On the trail that is a good idea. Here, please call me Ben.” Ben said tapping her nose.
“Would you really send me packing, Ben.” Meag said with her not so innocent, innocent puppy-dog face.
“Yes, I would not hesitate and if you test my wrath young woman, I may just add a sore backside to your woes. Now all of you get to bed.” Ben said slapping the table.
Everyone went up to their rooms. The next few days would be busy with preparations and last minute details.
At breakfast the next morning Joe was sulking as he always did before any
trail drive. He wanted to go, but at 13 years old, Ben would not allow it.
He had enough on his plate with Meag coming along.
“Little buddy, you and Mitch will have a good time while we are gone.” Hoss
said. He hated to see Joe act up.
“Not fair Hoss. I can ride just as well as anyone. I could help Meag, it’s
her first time.”
Meag came downstairs that morning carrying a small bundle wrapped in brown paper and twine.
“This is for you Joe.” She handed him a small manuscript. I am sending
it to my editor to see if he will print it. I never wrote a book like this
one but you inspired me, the way you ride that horse of yours. Meag wrote
him a story special just for him. He was the hero with his magic pinto that
could fly. Joe beamed and showed everyone his book.
“Meag, that is fantastic. I think you have a flare for children books.”
Adam said, he was very proud of her.
“Thank you. I will let my editor see what he thinks. I also sent him an
excerpt of my new book, he seemed excited about it. I got a telegram from
him yesterday.” Meag said happily.
Hop Sing asked Meag and Lin Se if they would pick some ripe raspberries
by the creek this morning. He wanted to make some pies for Mrs. Devlin who
would be taking care of Joe.
They happily agreed.
Meag enjoyed Lin Se’s company. She could converse with her in Lin Se’s native
tongue having learned the language as a child traveling with her father.
Much to Adam’s dismay. Meag put on her holster and revolver before they
left. She wanted to be safe and maybe get a little target practice in.
As the two women picked the berries to fill the basket to the top, a rattler
was poised and angry just two feet from Lin Se. Terrified she screamed.
The rattler was about to spring, Meag shot from the hip putting a big hole
where the snake head used to be. Lin Se dropped to her knees.
“You alright Lin Se?” Meag said thinking she may be bitten after all.
“Yes, yes just scared. How you learn to shoot like that?”
“My aunt taught me, she was in a wild west show, very interesting woman.
I will tell you about it.
“ But can we not tell Adam about the snake Lin Se?” Meag said.
“If that what you wish. Not understand.” Lin Se said still shaking.
“He hates that I wear a gun at all, he would just use this as an excuse to follow me even to the outhouse if he had his way.” Meag said shaking her head.
Hoss came riding up.
“You ladies alright? I thought I heard a gunshot.”
Just target practicing Hoss.
“Meag ders a passel of ladies at the house, Pa said to fetch ya.”
“Oh my gosh, ok Hoss we will be right there.”
“Here you ride Chubb back to the house I will walk Lin Se back.”
“Oh thank you Hoss.” Meag climbed on Chubb with Hoss’ help waving goodbye.
“She is a firecracker that girl.”
“Yes Mr. Adam lucky man.” Lin Se said with affection.
The ladies all arrived expecting to be met by Meag and Ben. Ben was there
but Meag was not to be found. Hop Sing told Ben where Meag was.
Mrs. Browne, Mrs. Pinrod and her daughter Penelope, Mrs. Ross, Donna Dunger
and Marcy Jones. Donna and Marcy.
“Meag will be right here, she had wanted to pick berries for Hop Sing this
morning. Hoss went to bring her home.
“My she certainly made herself at home here these last few months.” Donna Dunger said with venom in her voice. Ben knew her as the banker’s daughter. She had her sights on Adam for some time, Adam found her to be too much a brat to bother with.
“Ben we come out here as your friend, it is very shameful you would bring this young woman on the cattle drive. That would not be proper and you know it. She is really a stranger here in these parts. Maybe she is after your money. As your friend I feel I must emphasize....” Mrs. Ross spouted.
“I appreciate your concern ladies, I had no idea my cattle drives, or my
ranch decisions were such fodder for debate.
Mrs. Ross, she is going on the cattle drive. She and I have an agreement,
the rules have been laid down for her. She will be separated from the men
at rest times. I have commissioned a tent she is to stay in at rest times.
Do you know me as a wretch, a man who would take advantage of some young
girl?” Ben said directly looking at each woman there.
“No of course not Ben.” Mrs. Browne said feeling suddenly foolish.
“I consider this young woman as a dear friend. Her work is very important
to her.
I assure you that I would not put that young lady in any position to compromise
her good reputation. She is working on a book. Our agreement is based on
that only. She is above reproach.” Ben said getting a little more than angry.
Hop Sing brought out tea and cookies. “Miss Katlin most honored guest.”
“Yes she is Hop Sing.” Ben said soothing his friend’s unseen ruffled feathers.
Meag heard most of what was said. Ben saw the hurt look on her face, but Meag quickly put on a cheerful one.
“Ladies, what a pleasant surprise. I will go wash and be right with you.”
Meag said.
Seeing she may have overheard the earlier comment, Ben went to her. “You
alright Meag?”
“Fine Ben, maybe I have overstayed my welcome here. It may be time for me
to leave...”
“And break my heart, Adam’s heart. You talk like that young lady and I
will finish what
Adam started yesterday morning with you over ‘my knee. Meag I will entertain
your ladies until you can wash and change, please hurry.” He said winking
at her.
Giving him a quick kiss on the cheek she went up the back stairs.
Hop Sing already had the water ready and a dress laid out on her bed. “Thank
you Hop Sing, you are my life saver.” Meag quickly changed. Lin Se returned
and quickly went upstairs to help her finish.
Meag made her entrance in grand style. She tripped on her dress. Laughing
at herself seemed to be the norm these days. ‘Thank you Ben for greeting
these fine ladies. I know you have things to do.” Meag said giving him a
nod that all was well. He left reluctantly.
“I apologize I was not here earlier. Berries were ripe and Hop Sing requested
a whole basket full.”
.
“I see, you do as the servants say?” Marcy said with a smirk.
“Hop Sing and Lin Se are very much apart of this family. They are considered as such. He takes excellent care of us, it is only fitting I help when I can.” Meag said straightly.
“Well, I guess you consider yourself apart of the family too?” Donna said sarcastically.
“I am fortunate to have them as friends, as all of you are.” Meag said
fending off Miss Dunger.
And if I had to pick a family to be welcomed in, this would it. They are
all wonderful.
Since you are here, why don’t we talk about some fund raising ideas for
the orphanage project?”
Meag suggested changing the subject off of her to more important things.
The gathering turned into a meeting lasting a few hours. But Marcy and Donna
were relentless with their snooty remarks, sniping at Meag every turn.
Finally enough was enough. “Miss Dunger is there something I did to offend you? I can’t ignore the hostility which seems to be counterproductive here.” Meag said.
“Here, Here” Mrs. Browne said agreeing with Miss Katlin. “Donna you have been disagreeable all day long and frankly, for no good reason except for one I can think of my dear.”
“Oh and what would that be?” Donna said standing up.
“For the reason Miss Katlin has Adam’s heart these days and no other reason. I suggest you let it go dear so we can get this done.” Mrs. Browne said.
“Well I never..” Donna Dunger said sitting down red faced.
Meag moved the meeting along, Donna and Marcy stayed, but were considerably
more quiet. Mrs. Browne winked at Meag.
As the ladies left in their carriage, Meag sighed a huge sigh and asked
Hop Sing for a brandy
.
Hop Sing chuckled. “Miss deserve one good belt. Don’t tell Misler Cartwright.”

“Morning Pa, Meag up yet? Adam asked.
“Haven’t seen her. She was a bit tired yesterday son. Let her sleep a little longer. I wanted to speak to you son. Let’s take a walk to the barn.”
Those words will always send a prickle to his backside no matter how old he gets. Adam thought to himself.
“Adam, you and Meag. Well son I was wondering...”
“No Pa I haven’t asked her.” Adam said turning his back.
“You love her, I know that you do. We all do. What is it son?” Ben put his arm on his son.
“I don’t really know. Pa, have you ever met a woman who made you want to
throttle her and in the same moment make her yours all in the same moment?”
“Yes, I have Adam; your mother. She had such spirit and yet she turned my
most terrible anger into a desire I could not even fathom. If Meag has that
same quality, you would be a fool to turn her away.’
“If something happened to her Pa, or how would I really know she would be
happy here. I think I need more time.” Adam said turning away slightly.
Taking a deep breath Ben knew he had to reach him. His son has the inability to allow happiness to flow inward. He protects his stubborn heart with ferocity of a five star general.
“It was time for her to leave is that it? She is getting too close to your heart. I have seen you happy these last months and it scares you to death.” Ben said looking into Adams eyes.
“If Meag were to leave today, you could live with that? Because she will
be asked to leave Adam. Better to end it if you only plan to hurt her by
denying her your heart, your name.”
“Pa, I do love her.”
“Yes son I know. She is a good match for you son, one who counteracts you
so well that she brings out the best in you. She makes you complete Adam.”
Adam looked at his father and met his eyes. His father has never made false
statements to him. He would send her away. He has never interfered with
his love life before. But this situation did feel different. It was almost
a family decision since she was....my god she is, she is part of the family.
Ben held his son’s arm.
“Adam I think you should know something. The ladies in town gave her a pretty
hard time of it yesterday. She didn’t say so, but the hurt was there. Right
now she is doubting herself.
Adam, have I not taught you anything? Will you deny her, deny yourself because
of what might be? That girl loves you with a full heart. One moment of that
love is worth one billion maybe’s and would-ifs Adam.”
Adam lowered his head. He pictured two different lives.
Without her it would black and bleak, he would have a lifetime of searching.
Searching for the very treasure he had in that very house..
With her, he would have laughter, love and a partner in life who will not
only fill him with all he desired but complete him. His heart lifted as
if a curtain had opened.
“I don’t want her to leave Pa. I want her to stay..and be my wife. I want us to have children, your grandchildren. Oh what a fool I have been Pa..I am going to wake her and ask her before she can get one wise crack out of that beautiful lucius mouth of hers...Pa, thank you.”
“Now get that stubborn tail of yours upstairs and give this woman your
heart.!” Ben said slapping his son on the shoulder.
“Yes sir Pa, yes sir.!
Ben smiled, stubborn. My grandchildren will be twice as stubborn and what wits they will have. Yes the Cartwright stubborn streak will go on with a twist of the Katlin wit. Ben chuckled to himself. ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Adam slipped into Meag’s room. Looking down at her as she slept he had
to suppress a chuckle.
Cuddled deep in quilts with just her head peeking through with her hair
all askew, her mouth slightly open, not the most romantic timing Cartwright.
But he could not wait, not one more second.
Softly kneeling beside her, he kissed her gently on the cheek. She slightly
rolled on her back. Feeling a little more amorous, Adam leaned over her
cupping her chin taking her mouth with his.
“Is it morning already Joseph?”
‘Joseph!’Adam sat straight up. “Oh good morning Adam.”Meag said putting the covers over her head.
“Meag Katlin. You have the most”...he calmed down then went into a fit of laughter.
Taking the covers down over her buried face, “Good morning. May I have a word my lady?”
“Coffee, I need coffee.” Meag said diving again in the bliss of warmth of the quilt.
“Later. Sit up, there is something important I want to talk to you about.”
“It better be important, after all you are compromising me by being in my
room and I am completely naked.”
Adam turned scarlet.
“Hey I did it, I did it, you are as red as an app...I am sorry Adam. Please go on.” Meag said sensing he is about to lose it.
“Standing Adam put his hands on his hips and walked to the window. Taking deep breaths Adam was trying desperately not to imagine what was under that quilt and concentrated on his words.
“Please do not interrupt until I am finished.” Adam said calm now.
“Yes Adam, please go on I will not interrupt.” Meag said fearing what he was about to say.
“We have become very close, you and my family, are very close. I think you know that I have feelings for you. Tomorrow you will be on ....wait this is not coming out right.” Adam said frustrated.
“Close, you and I have exchanged spit for gods sake, I would say that is
close wouldn’t you!”
Meag said catching her mouth with her hands. I am sorry, I promise not to
interrupt again go on Adam.”
Now he was angry. Not only with her but with himself, losing the one thing he valued other than that impossible woman, he lost his own eloquent self control.
Taking her shoulders and sitting her up, he pointed a finger like a revolver
at her.
“The hell with it! Meag Katlin I want to marry you, I love you. Will you
do me the honor of being my wife? “Adam yelled it out. He was mortified.
He just yelled out a proposal of marriage.
Meag’s eyes filled with tears. He loves me and wants me to be his wife,
isn’t he the most romantic man.
“Lock the door and I will give you an answer you may never forget.” Meag
said reaching for him with both arms.
Hoss and Joe looked up from downstairs, ‘Why is he yelling at her?” Joe said shrugging his shoulders.
“Beats me little brother.”Hoss said. If he does that on the cattle drive he will cause a stampede.”
