AUTHOR, AUTHOR PART III
“Adam lots of people have their honeymoons in San Francisco, ours will just be include with the Cattle Drive. Don’t be so traditional.” Meag said seeing the look on Adams face.
“Traditional? Oh well, let’s not be traditional at all. We got engaged this morning, by dinner we will be married by tomorrow we will leave on a cattle drive so my wife can finish her book. I don’t think I am being traditional at all. What are you wearing at your wedding, a pair of chaps and boots?” Adam said flustered.
“I thought I would save those chaps for my trousseau.” Meag said with hands on hips.
Adam’s face cracked into a most mischievous grin. “Without benefit of under drawers, now that I could live with.” He whispered grabbing her for another kiss.
Slapping his arm, Meag was loss for words blushing brightly.
“Well, good thing Pa thought of the tent. I can...” Adam started to say.
“Oh I don’t know Adam. The thought of those men all knowing we are...alone in the tent.. maybe having relations...I don’t know.” Meag said shaking her head.
“There will be no maybe about it and I don’t care what they think. You will be my wife and we will be doing what comes natural between husbands and wives.” Adam said warming at the thought.
“We have tonight at least to uh oh you did it again. I am red as an apple aren’t I!! ”Meag turned away.
“Yes you are, and I cannot wait to have you in my arms tonight and every night.” Adam said holding on tight.
“Insufferable man. What am I going to do with you? You have many things to do, so scat and let me do what I need to ...do.” He took her mouth with his once again. Then quickly pulled away leaving her half dangling between heaven and earth.
Adam smiled as her eyes were still somewhat closed.
“Yep got to a lot to do. You try to relax. The cake is being baked, the
preacher will be here around 3:00 o’clock, Joe and Hoss are out inviting
people to the house for our small ‘intimate wedding’ and a telegram is being
sent to your aunts in Kansas. Oh yes, your friend Beth will be here as soon
as she can.
Anything else you need my princess?”
“Yes princess needs a belt of whiskey.” Meag said with a roll of her eyes.
“Don’t worry, I will get you properly drunk on champagne then take you to bed.” Adam said with a smirk as he left the room.
“Insufferable man.” Meag said with a giggle.
The whole house was in a whirl wind. Cooking, cleaning, decorating and Meag was in a dilemma. She did not have anything near passable for a wedding dress. Beth came over with three different dresses, all were much too large, much too ugly and much too much. Meag was shaking with nerves.
Ben went by her room hearing Meag was close to tears. “ I am not going to marry him and everyone can just go home. We can wait until San Francisco. I can’t get married in this, I would rather wear overalls” Meag said stifling a sob..
Ben went to the attic and found what he was looking for. He carried a box
to Meag’s bedroom.
“Beth, Meag close the door please.” Ben said softly.
Beth closed the door. “Now darling I can’t have my daughter- in- law in
such a state. Here, see if this will work. ”Ben said with a twinkle in his
eyes.
Meag opened the box and slowly removed a few layers of tissue paper. It was a most beautiful wedding dress, with antique lace and a detail of hand sewn pearls and silk buttons. “Oh Ben, where did you find such a treasure?” Beth said.
“It was Adam’s mother’s I kept it all these years hoping to give it to my daughter, if I ever had one. So here daughter, I think it will be wonderful on you. I hope you can forgive its condition. I tried to keep it as pristine as I could. This dress was also Adam’s grandmothers. So take care of it my love, maybe pass it to your daughter, my granddaughter.” Ben said touching the dress in remembrance of his dear Elizabeth descending the stairs to become his wife only 24 years ago.
“Oh Ben I don’t know what to say. Thank you. I know Adam will be surprised. I am actually feeling like a bride at this very moment.” She kissed Ben and hugged him.
“Let Adam be surprised, he doesn’t have to know everything.” Ben said smiling.
Adam constantly looked at the clock in the grand room. Soon it would be
time. He was nervous and elated at the same time. Meag was a mess. He delighted
having her off balance for once.
His father joined him downstairs.
“Well son, how are you doing?” Ben asked with a smile from ear to ear. Seeing
Adam so happy made everything they had been through since his baby hood
worth every second of it.
“I am doing fine Pa. Meag is a wreck. And frankly I like her this way for once.
“Son, I wanted to talk to you about where you two will spend your first
night. Now Mr. And Mrs. Anderson offered to let you stay at their home,
they could stay here. We all will be leaving early tomorrow on the cattle
drive, have you decided?”
“Pa, thank the Anderson’s for me. We just hadn’t had the time to make any plans. I will ask her if she would like to stay at the Anderson’s or at the International.”
“If there is anything you need or I can do to make this anymore special please let me know.” Ben said hugging his son.
“Thank you Pa, I know that I would just have to ask. I feel bad her aunts
cannot be here, but Kansas is some distance away. I sent a telegram and
inviting them out here anytime they feel they could come. I also sent a
letter off to Grandfather Stoddard.
It is a pity she don’t have her maiden aunts or a mother to help her through
her nerves. You know Pa, you are the closest thing to a mother she has”...Adam
said chuckling at the thought.
“Yes I know it. But I would not have it any other way. I love her as my own.” Ben said with shining eyes. I best go see if my girl wants to have a talk.” Ben said.
Beth and Meag were talking about men in general, when a knock come to the door. It was Ben who asked that Beth excuse them for a moment so they could have speak to Meag. Beth hugged Meag and went downstairs to help Hop Sing and Lin Se.
“Meag, I am at your disposal my dear. You need anything at all just ask
me.”
She shyly dipped her head, blushing again.
“I do need something Ben, your ear. Is it normal to be so scared?” Meag said biting her lip.
“What are you afraid of?” Ben asked gently.
“Not being able to please Adam, to fail him ...tonight when we are alone.” Meag said blushing deeply.
Ben looked at her for a moment, she was shaking with nerves.
“My dearest. He held her in a hug. When I was married for the first time,
Adam’s mother Elizabeth was younger than you. She too had a bad case of
nerves. We were married at her father’s home. It was a sweet small ceremony
which I will always treasure in my heart. But when we were finally alone
the love we had for each other led the way my darling. As it will with you
and Adam. Once you are in each other’s arms your nerves will fade. My son
is a gentle caring man. I know he will be an excellent husband in all aspects.
My boys were brought up to be respectful to women. If that young man gets
on your nerves, you let me know.” Ben said with a twinkle in his eye..
“You know my Elizabeth had the most charming wit and spirit. I see a lot
of that in you. Cherish each other Meag. Love will take care of the rest.
Now I am going to send in Lin Se. She has been waiting to take special care
of you and get you ready.”
“Thank you Pa, you don’t mind if I call you that do you?”Meag said.
“I certainly do not. God bless Meag.” Ben said leaving her.
Joe and Hoss returned to the house. “Pa, we’re back. We have a surprise for Adam and Meag. But we need your permission first.” Hoss said excited. Hoss and Joe took their father aside and explained their plan. “I think that is a wonderful gift boys. Now you two keep it a secret until the time is right.” Ben said happily.
Ben sent his sons upstairs to get dressed and help his brother.
Hoss and Joe found Adam putting on his shirt and tie. Walking over to him
Joe took a long whiff.
“Hey Adam, you sure smell nice.” Joe said rolling his eyes.
“Yeah howdy he does, don’t he. Almost purty like.” Hoss teased batting his eyes at Adam.
“I should, I soaked for a good half hour in a bath of lavender petals.” Adam said.
“Who’s idea was that Adam?” Joe said laughing.
“Lin Se and Hop Sing’s. It’s some type of wedding tradition.” Adam said slightly embarrassed.
“Oh I see, as Hop Sing would say ‘Husband who smell like horse end up sleeping in barn.’ Hoss said chuckling.
“Very funny Hoss.” Adam said shaking his head. I really don’t need this.
“You scared about today Adam? You look like your about to go to the barn with Pa, not getting married.” Joe said handing him his top coat.
“A little nervous, never been married before little brother. Seems unreal at the moment.” Adam said
“She is a fine woman Adam, you take real good care of that filly or you will hear from me.” Hoss said.
“You will hear from me too Adam.” Joe joined in.
“You two just quit being so overprotective. I will always take care of
my Meag; and brothers, she is not to be referred to as a filly.”
“She calls me ‘her angel’.” Joe teased.
Hoss chuckled. “Yeah you’re an angel alright. “When you sleep.” Both brothers said in unison.
“She can’t cook Adam. But she sure is purty.” Hoss teased.
“Well big little brother, she can’t cook that’s true, but that wasn’t as
high on my list as it would be on yours.” Adam chuckled.
“She can sure make you mad older brother. I think half the time you two will be fighting.” Hoss teased some more.
“The other half making up, so I think I win on that point.” Adam said with a big grin.
“Adam, Joe and I have a surprise for you. But you can’t see it until later.” Hoss said glancing at Joe.
“You tell me when, I will make sure Meag is there when you show it to us.” Adam said.
“Oh she will be there. I guarantee it.” Hoss said smiling.
))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Ben finished dressing; he looked longingly at his picture of Elizabeth on his dresser. “Our boy is getting married today Liz, you would love her like I do. Bless you for looking over him and me all this time. I prey he will be happy as we were.” Ben wiped a silent tear away and went downstairs.
Mrs. Shaunessey had finished her cleaning and preparing of the small cabin. Hoss and Joe hired her to make the rustic dwelling which used to be their first home before the great ranch house was built, into a honeymoon love nest. She had candles, rose pedals, lace curtains, a tray of food, it was perfect. For a whooping fee of $40, it was well worth the joy this would bring Adam and Meag.
Beth’s aunt Mary agreed to play her violin for the wedding march. Close
friends were arriving on time. This was a momentous occasion. The first
wedding of a Cartwright son was one for the books.
Meag looked out her window and felt dizzy. “Miss need to eat a little something
before go downstairs.” Lin Se said.
“I can’t Lin Se, too nervous.” Meag said. You eat fruit and cheese while
Lin Se do your hair.”
Meag obeyed, taking small bites as Lin Se worked diligently on her long
hair. Lin Se cascaded her hair in a long flow of curls pulling some of the
top upward. Placing the veil Meag could only stare at the image in the mirror.
“Who is this person. I thank you Lin Se.”
“Most beautiful, very special dress.” Lin Se said admiring her.
The dress was a little snug but in the right places. She was amazed this was almost a perfect fit.
Ben knocked on her door. He was invited in and stood in awe of the woman
before him. Flashback of his Liz sang in his heart.
“You take my breath away Meag. Adam will be so pleased.” Ben said with a
gleam of happiness.
“Thank you Pa.” Meag said kissing his cheek.
“Mr. Cartwright, are all the guests here?” Beth asked.
“Yes,how you faring Meag? Are you ready to join the Cartwright clan?
”
“I’m fine Pa; let’s get knocking as Joe would say.”
))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
The violin played softly, all eyes lifted upward toward the stair top.
Beth Anderson held her bouquet of lilac and roses walked carefully down
the staircase to her position on the other side of Hoss.
As Ben and Meag appeared, a gasp was heard from the gathering of friends.
Meag was a vision to be hold. The dress, the hair, her smile, all captured
in a moment of time. Adam’s mouth was agape for that moment, a stir next
to him he looked down to his little brother. Joe was also memorized by the
vision. Joe looked at the happiness he saw on Adam’s face and smiled.
Hoss exchanged a glance with Joe; they noted Adam was standing as if struck
by a bolt of lightning.
Adam mind was blank all he could do was watch as she descended. The dress,
so lovely, where would she get such a....a tear escaped him as he realized
that was his mother’s dress. Perfect for you my darling. Adam thought to
himself.
This was it, true happiness had engulfed him and for once in his life he
was not afraid to welcome the unknown, Adam embraced it.
The Minister Buford Sanford stood before them. Adam said his ‘to have and
to hold from this day forward....’
When the minister turned to Meag she said her verse with choked emotion.
Adam was instructed to ‘kiss the bride.’
Slowly bending down to her unveiled mouth, he captured her mouth gently
with a respectful kiss which had a hidden promise of more to come, much
more. He could not take his eyes away from her.
“I love you.” She mouthed silently as they were parted by congratulatory
friends.
The guests were all beaming at the young couple. Hop Sing and Lin Se busily
made sure everyone had their fill of food and drink. The couple could not
be happier.
The cutting of the cake with the traditional offering of the piece to one
another. Meag gently shoved the piece in his face. He gently reiterated.
Then kissed off some of the piece himself. With applause from the male sector
of the room. When it came time to throw the bouquet, Meag stood a few steps
on the staircase. Non other than Abigail Jones herself caught the bouquet.
With cheers from the female sector of the room.
Adam hinted that it was time to go.
“Darling, it’s time to go. Let’s say our quick goodbyes and we will be off.”
Adam said taking her hand to his lips.
Meag looked up at him seeing his eyes take on a different meaning. She trembled
a bit.
“So soon, I am not nearly drunk on champagne yet.” Meag teased.
Adam wanted to throw her over his shoulder, but with all these witnesses
he thought better of it.
“Meag let’s say good bye to Hoss and Joe then we will find Pa.” Adam said not letting go of his bride.
Hoss saw that his big brother was getting ready to leave. “Come on Joe let’s tell Adam and Meag about our surprise. Big brother looks like he wants to bolt.” Hoss said with a chuckle.
“Hey, Adam and Meag, Joe and I have a gift for ya.” Hoss said now feeling
a little tongue tied.
Hoss stammered, “Well we wanted you to uh start your wedding night...uh
“ Hoss reddened.
“Yes?” Adam said squeezing Meag’s waist. She blushed as quick as Hoss did.
Hoss was red faced, Joe rolled his eyes. “What Hoss is trying to say is that Hoss and I have a present for you. Remember back before the big house was built Adam?”
“Yes I remember, what is this about?” Adam asked.
“Well, Joe and I paid Mrs. Shaunessey to fix that little cabin up real purty like for your first night, it ain’t the International, but it was our first home here on the Ponderosa Adam, and it should be yours and Meag’s first place for tonight at least.” Joe said looking downward.
Adam and Meag looked at each other and with a big smile Adam hugged his brothers. He didn’t relish the drive all the way into town tonight.
“That is the best present anyone could of given us little brothers. “ Adam said hugging his brothers.
“Hoss, Joe thank you. That is so sweet. Is it far from here?” Meag asked.
“No, not really. We put your gear up at the cabin. That way you two have more time in the morning before Pa and I swing by to pick you two up you.” Hoss said blushing again.
“That just earned you two the brothers of the year award.” Adam said winking at his wife. She was as red as Hoss.
“Well, since we have a little ride to take, let’s bid our guest adieu and
go see Hoss and Joe’s present.”
Adam said taking Meag’s hand. “Alright Adam, let’s tell Pa we are about
to leave.”
“We will go hitch the buggy Adam; we will take the horses over in the morning.” Hoss said.
“And Adam, don’t worry we killed all the varmints we could find in there.” Joe said looking back at them smiling.
“Joe! Now my bride will be wide awake all night!” Adam said looking at the
worried expression on Meag’s face.
“That’s the point of a honeymoon isn’t it big brother?” Hoss said chuckling as he and Joe walked off.
Adam and Meag found Ben with a few other guests. Taking his father aside
Adam wanted to speak to his father. “Pa we are about to leave. We want to
thank you for all of this, we didn’t give you too much time to prepare,
everything is perfect.” Adam said.
Ben held his son for a moment in an embrace. “You two go and god bless you
both tonight. Adam I have something for you two. He reached into his vest
pocket. This is yours now Adam, something to build your dream on. Now go
on, tomorrow will come much too soon. Enjoy.”
Adam looked at the property deed handed to him. It was a substantial piece
of the Ponderosa, a beautiful piece he was to build his home on for him
and his new family. Meag was astounded of the size of it. “Oh Adam you can
design and build us a wonderful home.” She kissed Ben before her husband
whisked her off to their buggy awaiting.
The guests being fed and the wedding cake served, all bid the family good night. The cattle drive would come early. Ben had bid his guest goodbye one by one. He was grateful this was a small wedding. Everyone cheered as they went off in the buggy toward their wedding nest.
“You think they like their present Pa?” Joe said.
“Joe they will treasure this night for the rest of their lives and you and Hoss had made this even more special with your thoughtfulness. I am proud of you both for thinking of it.” Ben said.
“She was so pretty tonight Pa, like a fairy princess.” Joe said.
“Yes, like a vison from heaven Joe.” Ben said.
“Pa, Mr. Devlin is waiting to take me home tonight. I will miss you so much. Please take care of yourself Pa.” Joe said taking a moment to hug his father. Joe hated when his father and brothers went on a cattle drive and he had to stay behind.
“I will son, we will be home before you know it. Be a good boy over there son. I don’t want any bad reports from George about you.” Ben said hugging him back. George Devlin would have his hands full with Joe and Mitch and no school for awhile.
“Bye Pa, I am going to say good bye to Hoss. I know Adam and Meag are probably kissing right now.”
Chuckling Ben let him go. “Yes they probably are.”
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))
The couple arrived at the little cabin. Meag took a deep breath. It was
rustic but welcoming.
Adam helped her down capturing her in a kiss. Picking her up as if she weighed
nothing, he
carried his bride over the threshold. First thing to greet them was a warm
fire, light from some candles delicately placed to give a romantic hue to
the room. Fruit and champagne were set on a table sprinkled with rose petals.
They were touched at the loving care taken to make this a most receptive
and romantic place on earth.
“Oh Adam I love it.” Meag said catching her voice with true emotion. “Look,
there is sweets and food, wine and of course champagne. Could you believe...”
Adam stopped her mid sentence taking her mouth with all the passion he had
been holding back all day. His ardor was overpowering and he wanted to take
possession of her.
“You are going to let me get this dress hung, if we have a daughter some
day, I want pass this dress down to her.” Meag said nervous. Again he picked
her up and took her mouth then trailed his kiss to her neck.
“Adam I want to...get out.. Off this ...dress..” Meag said not able to catch
her breath.
Adam picked her up and took her gently into the bedroom. Setting her on
her feet but not letting go Meag looked up at him.
“Adam could you help me, I can’t reach the buttons.” Meag said turning her
back to him.
“Always will be my pleasure” Adam said huskily brushing her hair aside with his hand.
She trembled with his touch. Adam wanted to sooth her tremors and fears.
Speaking softly as if cooing a wild young horse, Adam spoke with a soothing
rich tone.
“You absolutely stunned me when I first saw you in this dress” Adam said
working each tiny button with upmost care.
“When I realized It was my mother’s dress, I was undone. I remember how
touched Pa was when Grandfather sent it out to him when he married Marie.
He took the dress upstairs and wrapped it so tenderly. Hoss and I were not
allowed near it, Adam said soothingly. Grandpa wrote him a letter that if
a daughter was born to them, maybe she could wear this on her wedding day.
“
“Keep talking to me Adam.” Meag said fighting the shivers of nerves and
anticipation.
Continuing the task of unbuttoning her dress Adam continued.
“I am sorry you did not have your family out here for our wedding, but I
invited them to come anytime they could make it out here. I know you may
have wanted to talk to your aunts about certain things you may be unsure
about on your wedding night.” Adam said warmly.
“I would love to have my aunts come out here, but I wouldn’t talk to those
two about...well you know. They probably be the last ones I would confide
in, they would only tease me to tears. Believe me.
I did have a talk with your father. He was very sweet.” Meag said biting
her lip, each undone button sent shivers down her spine. His touch was so
gentle.
“My father? Adam chuckled. That makes sense sweetheart. You two have become
very close. But Meag, you can always tell me anything, ask me questions.”
“I will Adam. I think we are that type of people that would always talk
things out. Even if you are stubborn as a mule. And I mean that in a most
loving way sweetheart.” Meag said with a smile with her back turned to him.
“Of course and you being the most reasonable lady this side of the Rockies,
we will have some interesting years ahead of us. I never want to go to bed
angry with each other. Promise me we will always be able to talk and be
honest with one another. There, all undone.” Adam said placing a warm kiss
between her shoulder blades.
Turning around to face him. Meag held the dress close to her. .
Taking her chin up with his index finger, he lifted her gaze upward.
“Meag, I would not ever ask you to do something you did not want to do. Did you want to change into something?” Adam said searching those green eyes of hers.
“Yes Adam, hand me my chaps.” Meag said trying not to bust out laughing at the look on his face.
“Meag we were having a tender loving moment...”Adam said with a sigh.
Adam I’m sorry, when I get nervous or self conscious I tend to babble, sorry.”
“I know you are nervous, maybe if I talked to you about what you might expect.”
Talk? He wants to talk about it...oh for corns sake! Meag thought with a little disappointment.
Holding her in a hug he spoke to her some more..
“You see there will be some discomfort darling, maybe a little pain but
that is because...”
‘You smell so good. Real purty like.” Meag said with a nervous giggle.
Adam ignored her, damn that Hoss anyway.
“Can I continue darling? The pain will not last and when we continue to have relations ...”
‘Enough professor ‘ Meag thought to herself. Meag took a step away holding on to the dress.
“Adam I appreciate your tender dissertation of the de-flowering of my virginity. Since when are you such an expert at deflowering virgins, husband?” Meag said with a little fire in her voice.
Adam paled. “I’m not. The only thing I was trying to do was...”
“Darling, I do love you for that. I am nervous, your father said you would be tender and gentle. I don’t want a lecture, I want you to take me in your arms and the rest will take care of itself. I love you Adam, I want you to make love to me.” Meag said stepping out of her dress standing in her chemise and petticoat.
“In that case my love let me finish what I started. Taking care of the unwrapping
of Meag from the rest of her clothing with tender caresses and long kisses
he had picked her up and took her to bed.
Adam’s heart pounding hard in his chest, he held her close kissing her with
hungry desire. He delighted as she asked that he didn’t move as she explored
his body, every inch of his body, with long soft strokes and tender kisses.
Her effect on him was obvious, but neither shied from their bodies reactions
to one another. Adam allowed her exploration until he could stand no more.
Adam gently brought Meag into womanhood.
Catching their breath and slowing their heartbeats, Meag and Adam just
held onto one another. She is too quiet Adam thought.
“Are you alright, I am sorry if I hurt you darling.” Adam said kissing her
shoulder.
No answer, he took a closer look. She actually was staring straight up at
the ceiling.
“Talk to me Meag.” Adam said cuddling close.
“Give me second. I’m still trying to figure something out.” Meag said quietly.
“What would that be? “ Adam said curiously.
“Well, when we are in our tent and ‘you’ groan and moan like that real loud like, won’t that stampede the herd?” Meag said with a straight face.
Clearing his throat Adam propped himself on one elbow. “First off my darling girl, I thought you were not sure I was staying in the tent during the cattle drive, glad you changed your mind. Did you change your mind recently, maybe about a few of your own delicious groans ago? And second of all my love, “My groans and moans were nothing compared to your yelling out, nearly took my ear out. Now that might start a stampede.” Adam said unable to suppress his smirk.
“I DID NOT...” Oh you are awful! She hit his arm as he chuckled.
“Come here closer Meag. I’m sorry. Are you alright, really?” Adam said bringing her even closer.
“Let’s just say when I am in the riding tomorrow, I will be thinking of you.” Meag said kissing his chin.
“Sweetie, when you’re in the saddle tomorrow you will be thinking of me. I will be thinking of you and having another night together in our tent.” Adam said snuggling her neck.
“Oh uh Adam, how long until we reach San Francisco on this drive?” Meag said cuddling close.
“We should make it around the 5th, why?” Adam said questioning her.
“When we are in San Francisco, we can resume our honeymoon for a few weeks,
I also have to tend to some business there. Did you know I have a beach
house Adam? We can spend time there, it’s very secluded. I also have to
tend to my book. You won’t mind if I stay on there for a month or so would
you?”
“A MONTH? And what do you mean ‘resume’ our honeymoon?” Adam said sitting
up.
“Well we can’t very well...stay in that tent together..the men, they will
know...everyone will think..”
“And they would be right. I thought we settled that. I have no intention
of not staying with my wife at night. We will be in our tent, Pa will see
to it that we are set off by ourselves darling. As for you being away from
me for an entire month, that we need to talk about.
But right now my love, Adam began kissing her deeply with renewed passion.
“Never stop Adam, never stop kissing me ever.” Meag said surrendering to her own passion.
A few hours later she fell asleep in his arms. Adam watched her sleep for
a while more before he closed his eyes and let his fulfillment lull him
to slumber.
))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
As the dawn broke Adam awoke at first disoriented. Her warm body next to
him stirred his memory and lust once again. She moaned and awoke looking
at him with sleepy eyes. “Morning Mrs. Cartwright.” Before she could reply
he was making love to her. No pomp and circumstance this time just urgent
lust.
Afterwards Meag was a bit astounded.
“What the hell was that?” Meag said holding her still heavily breathing
husband.
“Meag I don’t know what that was, I woke up feeling your warm body and next
thing I knew?well here we are. Now I hope that doesn’t happen on the trail,
we might be spending a lot of time in our tent or behind the trees.”
“Oh I don’t think Pa would like that very much.” Meag said kissing him.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Ben was giving last minute details to Hoss. Sure seemed strange just the
two of them this morning.
“Hoss, when you see Meag and Adam, make sure she had something to eat before
they leave. I won’t have my girl dizzy with hunger.
“Yes sir Pa. I am sure food is utmost on their minds right now.” Hoss said with a twinkle in his eye.
“Don’t be flip young man.” Ben said with a familiar tone.
“Yes sir, sorry Pa.” Hoss said not letting that chuckle escape him.
‘Meet you at Red Ridge by noon. Tell Adam I expect him to meet me at the lead.”
“Yes sir, see you at Red Ridge.” Hoss said waving to his father.
Riding up to the small cabin, Hoss was hoping they would be outside already.
No such luck. His face reddened. He would surely hate to interrupt something.
Hoping his keen eared brother would hear him ride up Hoss tried to make
some noise.
“We are up little big brother. Good morning Hoss.” Adam said from behind him.
“Morning Adam, Meag ready to go? Pa said make sure she eats something before she leaves.”
“She ate some fruit, coffee and some muffins Hop Sing left for us. I will make sure she has food with her today. Hoss I am intrusting you with my girl today, don’t let her do anything reckless. I give you may permission to smack her backside if she needs it.” Adam said seeing Meag in the corner of his eye.
“ADAM STODDARD CARTWRIGHT!”
Hoss and Adam chuckled as she stamped her foot.
“Sorry sweetheart.” Adam said cinching up his saddle, winking at Hoss.
“Meag I am going to meet Pa at the head of the herd, we will meet you and Hoss later for lunch at Red Ridge. Got all your gear?”
“Yes, I think so, I have to make sure I have enough writing material in my pack. Adam can I have a kiss before you go?” Meag said longingly. She didn’t want to be separated from him so soon.
“I’ll go check on Meag’s horse.” Hoss said getting away from the love birds.
Adam took her into his arms. His thoughts went back to this morning and last night then he had to will his body to not react so instantly.
Feeling his body close to her she sighed. “Adam, you can’t go around like a walking saddle horn.” Meag whispered..
Adam shook his head “Oh Meag you have no idea how you affect me my wife.”
“I think I do.” Meag said flashing a big smile.
“You’re right I have to just not think about you in my arms every second.
I might just ride off a cliff. And you, stop looking so adorable. I love
you buddy. Love you with all that I am. Be safe today, listen to Hoss. Until
later darling.” He picked her up and kissed her sweetly.

Ben greeted Adam as he rode up. “Well good morning son. Hope you are well rested this morning.” Ben said teasing.
“Well I could of used a few more hours of sleep...” Adam said with a full
dimpled smile.
“How is Meag feeling this morning, not too much champagne last night?” Ben asked with a smile.
“No sir, she is feeling well. She ate a breakfast and her and Hoss will meet us at Red Ridge. And Pa thank you for yesterday, everything was wonderful. I want to thank Hop Sing and Lin Se for all their hard work. It was wonderful wasn’t it Pa.”
“Yes son. It was a wonderful wedding. Was the cabin to your liking?” Ben asked knowing they would of been happy with anything.
“It was very romantic, we couldn’t of been happier if we were in a grand hotel. Pa, I am taking your advice. I am living every moment, not giving in to what if’s.” Adam said.
“Glad to hear it, now let’s get this herd moving on. The sooner we get to San Francisco the better.”
The first day of the drive is usually the hardest for the new wranglers. For Meag it was no different. She had never ate so much dust, smelled so bad or felt so sore in her entire life. She tried not to show it. She definitely would not complain. Hoss kept a close eye on her as she would expect he would.
By the time she reached Red Ridge, she was done in. Adam and Ben came riding
up to her.
“Well you made it, I was about to come looking for you.” Adam said concerned.
“Adam you said noon, it can’t be too much later than that.” Meag said wiping her brow.
“It’s an hour after that, I was getting worried. Hoss said you were right behind him.”
“I was until that some steers decided to take a little stroll in the bush. But I had a talk with them and here I am. Any food left?” Meag said looking for something to eat.
“Adam let the girl eat.” Ben said as Adam threw up his hands and stomped off.
“Thank you Pa. Talk to him, I am doing the best I can. If I get into trouble I know Hoss or one of you will be there. I am still learning.” Meag said.
“I will talk to him, see that you be careful.” Ben said pointing a finger at her.
The rest of the day, Meag did her best to keep up with the rest. She got bogged down a few times in the muck and mire, but managed. Another few hours in the saddle going over hills, gullies and ruts, Meag was done in.
The camp never looked so good.
Seeing the tent set up off to the edge of camp she went in and plopped down
on the coverlet. Hop Sing came in with a warm bucket of water and her satchel
and woke her. “Missy get clean before sleep, brush hair. Soap and towel
right here.”
“Bless you Hop Sing.” Meag said. She wanted to clean up before Adam showed
up. She undid her braids, and brushed her hair out leaving it to cascade
down her back. Taking the soap she scrubbed and scrubbed. Changing into
a different shirt and britches she almost felt human again. She certainly
smelled better. She took the bucket outside and met up with Hop Sing. “Aww
vely nice. Now don’t smell like cow.”
“Thank you, I feel better. Can I help you here; you have your hands full.”
Meag said rolling up her sleeves.
“You do what Mr. Cartwright say, stay in tent. Men come around see you, all trouble?work on book.”
“He did say that didn’t he. I will go back. But again thank you Hop Sing.”
Meag got some serious work done on her book waiting for Adam. She dropped
off asleep until she was awakened by a most delicious kiss. “Hoss is that
you?” Meag said sleepily.
Adam pinched her bottom. “One of these days Meag I am going to ...umm “
Meag cut him off with a most welcomed kiss parting her lips and probing
his mouth with her tongue. “You smell good, real purty like.” He said with
a grin.
“You don’t.” Meag said chuckling.
“Sorry darling. I just had to have a kiss before I washed up. I will reverse that next time.” Adam said getting up.
“I am hungry; can I get out of this tent for awhile?” Meag said feeling a little trapped.
“We can take a walk later if you feel up to it. Meag, you have to do what Pa said about staying in your tent as much as possible. There are reasons, some of the men are let’s just say not too keen on having a female tagging along.” Adam said.
“I will do as your father wishes. Even mind you once in awhile.” She said grinning.
“Oh well, what more could a man ask for. A wife that is beautiful, obedient and a vixen in bed.”
“Obedient! I said I would mind what you say once in awhile!!” Meag said hotly.
“Oh, and would that be today?” Adam said sarcastically.
“That my dear depends. I hope you didn’t think you married a woman who is docile and ignorant.” Meag said with a sniff.
“I KNOW my wife is not docile, at least I prey she is not, and as for ignorant,
you and I know better. I would like it if you would listen to my instructions
when it comes to being out here on the range. This is my domain and I want
to keep you safe, not trying to put you under my thumb.”
“I like your thumbs.” Meag said with a seductive glint.
“Can we ever finish a serious conversation?” Adam said taking her in his arms.
“I hope not.” Meag kissed him using some newly acquired skills she learned from him last night.
“Meag I am going to wash, feed us both then we will retire early. I just hope we get at least one hour sleep.” Adam said with a big grin.
“Insufferable man,” Meag said chuckling.
“Keep that thought, I am going to wash up.” Adam said leaving her.
Ben met up with Adam. “How’s my daughter doing? I am going over to speak to her. Why don’t you go get some food.”
“I was going to do that Pa. She is already getting stir crazy staying in the tent.” Adam said rolling his eyes.
“I will speak to her while you get cleaned up and some food.” Ben said heading toward the tent.
“Pa. You and Hoss have chow with us tonight.”
“Well we wouldn’t want to intrude on your ‘honeymoon’. Ben said with a grin.
“When we get to San Francisco then you might see a do not disturb sign, but this is far from your typical honeymoon.
“You know Adam, Inger and I had a similar honeymoon period. when we left to go west. We also had a little boy named Adam who was determined not to give us any privacy.” Ben said.
“I do remember being sent to bed earlier than normal a few times.” Adam said with a smirk.
“Probably because of that smart mouth of yours.” Ben said with a raised eyebrow Adam knew well.
“Yes sir.” Adam said with clearing his throat. “Well I better get cleaned up and food for my bride. I will tell Hop Sing we are all eating at the tent area.” Adam said taking his towel and soap.
Hoss, Adam and Ben joined Meag for supper that night. Meag was tired but
that didn’t stop her from being in good spirits. Hoss teased her about wearing
that colt revolver and carrying her rifle along.
“Yes sir Pa, Adam there was Meag when that ol’ steer giving her heck and
bellowing at her. I thought she was gonna shoot it between the eyes right
there.”
“Oh Hoss I got him moving on, you quit making my husband here nervous.” Meag said glancing at Adam.
She got him moving alright, she took a briar bush to him. He looked more surprised than Jake and Jed Myers.” Hoss said laughing.
“My lady does have her way of making point gentlemen.” Adam said squeezing her shoulder.
“I miss my angel. I hope he is doing alright at the Devlins.” Meag said.
“Oh you mean Little Joe. Yes I can’t help thinking about him every minute myself.” Ben said.
“Angel, yeah he is an angel alright. “When he sleeps.” Ben, Adam and Hoss said together.
“Pa, we are taking some cattle to Red Creek right? Ol’ Rosey expects beef this year right, and that Bella sure is a pistol.” Hoss said with a grin, a grin that soon faded as he caught a hard glare from Adam.
Hoss quickly changed the subject.
“You know Pa, there seems to be more geese flying this year. Maybe we can go hunting.”
Adam cleared his throat; Meag caught a look between Hoss and Adam.
“I will leave that up to Adam. Let’s get some rest, tomorrow we have another
long day.” Ben said
.
“Goodnight Pa, and thank you for yesterday. It was wonderful wasn’t it?”
Meag said.
“Yes it was, wonderful.” Ben kissed her forehead goodnight. Hoss in turn did the same.
That night after making love, Adam held her close. Meag was quiet, unusually quiet.
“You feeling alright Meag, you seem quiet.”
“I am tired, but more importantly I am trying to figure out something. I’m just thinking too hard.” Meag said cuddling closer with her back to him.
“You have a lot to think about. We have to start thinking of planning our home. How many rooms, split level, I would like to try a large deck all around the house. What do you think of something like that Meag?
“Yes sounds nice, but I want to ask you something. What is in Red Creek
you don’t want me to see? Or is that whom?” She said.
“Meag. Drop it.” Adam said a little too forcefully than he meant to.
“Yes. I will drop it, when you answer me.” Meag said flatly.
“Alright. In Red Creek is a woman I used to know. I do not want you to be hurt by that. So that is why I do not wish you to go to Red Creek.”
“I am not naive Adam. You are obviously an experienced lover. I am sure
you didn’t learn all your skills by reading naughty dime novels. You don’t
still want to see her do you?” Meag asked with her back still turned to
him.
“Heavens no! How could you ask me that? You and I share a love I have never
had dreamed of before. I am blessed to have found you. I am looking forward
to our lives together; we have so much to look forward to. Look at me Meag.”
Adam turned her toward him.
“Never keep things from me Adam, I can take anything, but I can’t take you hiding things from me.” Meag said tears slipping from her eyes.
“I’m sorry Meag, you are right as rain. What do you want to know?”
“Just her name, maybe I should send her a thank you letter. You are an exceptional lover.”
“Meag”
“Yes Adam.”
“Go to sleep.” Adam said kissing her neck.
The next few days everyone worked hard driving the cattle hard. The weather seemed to cooperate so far. Hoss checked on Meag by doubling back. “Gal you look plum done in, go take a rest.”
“Hoss I am fine, don’t be such a mother hen, you are worse than someone else I know. Go on now, I’m ok. “
Ben surveyed the river. It was higher and deeper than normal this time
of year.
His first thought was of Meag. She was an excellent horsewoman but could
she stay on in such a swift current. Adam rode up to the ridge and joined
his father. He too echoed Ben’s fear that she may not be able to handle
the crossing.
Two men tried to cross but turned back. Yelling up to Ben on the ridge.
“Not here Boss, too deep, too swift!” Jeb yelled.
Turning to Adam, “We will have to find a spot soon or the cattle will scatter. This may cost us a day or so. Ben said frustrated.
“Hey Pa, Adam!!” He yelled.
“What is it son?” Ben said yelling down to him.
“Pa, it’s Meag, she crossed the river. I tried to stop her but she went on across!” Hoss said excitedly.
Adam paled, “Where is she I don’t see her?” Adam said practically standing in his stirrups.
Three drovers were whooping it up hollering and pointing. “There she is, she made it across and she is pointing to the spot she crossed over.” Hoss said.
“She is going to cross over my knee when I get a hold of her.” Adam said lowly to his father.
“Adam you calm down, she is alright. I will talk to her. Go cool off.” Ben said riding down the ridge toward the spot of the crossing.
Ben looked back at his oldest, he was not about to cool off soon. Ben thought
he better get to Meag before Adam did. He crossed just where Meag did, it
was swift but not as deep. Meag rode up to him beaming from ear to ear.
“Hi Pa!!” Meag said unaware of the dark scowl in her father-in-law’s eyes.
“Hi yourself young woman. Get over here.” Ben said crooking a finger at her.
“What’s the matter, I thought I did good, finding a spot to cross.” Meag said confused.
“That was reckless, if you were one of my new drovers and pulled a stunt
like that without checking with me or Adam first or at least Maxwell, I
would send you packing.
It could have cost you your life. You never driven cattle across a river
before, you were lucky to have made it across when you did. This current
could have stumbled your horse, nobody ever crosses alone, not ever. Am
I understood?” Ben said angrily.
“I’m sorry sir, won’t happen again. I suppose Adam is just as angry with
me.” Meag said looking for him.
“I told him to go cool off. Yes he was just as angry if not more.” Ben said
turning away from her.
She waited for the rest to follow across. When Adam showed up, he was still
seething. She hoped he would not chastise her in front of the men.
“Adam don’t yell at me please.” Meag said looking upward to her husband’s angry face.
“I am not going to yell at you. I am going to take you home to the ranch, that is what I am going to do.” Adam said flatly.
“You will do no such thing. I am here for a reason Adam Cartwright and besides this is only day two of our honeymoon, you wouldn’t send me away would you darling?” She said trying to smooth his ruffled feathers.
“You bet I would if it meant saving your neck from your impulsive acts.”
He said angrily.
“Pa gave me quite a lecture, I didn’t really realize how stupid that was.
Now I do. This is my first cattle drive, I made a mistake. I am sure on
your first cattle drive you made some mistakes.”
Meag reasoned.
“If I pulled a stunt like that on my first drive, it would have been my last for some time to come. He would of sent me home with AN ACHING BACKSIDE.” Adam said crossing his arms.
“Well, I apologized to Pa, I am sorry for worrying you sweetheart. Don’t be angry please.” Meag said hugging him.
“I will think about it. Meantime you stay put until everyone is over.” Adam said getting back to help the others across. Hoss rode up to Meag.
“Big brother blister you ears gal?” Hoss said concerned.
“Yes and so did Pa, guess I had it coming.” Meag said feeling a little small right then.
“We all make mistakes pumpkin, Adam is just overprotective of you gal. But if you do a fool stunt like that again, especially after I asked you to wait, you’ll hear from me too.” Hoss said. riding off to join his brother.
That night Adam was still angry until Meag came riding up covered in mud,
muck and heavens knows after falling backwards into a mire. She looked so
comical he had to suppress a laugh.
He had found something that day, he wanted to surprise her with.
“Hello beautiful.” Adam said hardly recognizing she was Meag under all that
muck and goo.
“Very funny Cartwright. Maybe I will just keep these layers of mud on, might keep the bugs off tonight.” Meag said tiredly.
“I have a surprise for you wife.” Adam said sweetly.
“Oh what would that be?” Meag said barely keeping her eyes open.
“First things first.” Adam reached up taking her off her horse then carried her gently.
“Adam, come on now, the men are watching you.” Meag said embarrassed.
“Meag”
“Yes Adam.”
“Shut up.”
Meag put her head down on his shoulder, she had no strength to resist.
Carrying her all the way to the tent he opened the flap. Inside was a warm
steamy bath with rose pedals floating on the surface and two glasses of
wine. “Hop Sing will bring dinner after your bath.” Adam said setting her
down on her feet.
“Oh Adam, this is so wonderful, I can’t tell you. My whole body is screaming today.. I’m not complaining but that hot water looks so inviting. “Where in the world did you find this tub?”
“Pa and I came upon it when we were riding. Sometimes folks who move out west think they can haul everything they own across these mountains. Many people don’t realize just how hard that can be. We can’t take it with us darling, but for tonight the tub is ours.”
“Is there room for two?” She said demurely.
“Yes, I think we can manage.” Adam said kissing the only clean spot on her, her mouth.
“So you are not angry with me?” Meag said slipping out of her muddy clothes.
“At this moment I can say I am not angry.” Adam said with a dimpled grin. She was nearly naked in front of him.
“I see, so you won’t send me packing back to the ranch?” She said slowly taking off the rest of her clothes.
“I won’t be that easy to convince. You will have to ....convince ...me.” Adam said feeling his body react to her closeness.
“I guess I will.” Meag said stepping into the tub.
The tent served well as a shelter from prying eyes. Adam and Meag took full advantage of any time they had to be together. Adam still worried about her being out here, much to her dismay. But she seemed to hold her own, much to her credit. Even some of the men accepted the fact she was along.
“Adam when we build our own home, could we have a tub under the stars?” Meag said cuddling close before they drifted off.
“I will see what I can do my lady. Now let’s get some sleep.” Adam said.
They had made love and he was ‘convinced’ she was not going anywhere but
by his side.
))))))))))))
Hop Sing asked if Ben could send a hunting party out for some fresh meat,
anything but beef seemed a welcome change.
It was a day of hunting that seemed to turn things full circle. Hoss, Adam
and Meag took off with three other men. As they neared a clearing Adam and
Meag went one way, Hoss and the other men went another. “We meet at noon
right here. Adam said.
Hunting was the farthest from Adam’s mind. He thought this would be an opportune
time to get his wife away in the forest.
“Come on I know a place right over this ridge.” Adam said.
“Adam, are you sure there is abundant game here?” Meag asked looking around not seeing anything.
“Oh yes, I see a pink tailed dear right now.” Adam said with a chuckle.
“A pink tailed...oh you are awful.” Meag said blushing turning her back to him.
“Now Meag let’s go over there, see the stream. We could spend the morning....”
“Hunting, we are supposed to be hunting.” Meag said.
“But Meag, Hoss and the others are sure to get enough game; we can just say we couldn’t find anything.” Adam said.
“No Adam. Don’t you see? I want to contribute, please let me do that. If we don’t come back with anything they will think we.....you know what I mean. Besides if we find something early, maybe we could take a little time to uh be together.” She said sweetly.
Adam knew he was being played like a guitar but he agreed.
After finding nothing, Adam stood by a boulder with arms crossed over his chest. Meag, I don’t see any tracks or haven’t heard anything. Let’s take a dip in that pool over there. Would be nice to refresh that way, right buddy?”
“Sounds nice, but I didn’t bring a bathing costume.” Meag said not looking at those playful eyes of his.
“Good thing, I would have more to remove.” Adam smirked.
“And would if the others try to find us?” Meag said with hands on hips looking off to the distance.
“Hoss wouldn’t do that. He will keep them in that direction.”
“How do you know that?” Meag said.
“Besides I gave him $5 to do just that.”Adam said unbuckling his gunbelt.
“Adam I really don’t think this is a good idea.” Meag said now looking at anything but her husband.
“Why don’t you think it is a good idea?” Adam said removing his boots and
socks.
“Because this is someone’s watering hole.” Meag said looking oddly to the right of him.
“Don’t be silly, who’s watering hole? And would you do me the courtesy of looking at me when I am talking to you. Come on Meag, get your clothes off and join me.” Adam said stepping into the water.
Meag picked up her rifle and aimed right at Adam’s head.
“A simple NO would do!” Adam said with a gulp. “Meag?” Adam was not sure what was going on.
“DOWN” she yelled cocking then firing off a round right over his head.
Adam had barely hit the water when a second round was fired off. Angry beyond belief Adam stomped over dripping wet to his wife who was breathing heavily.
“H-he didn’t want to share his watering hole.” Meag said as she stuttered and stepped back. He was angry very angry.
“WHAT THE HELL MEAG CARTWRIGHT, WHO’S WATERING HOLE?”
“HIS” She yelled pointing behind the rock.
Adam took a look. His heart went into his throat. There laid one big dead cougar, shot twice in the head.
“And just how long were you watching him before you nearly shot my head off?” He said pointing at the dead cat.
“Adam I had my eyes on him, I wouldn’t of let him put your cute butt in his mouth if that’s what your so damn mad about. So you’re welcome.” Meag said hotly turning her back on him.
“Welcome for what, taking my head off? I mean I think you had enough time to warn me.” Adam scolded.
Her shoulders shaking. He made her cry, and he felt one foot tall.
“Meag I’m sorry for yelling at you. It’s just that my heart is in my throat still and I do thank you. Please darling don’t cry.” Adam said putting his hands on her shoulders.
Turning her around slowly he was back to being angry, she wasn’t crying but holding in a laugh.
“If I meant to shoot you Adam Cartwright you would be not talking to me
right now.
I admit I could have aimed better but the cat caught me by surprise. It
should have taken one shot not two.” Meag said matter of fact..
“Didn’t aim well? Adam said with raised eyebrow. Well thank god you aimed high then! We may never have children!!” Where did you learn to shoot like that?” Adam said trying to calm his heart beat.
“I was taught early first by my father and then by my aunts after Papa died. My two aunts, Sally and Susan are crack shots, they made a living at it in their earlier days. But are you alright Adam?” Meag said stepping toward him.
“Other than I have a new part in my hair and my heart skipped a beat or two, I’m fine.”
“Are you angry with me or should I let you sulk awhile more.” Meag said staring upward in his dark brooding eyes.
“I am not angry.” Adam said.
Meag stepped closer. Taking one hand and moving his wet hair to the side
of his face.
“You are right to be angry. I saw the cat coming up on you, but I knew I
could take him down.
“I was bait is that it?. If your rifle misfired or worse you missed?” Adam said hotly.
“I would never risk you being hurt my love, I am a good shot, and this is a new rifle.”
Adam was angry with her and she knew it. Then it dawned on her of how true
his words were.
“Oh Adam you are right, you are right to be angry with me. Those things
could of happened and I am sorry, please Adam, tell me you forgive me.”
“I love you and of course all is forgiven.” Adam said.
Then can you hold me please, I need you to hold me.” Meag said walking toward his bare chest. Now she was holding him as if nothing could pry her lose.
“Shhh buddy, we are alright. Look at me Meag. Adam raised her chin with his finger. She had glistening eyes. We are alright, both of us.” Adam said holding onto her and stroking her hair.
That night the subject of what happened with the cat came up. Ben held his breath as Adam told the tale. Meag sat next to Adam always holding his hand or wrist or even a pinkie finger. She had to be touching him. “My girl, I never knew you were such a shot. With that big cat around, that is probably why no game was in your area. Hoss and Jake pulled down a few deer, some geese and a half dozen rabbits. Hop Sing is happy once again.” Ben said with a smile.
“Tomorrow young lady, you will ride with your father-in-law. Adam and Hoss
and some others will be taking some of the herd to Red Creek. We have a
standing agreement with a few of the business people there.”
“Meag trust me there is nothing there. You stay with me tomorrow.” Ben said
determined to keep her out of Red Creek..
“You know best Pa. I think I will retire early tonight. Good night all.”
Meag said kissing Ben, Hoss and squeezing Adam’s arm. “I’ll be right there
darling.” Adam said sweetly.
After she was in her tent, Adam, Ben and Hoss looked at each other. “Thanks
Pa. I have no intention of introducing my wife to Red Creek anytime soon.”
Adam said.
“I think she would like Rosey, Adam. Maybe even Bella.”
“Uh no Hoss, Bella would not be a good idea.” Adam said thinking of a few indiscretions he had with that saloon girl in the past. If Meag met up with Bella it may mean he maybe the first Cartwright divorced before his honeymoon was over.
The next day Meag stayed with Ben driving cattle, most into the afternoon.
Hoss and Adam had separated a number of cattle toward Red Creek with about
six other men. Meag’s woman intuition kicked in about Red Creek.
Although Adam and Meag ‘talked’ about things, she still felt he was holding
back.
There would be no barriers, no secrets, no denials between them. Meag made
up her mind to go to Red Creek.
Slipping behind further from the herd Ben lost sight of her. She waved
him on the last he saw of her.
Sending one of the hands in her direction to find her, he came back with
the news she was not with the herd, in fact she was nowhere to be found.
Ben asked to speak to John and the new man Stillman.
“My daughter-in-law, have you seen her today?” Ben asked without wasting
anymore time.
“The girl sir?” John said nervously.
“Yes, the only girl on this drive John. I have a sinking feeling she left the drive to go to Red Creek.. Is that a true statement or not? Be aware any deception either paid for or not will meet with you picking up your pay. Now the truth, do you know if she went to Red Creek?”
“Yes sir, she paid me $20 to shut up about it.”
“Thank you John. Tell Max he is in charge until I return.” Ben said taking off toward Red Creek..
Adam and Hoss finished putting the last of the herd in the corrals. “There you go Rosey, all safe and sound.”
“Great fellas, how about you and your drovers come in for some home cooked stew. It’s real good tonight.”
Hoss looked hopeful but Adam wanted to get back to Meag. “I think I will pass. Got me a wife now Rosey, she is back with the herd.”
“Oh well congratulations Adam, I had no idea. With the herd you say. Must
be a real hard woman, that could be rough.
“She is a writer by trade, needs to research ...never mind it is complicated.”
“Better Bella hears your married from you I reckon. She is probably at the saloon.”
“Hoss go find the other men, tell them supper is at Rosey’s tonight. You and I will be heading back..” Adam said getting rid of his 16 year old brother from Rosey’s blabbing mouth.
“Sure Adam.” Hoss said.
With Hoss out of earshot Adam spoke plainly to Rosey. “I don’t need to explain anything to anyone, especially one Bella Boxer.”
“Explain what pre tell Adam Cartwright.” Bella said swinging the door open. I heard you were in town. Come on lover, the evening is young.”
Adam looked at her probably with open clear eyes for the first time. “Bella, I am recently married to a most wondrous woman who is waiting for my return. I bid you good night and good bye.” Adam said tipping his black hat.
“Married, who the hell cares. Come on Cartwright, I could use your big...”
“I care. The men can stay have dinner then head back. I am heading back now.” Adam said coldly.
“Gonna miss me sugar...she probably will appreciate it .......”
She was talking to air. He was gone to gather his brother and go back to
the herd.
Standing outside the Saloon was Meag Cartwright. She remembered two names
Hoss let slip about Red Creek. “Rosey and Bella.” This was a small town,
shouldn’t be hard to find out.
Meag went into the saloon with false bravado. She had to appear not fluxed
by it.
“Hey dollie you lost or something?” said the bartender George..
“If this is Red River, I am not lost.”
“We serve drinks her dollie, not tea and cakes.”
“Well that’s a relief buster, give me a bottle of whiskey and two glasses.”
“That’ll be two dollars miss “...George said
“Here’s $5 now I need some information too.” Meag said.
“Here now, what information are you needing anyway?”
“Just want to talk to a gal named Bella. You know her no doubt.”
“Bella works here, should be here in about 30 minutes. Now, that will cost ya extra, holding up my best saloon gal for a chat.” George said greedily.
“Here’s a $20 gold piece.” Meag said and sat in her corner table.
Taking a few drinks she decided whiskey was better by the second drink,
not the first.
Bella Boxer showed up still smarting from Adam’s rebuff. George motioned her over. “Better not be bawling me out ol’ man I ain’t late.” Bella said.
“That girl in the corner paid a $20 gold piece to talk to ya. Keep it short if ya can, cattle drive brought some men in tonight and I need ya to be friendly.”
“Don’t worry, for that kind of money must be one of those crying bitches over her husband wandering. I will make it short and not so sweet.” Bella said with a smirk.
“You want somethun dearie? George over there said you wanted to buy drinks. Well I need one right now.” Bella said sitting down.
“Yes, I wanted to meet you. Have what you like, come sit a spell.” Meag said eyeing this woman. Obviously had a hard life. Maybe a few years older than she even Adam. Too much makeup trying to hide that. But I bet she has an interesting story. Meag said to herself.
“Whiskey is fine. Well honey what is it?” Bella said trying to size up this half pint of a girl.
“I wanted to meet you personally. You see, I am Mrs. Adam Cartwright. I believe he knows you.”Meag said knocking back another whiskey. She hoped she wouldn’t start coughing. She did not let her eyes even blink. She watched Bella with full interest.
“Well, well. The little woman comes to Red Creek. Funny I just invited Mr. Adam Cartwright up to my room for a romp.” Bella said knocking back her whiskey. Bella expected tears to be flowing any minute now from this little slip of a woman..
“Well, what did he say?..” Meag said holding her breath but not taking her eyes off Bella.
Bella was surprised, this little lady had some spunk after all.
“He said he was married to a wonderful woman and he bid me good bye and
good night. I expect he was going back to the drive. Back to you I guess.
I won’t lie to ya, when he would make the drive some time back, he would
come to this town and show me a good time, real generous too. But I seen
a change in him. I guess that change is you honey. Good for you.”
Meag smiled. “Good for both of us. Everybody, drinks are on me.” Meag said
taking a third whiskey or was it her fourth.
The whole bar was in a celebrator mood.. Bella and Meag were singing an
old Irish song loudly and badly when Ben Cartwright showed up. One of Ben’s
drovers walked over to him.
“Sir we have been keeping an eye on Mrs. Cartwright, we would take her back
by force if necessary, but since you showed up...” Jason said worriedly.
The look on Ben’s face was one of dark foreboding.
“Jason you and men head back. I will take care of her. Have you seen Adam
or Hoss?”
“Adam went back to the herd with Hoss two hours ago. He didn’t know Meag
showed up.”
“PA!” Meag yelled through a drunken haze. Come on Pa, we are celebrating
Adam and my marriage, hey everybody, it’s my Papa in law Ben uh uh...” Meag
stuttered..
“Cartwright.” Ben said shaking his head.
Bella chuckled. “You got a real great girl here Ben, real firecracker.”
Ben gave Bella a look she understood. “Don’t worry Ben. Mrs. here and I
had a little talk. She and Adam will be very happy together. I wouldn’t
hurt this little thing for the world.”
“Thank you Bella.” Ben said a little relieved there wasn’t a brawl between the two women.
“Come on gal before I have to carry you out.” Ben said taking her by the arm.
“Mr. Cartwright, better take her for coffee. She is no shape to ride.” Bella said.
“Yes, I will get some coffee and food into her if I can. I usually have to deal with this sort of thing once in a great while with my boys. This is a first for me.” Ben said taking Meag by the arm.
“Hey misler, let go of er’ she just trying to have a good time.”a bar patron yelled.
“Her good times are done for the night gentlemen, good night.” Ben said trying to get a staggering Meag out of there.
“Are you angry wif me ...sir?” Meag said looking at him cocked eyed.
“We will talk about that later.” Ben said rolling his eyes.
Adam and Hoss were almost back to the camp when Max rode up to greet them.
“Your Pa rode into Red Creek, looking for Meag. Thought you ought to know.”
Max said.
Hoss saw his brother’s face turn three shades of red.
‘Oh lordy’ Hoss thought to himself.
Adam rode full tilt back to Red Creek..
“So this is your new daughter-in-law hey Ben?” Rosey said with a smirk.
“She needs coffee, apparently she and Bella were celebrating.” Ben said with a raised eyebrow.
“Well I’ll be switched, that girl making friends with Bella.” Rosey said.
“She had the whole saloon singing and believe me if anyone could soothe Bella Boxer’s ruffled feathers about Adam, it would be her.” Ben said shaking his head.
It didn’t take Adam long to make it back to Red Creek. His horse was lathered from the effort.
“Sorry boy, I’ll see to it you’re cooled down. Adam left Sport at the livery
for extra care to be taken.
Walking into the saloon, Adam looked around. “Hey Adam, if your looking
for yer lady, she is with your Pa at Rosey’s. She’s a bit under the weather.”
Bella said with a laugh.
“If you hurt her..” Adam said in a menacing tone.
“Hurt her, hell, we all had a kicking good time until your Pa showed up that is. I like her Adam, we were celebrating you’re weddin’, she got a little tipsey. I’m sorry how I talked to you earlier, hope the best for you and that little squirt.” Bella said.
“I see, I’m sorry too Bella. I am going to fetch her back to camp now.” Adam said turning toward Rosey’s.
“Meag you have to eat something. Come on dear, have some of this coffee.”Ben said coaxing her.
“Pa, I can ride come on let’s go, Adam will be worried.” Meag slurred.
“I think I will be more than that Meag Cartwright.” Adam said in a flat tone coming through the door.
“Hey buddy, what are you doing here?” Meag said trying to sit up straight.
“What am I doing here!” Adam said rolling his eyes.
“Let’s get some coffee into her and then get back to the herd. Tomorrow morning we will have a nice talk, won’t we Meag?” Ben said sternly.
“Sure Pa, anything you say..hic...say.” Meag said with a goofy look on
her face.
Adam sighed, Meag was falling asleep sitting up. “I am going to get Sport.
We can ride double. Could you take her horse Pa?” Adam asked.
“Sure, I guess that is the only way to get her back.” Ben said bone tired.
Meag slept holding onto Adam all the way back to camp. Hoss was concerned when he saw her being carried to the tent.
“She alright Adam, she didn’t get hurt did she?” Hoss said.
“She is not hurt but tomorrow that’s another story. She got a little tipsy
with Bella.” Adam said.
“Drunk? Are you sure big brother, she looks like she is just sleepy.” Hoss said disbelieving.
“Goodnight Hoss.” Adam said carrying his wife off to bed.
Adam deposited her in her bedroll taking off her boots. “My blushing little
bride, drunk as a skunk.”
He gave her a kiss and tucked her in. He had to chuckle to himself. There
would no skirting around this little bloodhound, no siree. He wouldn’t have
it any other way, and neither would she.
The next morning Meag was paying the price. She woke up feeling like she
was shot in the head. “Ohhh ...She ran outside as she felt she was going
to retch. After emptying her stomach several times she almost crawled back
to bed.
Hop Sing gave her some powders and just ‘tsk tsk’ as he did not understand
why she had to do such a thing.
Adam wasn’t as merciful. Grabbing the blanket from over her head he woke
her with a shake.
“Morning Meag, Pa wants to see you. Get dressed and get washed.” Adam said.
“I will see him later. I got to sleep.” Meag said putting the covers over her head.
“No buddy, Pa wants to see you and we are not stopping a whole day just so you could sleep off a hangover. Now get up before I get you up.”
“But Adam..”
“You are my wife but you are also his employee. Get up.” Adam said throwing off her covers.
“Alright, alright. I will be right there.” Meag said not sure how she could
face her father-in-law alone or even stand straight without wincing.
Washing quickly, the feeling she was about to face a firing squad crossed
her mind. Her husband didn’t seem to thrilled to see her this morning, and
she dreaded the look of disappointment she may see on her father-in-laws
face.
She went up to Ben as he was finishing his coffee. “Sir you wanted to speak
to me.” Meag said trying to be contrite.
“Come with me young lady.” Ben said a low tone.
They walked to a nearby stream. “Sit down on that rock over there.” Ben said sternly.
“Ben let me start, I am...”
“Quiet Meag, you will hear me out and not interrupt me.” Ben said pacing.
“Yes sir.”
“When I allowed you to join on this drive I gave you rules. Did I not?”
Ben said crossing his arms on his chest.
“Yes, you gave me rules.” Why is he yelling my head is splitting.
“And yesterday when I told you to stay with me yesterday, you broke one important rule. Didn’t you?” I think we had this conversation about doing what you are told to do on this drive just yesterday or did you forget so easily?” Oh god, I think I am going to be sick again. Meag thought.
“Yes but can I say....” Meag said but was cut short.
“No you may not say, you will not interrupt me again or so help me. Now, we have exactly 8 or so days left of this drive and you young woman will spend them helping Hop Sing for at least the next five days then riding along with me the rest of the way.”
“You know I can’t cook, why poison your men?” Meag said trying to get a smile from her father-in-law,.it didn’t work.
“You won’t be cooking, believe me. But you will do anything Hop Sing tells you to do. Let me make something clear. You are my family now Meag Cartwright. When I give an order to one of my children, and you are one of mine now, I expect you to not disregard, disobey or ignore my orders. Is that clear young lady?”
“Very clear, I am sorry. But it was your and Adam’s fault you know.” Meag said boldly.
“What did you say?” Ben said with a raised eyebrow. Any Cartwright son would have stopped talking about right then.
“You heard me Benjamin Cartwright. You and Adam wanted me to stay away
from Red Creek because of some past involvement he may have had with a woman.
If I did that I may not be allowed to go anywhere within a 400 mile circumference!”
Ben tried to hid his grin.
“Bella Boxer was a woman from my husband’s past, I love you for trying to
save me some hurt. But believe me when I say I could never be jealous of
someone from his past. Past is past and our lives started the day we met.”
Meag said kissing him on his cheek.
“You are an amazing woman. Not too many women would be so generous.”
“Oh, well I am not entirely so generous. You see I told Adam if he ever went near that woman again I would scratch her eyes out then start in on him. He said he believed me. So I win.” Meag said cracking a grin.
Ben started laughing like he never had before. “Meag you remind me of not one of my wives but all three on so many levels. Welcome to the family my dear, welcome to the family.”
“Thank you Pa, so all is forgiven and I can go back to riding with Hoss?”
Meag said with a nod.
“Hop Sing expects you before 4 a.m I suggest you get some sleep.” Ben said laughing at the look on her face as he turned and left.
Hoss and Adam met up with Meag after her lecture from Pa.
Well Meag, you need a cushion to sit on? Hoss joked. Meag gave him a look,
which shut him up fast.
“I wish it was over that quick. No, I am to help Hop Sing for the next 5
days. I guess that won’t be so bad. I’m probably getting off light for my
‘disobedience.’ Meag said with rolled eyes.
Adam and Hoss looked at each other and chuckled.
“You are to help Hop Sing, oh that is not good.” Adam said shaking his head.
“So I am being punished for going to Red Creek?”
“Big time little girl, big time.” Adam said walking away.
Oh how bad could it be. Meag thought to herself.
Adam took her hand. “Meag let’s go for a walk.”
Meag was quiet, She was still smarting from Ben’s lecture, she was in no
mood for another.
“Adam, Pa blistered my ears just now, if you’re going to start in I just assume postpone it.”
“Why did you do it Meag, I have to know why.” Adam said his eyes dark and menacing.
“I felt you were holding back on me. Even Hoss knew something was amiss and I was going to get to the truth of it. It is my way, I will find the answers whether they are pleasant or unpleasant about Red Creek.”
“What did you find?” Adam said crossing his arms across his chest.
“I talked to Bella Boxer, we talked and laughed and sang songs. I think we did, anyway, we become friends. I have no jealousy of her my love. I just need to understand why you would be with her. Is she a good lover Adam?”
“Meag I am not going to answer that.” Adam said getting more angry. “Meag
Cartwright you took a foolish risk that might of turned out very differently.
You will listen to me, and listen to me good!”
Taking her into a fierce hug Adam was shaking with emotion. “You could have
been hurt last night. Taking your tired horse to that town, alone in the
hours of dusk. I bet you just made it before the sun came down. Then to
go to this rough-neck town all alone walk into a saloon, pretty as you please,
ordering whiskey which you are not accustomed, Red Creek is a rough town
any one of those men in there could have taken you out back and had their
way with you.!!
Damnation woman if you ever do that again...I have lost loved ones in my
life because of foolish risks and I will not lose you, they died because
of no good reason other than being FOOLISH.!”
Adam was shaking, he put his face in the crook of her neck.
Meag came undone...She had hurt him. Her tears flowed ..Oh Adam I am sorry,
so sorry. Your right, I was one foolish woman, please forgive me. I didn’t
think of it that way. Guess I have been on my own too long, you are the
most important person in my life. I have to think of our family that we
will have, our family and our future together. I won’t be foolish again,
I promise.”
“Tell me again Meag.” Adam said trying to compose himself. .
“You are the most important person in my life, I love you and I will not take foolish risks.”
Adam then took by the shoulders staring deep into her eyes.
“If you do Meag Cartwright I am afraid I will put a stop to it once and
for all. Bet on that.” Adam said lifting her chin up. She caught a dark
look in his eyes. “Do you understand me?”
“Adam, you wouldn’t beat me would you?” Meag said with furrowed brow.
“No of course not, but I will put you over my knee, I promise you that.” Adam said as he walked away leaving her with her mouth open.
That night as they lay in the tent after making love. “Adam you don’t think Hop Sing would actually want me before 4 a.m., your Pa was joking right?”Meag said stroking his chest.
Adam chuckled, you better get some sleep, 3:30 comes early darling. Hop Sing might take his spoon to your butt if you’re not up.”
“I wish I never heard of Red Creek.”
” Meag said getting closer to Adam’s warmth.
“Get to sleep.” Adam said patting her hand.
“Oh this won’t be so bad you will see.” Meag said trying to convince herself. Adam snickered.
She soon found out, it was worse than moving cows all day. Hop Sing was a tyrant when it came to orders. There was no doubt about it. Meag would be a lot better off working cattle than being under the thumb of one Chinese trail cook.
The poor girl was so exhausted she didn’t make it past supper clean up. Then she retired to her bed and was rousted up again hours before dawn. Adam was suffering in other ways.
Three days before San Francisco, Adam went to his father. “Pa enough is
enough, I want to take Meag in to San Francisco.”
“I was about to suggest it. She is too exhausted. I want you two to go start
a real honeymoon, on me. Get the best room at the Franciscan, Hoss and I
will meet you two in a few days. Hoss and I will only stay a couple days
before going home to Joseph.”
That evening, Hop Sing fired Meag from his kitchen. “Girl go to husband,
he need you more than Hop Sing, you slow me down.”
“But Hop Sing...Pa said I had. to help you.” Meag said.
“Hop Sing say go to husband, you need rest. Now Go.” He said.
Meag went to the tent to find her husband packing his and her clothing. “What are you doing, you firing me too?” Meag said.
“You my princess are going to San Francisco in the morning with your husband.”
“What, when are you sure?” Meag said tiredly, not believing.
“Yes, Pa is sending us ahead. We will make the sale of the cattle and stay at the Franciscan for two whole weeks. Nothing but room service, hot baths, warm big bed and the only cow will be on our plates.” Adam said swinging her around.
The room was the honeymoon suite. Adam insisted on the one that overlooked
the bay. The balcony was large so they could have their coffee or champagne
out there watching either the sunset or sunrise.
Adam was delighted how his little wife would be uninhibited in their love
making. She would never deny him. Some days later they received a message
and an invitation for lunch with Ben and Hoss. Ben wanted Adam to feel free
to decline if they had other plans.
“Tell Pa we will be there Adam, I miss them.” Meag said.
“I already did. We are to meet them at 1:00 for lunch. I will bet that big little brother of mine will be ‘starving’ by then.
“Oh poor Hoss, I will sneak him some extra cookies from the bakery.” Meag said making her lists.
“You spoil him and Joe you know.” Adam said.
“No more than I spoil you mister.” Meag said kissing his chin.
They met Ben and Hoss at the restaurant. “Meag you are absolutely glowing darling. How are you feeling?”
“Wonderful Pa. Adam takes very good care of me.” Meag said squeezing Adam’s
arm.
“He better if he knows what is good for him.” Ben said pointing his fork
at him.
“Hoss here is a little present for you to enjoy in between meals.” Meag said handing him a box of some fancy cookies from the bakery.
“Hey thanks Meag, you know what I like.” Hoss said a little embarrassed.
“Pa I have something for Joe, before you go back please remember to pick it up.”
“So when are you going to return?“ Ben asked both of them.
Adam looked at Meag. He reluctantly agreed she need time to return. He hated the thought of leaving her behind but it was a matter of getting things done and he knew it.
“My good wife will be staying for another month or so, she has to finish her book, the sale of her house is almost complete and she has to decide what to put in storage and what to sell. So my girl will be one busy lady.” Adam said with more conviction then he was feeling.
“Well when you return Meag, we are going to throw one big party.” Ben said sipping his drink.
A nice looking brunette walked up to the table. “Benjamin Cartwright is that you?” She said.
“Catherine Brown, well I’ll be!” Ben said standing, his sons also stood in respect.
“You remember Adam? This is his new bride, Meag Cartwright. This is my middle son Hoss.”
“Congratulations Adam, I know your Pa is very happy having married off one of his boys to such a beauty. Nice to meet you too Meag. Hoss, you may not remember me, but I sold your Pa that bull Blue Boy to him.”
“Oh he is one our good ones Miss Brown. A real hard worker he is.” Hoss said then immediately blushed three shades of red.
“That is ok Hoss, I raised bulls for a living. I know what Blue Boy’s specialty is.” Catherine said squeezing Hoss’ arm.
“And you have another son as I recall.” Catherine said with a smile.
“Yes, Joseph he is 13 now. He is staying with our friends until I return from this cattle drive.”
“What are you doing in San Francisco Catherine?” Ben asked.
“I have a meeting today at this hotel. Then I am taking time to shop and see some theater, the ranch is being sold Ben, I am tired of the fight.” Catherine said straightly.
“I am sorry to hear that.
Catherine’s ranch is near Santa Rosa. She has a fine line of bulls which
is where Blue Boy came from.” Ben added.
“I would like to talk to you Ben if you’re free this week anytime. I am selling off a number of my stock If you can’t join us today Catherine, how about lunch tomorrow around the same time, let’s say 1:00 if your available.” Ben said hopefully.
“That sounds just right Ben. Until tomorrow then. Nice to meet you Meag, hope we can get together before you leave and have dinner and maybe lunch.” Catherine said extending her hand
“I would love that Catherine. Just leave word here or with Ben how I may reach you. Here is my address to my beach house on Stillman Lane. I will be staying on for a month or so.” Meag said handing her a note.
“Good day all, Ben until tomorrow my dear.” Catherine said leaving.
“Meag get that look off your face young woman. We have a business appointment.” Ben said giving her a look.
“Oh what type of business are you two going to discuss Pa?” Meag said innocently.
“About bulls didn’t you hear her.” Adam said not looking at his Pa.
“Yes I think I caught some bull in there.” Meag said trying not to crack up.
“Adam you want to remind your lady what happens when my sons or daughters
are disrespectful.”
Ben said not looking up.
“It isn’t pretty Meag.”Adam said winking at her.
“Tell me Pa, when she sold you that bull Blue Boy. Did you haggle on the price?” Meag said taking a bite of her lunch.
“I’ll say. I remember the go rounds about that bull. She was one determined
businesswoman.”
Adam said with a smirk.
“Oh so she is stubborn, a stubborn woman that is good.” Meag said, letting a small chuckle escape her covered mouth.
Hoss and Adam were enjoying the exchange.
“Well I am glad you made a lunch date with Miss Brown, she seems very nice.” Meag said.
“It’s an appointment, not a date.” Ben said with a raised eyebrow.
“Oh is she going to cut your hair, trim your nails, now that would be an
appointment. No this sounds like a date.”
“Meag.” Ben said in a tone both Adam and Hoss knew all too well.
“Yes Pa you need something?” Meag answered with a half grin.
“Yes, a room alone with you and my belt.” Ben said lowly.
Hoss and Adam could not hold back with their laughter.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Ben’s ‘appointment’ with Catherine Brown lasted over three hours. Three
hours of fine food, laughter, and very little serious business. “Let’s take
a walk on the boardwalk Catherine.”
After another few hours Ben walked her back to her hotel. Well this is where
I am staying for awhile.
“It is lovely.” Ben said.
“Ben thank you for such a wonderful afternoon. I am so glad we finally got
together. Seems every time we planned such a day, some meeting or family
obligation interceded. I am sorry you are leaving the next day. I have a
confession to make. I often wondered what we would be like together if we
ever succeeded on keeping a ‘date’.
“Yes, on my own part, I am sorry for that. Today was wonderful. I knew if we ever got together it would be like this. “Cathy, may I kiss you?” Ben asked taking her hand.
“Well if you had not of asked, I was about to ask you.” Catherine said with a big grin.
“You have the most lovely eyes. Ben stepped closer gently cupping her chin
with his hand. Moving with a slight tilt of his head he covered her mouth
with a warm lingering kiss. The kiss sent an electric current right down
to his toes. It had been some years since he has felt this sensation. This
was their first ‘date’ and he was ready to bed this woman.
Pulling back he looked into her soft brown eyes.
“Ben that was some kiss.” Catherine said with a blush to her cheeks. She enjoyed every second of it. This was their first ‘date’ and she was ready to bed this man.
“I’m sorry if I was improper Cathy.” Ben said trying to gather his wits.
“Ben you were not improper. My thoughts afterwards could be considered improper. Catherine thought to herself.
“My thoughts of undressing you woman right now is most improper.” Ben said to himself.
“Cathy, I think we better take this slower. I frankly do not trust myself
right now. I have a 16 year old boy with me on this trip, and I could not
stay away from him too much longer. But I do extend my invitation to you
to come out to see me, be with me and we shall see where this may lead us,
if you do wish this to be so.” Ben said taking her hand up to his lips.
“I would not be satisfied until I know for sure about you and I. I think we would be wonderful together.” Catherine said.
Ben smiled “I think we would be wonderful together also. I am anxious to find out how wonderful my dear. I think we could be phenomenal.” Ben said stealing a kiss to her cheek.
Ben did not dare another hot lingering kiss, he may just throw all his
teachings and preaching away for just one chance to bed her. He thought
that through and calmed his body reaction to her very touch. He could not
believe the affect she had on him. It was though they were as one just by
a single touch.
)))))))))))))))))))))
Saying goodbye to Pa and Hoss, Meag was tearful. “Give this to Joe for
me. Tell him I will see him soon.”
“Meag please don’t cry.” Hoss said feeling a little choked up himself.
“Hoss, I have some sweets for you and Pa for the trip home. Take care Pa.” She said wiping her tears.
Darling, you will be joining us soon, please don’t cry.” Ben said wiping her tears with his hankie.
Adam just shook his head. Women always with the waterworks.
“Pa I will be leaving by the end of the week.” Adam said hugging Meag who started crying again.
“Meag what is wrong with you tonight?” Adam said. This was not like his girl at all.
“Sorry Adam, I don’t know. I feel sad they are leaving.”
“Meag you take care of this older brother of mine. He needs a lot of looking after.” Hoss said.
“I will Hoss, I always will.” Meag said hugging Adam’s arm.
“Pa how was your appointment?” Meag said with a tearful smile.
“Well I can say in one word, ‘wonderful’ I had a marvelous time.” We have spoken of her maybe coming out for a visit. She wants to discuss that with you Meag. Do me a favor darling and convince her to do just that.” Ben said winking at her.
“I doubt if I have to convince her Pa, if she has a pair of eyes in her head. “ Meag said hugging Ben.
“Don’t go overboard young lady.” Ben said.
“I need another woman in that house, I am outnumbered.” Meag said with a giggle.
“Don’t marry him off now, we could have a higher bidder come in.” Adam said with a chuckle.
“When did I lose all respect from my children?” Ben said.
“Never Pa.” Hoss said with his chin up.
“Time we left young man. Meag you relax and finish that book. We are all
proud of you. Adam enjoy this week my boy. When you return we will ride
out and check your land out. Let Meag be the artist she is and finish her
creation. When she returns she will be yours once again. I love you both.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Meag and Adam did enjoy the week sleeping in, room service, theater plays and walks around town. Adam enjoyed the architecture of the city. They convinced a fisherman one day to take them out fishing on the ocean. Meag got terribly sick and they laughed about that most the night. The last two nights together they stayed at her beach house. Luckily for Adam there was a restaurant right down the street across from the beach. Meag knew the owners and they catered to her and Adam as if they were family.
“Meag, I hope you never sell this place, it is a perfect get-away. I love
it here.”
“I always finish my books here Adam, it was my parents honeymoon cottage,
I bought it some years ago when my first book came out. Imagine I was only
19 and sold a book that was successful, I was higher than the moon.”
Adam and Meag took long walks on the beach. They talked and talked about
their future and
family. She did not want to think about him leaving. “How is the sale of
your other house going?” Adam asked.
“He met my price, did not even haggle. He loves that house. I hope he will
be happy there.”
“That is one thing off your list. Where is that list of yours?” Adam said.
“Oh don’t you tease me about my list. It’s because of you I even have a list.” Meag said.
“Me?”
“Yes, you make me lose track. You jumble my mind with your kisses and caresses. I am not complaining mind you.” Meag said sitting closer to him.
“Well there is only one thing to do then, put in a big supply of paper. Because I won’t stop kissing or caressing you, starting right now.” Adam said true to his word. He picked her up and carried her to the bed.
The last night together Meag had dinner delivered to their love nest. They
included a bottle of champagne on ice. “Ohh champagne, I really wanted to
try it at our wedding but only had a sip or two.” Meag said.
Well then, I will show you a new way to enjoy it my darling.” Adam said
seductively.
Taking his glass he took a bit and dribbled it on her bare chest. Then proceeded
to drink his fill of her..
From there Adam poured a little more on her tummy then lower extremities.
Much to Adam’s delight she reciprocated. The game went on for some time
ending in a heated session of love making until sleep claimed them both.
The morning found Meag stroking Adam’s chest to wake him. “Morning sweetheart.”
Adam said sleepily.
“Morning my love.” Meag said cuddling him.
“Adam when I return and get off that stage coach. I will have a red sexy
nightie for our first night together. You bring the champagne.”Meag said
kissing his chest.
“You liked that champagne last night?” Adam said pulling her on top on him.
“Yes.”Meag said.
“Well if you get a sexy red nightie, be sure to get one with fur on the
bottom darling.”
“Why is that Adam?”
“To keep your neck warm.”
She at first stared at him not getting his meaning then visualized the bottom
of the nightie and she
hit him on the arm. “ Insufferable man, REALLY!!”
Adam was laughing as she hit him with a pillow.
They cuddled most the morning then made love one last time before he had
to dress to leave. The johnny cab would be there to take Adam to the depot.
Meag was heart broken.
“Now, no waterworks young lady, I would hate to leave you with a sore backside.”
Adam said touching her nose.
“That is not what is sore at the moment.” Meag said kissing his chin.
“Sorry I guess we have been over doing it the last few days.” Adam said.
“You are not sorry, and neither am I. I could not get enough of you.” Meag said wiping a tear.
Meag watched her man go and stayed in their bed they shared for the next
few hours. She cried and cried.. She didn’t like to cry in front of people,
she rarely cried until this week. Now she couldn’t turn off the waterworks.
The sooner this book is done the sooner I go home. Meag wrote those words
on a big piece of paper and stuck it in front of her desk. That was her
mantra, her goal.
She found a note Adam left her in her desktop. She opened it and a small flower dropped out.
My Dearest Love,
As you work on your book remember that I am proud of you. Whether you choose
to finish this or not, my heart wants you to be happy and free to be yourself.
Don’t rush for the sake of coming home. Create as I will design our future
home for our upcoming family whether it is just the two of us or as many
children god will be bless us with. I love you wife. You have my heart.
Please remain safe and sound. No foolish risks, remember your promise. Until
you are in my arms again. All my love, Adam
Meag smiled the biggest smile. Taking the note she put it to her heart. She too had left him a love note she hid in his bag. They are a pair, thinking on the same level.
Adam was in deep thought as the stage made its way from San Francisco to Virginia City. The other passenger was a gentleman much the same age as Adam. Taking out his sketch pad, an envelope fell to the floor of the coach. He smiled as he knew she had the same thought he did, leaving a last word.
My Dearest Heart,
I watch you go from my sight but I still see you and feel your touch. I may miss you terribly but it is the thought of you designing our home, building our future that keeps me from running as fast as I can back to your arms. What will I miss most is our late night talks before we drift away to sleep in each other arms. You have my heart, keep me close there. Remember the promise you made to me, you will keep yourself from harm. I promise to do the same. I promise not to eat my own cooking, now that would be a putting myself in harms way. Are you smiling my love? I love your smile especially after you ....oh I am blushing, you get the picture don’t you, you insufferable love of my life. See the tear stain on the page, I kissed the paper like a love sick puppy. That is what you do to me. My love always your Meag, your buddy.
With a smile, Adam cleared his throat and glanced up. The other passenger
was trying not to embarrass him by looking at Adam reading his ‘love letter.’
Adam began jotting down ideas about the house he wanted to design. This
gave him comfort just working on their home. How he looked forward to making
the walls, the rooms come together.
Thinking of their master bedroom he had to smile. Must be large, he envisioned
children running in joining them on a Sunday morning as he and his brothers
had done reading with their Pa, talking and joking. Beside their room would
be nursery. He sketched as if possessed, he put down ideas about best light,
shapes of windows. The one problem he had was trying to figure Meag’s ‘tub
under the stars.’
The other passenger on board wasn’t a talker but seeing Adam sketching
had peeked his interest.
“Excuse me sir, my name is Thomas Liam, I couldn’t help but notice your
sketching. I am an architect by trade. You seem to be designing a grand
building.”
“Adam Cartwright, nice to meet you sir. Just jotting some ideas down for
my new home, mine and my new wife’s home.
“Ahh the first home can be very daunting. I am here to review past plans
that went wrong on a building project. The last architect and contractor
were fired. So they called my firm to review the plans and take over the
project. Could be lucrative or could be a disaster.”
“What went wrong with the project if I may ask?” Adam said.
“The north side seems off kilter, weakening the rest of the structure. I
fear miscalculations from the very beginning. Mr. Liam said.
“Do you have the blue print?” Adam said.
The two men poured over the blue print in the cramp space of the stage
coach. Adam calculated as did Mr. Liam every calculation made by the other
firm. Excitedly Adam came up with one discrepancy. “See they miscalculated
this angle by 24 degrees, that in turn makes this whole wall incorrect.
“By George you got something there Mr. Cartwright.” Mr. Liam said.
“Adam, please call me Adam.”
“If you call me Tom.”
“Tom I have a little dilemma myself. You see my wife and I want to have
a tub under the stars, but for the logistics of it, I can’t seem to make
it work. Nobody wants to haul hot water outside to a large tub.
“Where is this piece you are building on. Are you available to a possible
tap into a hot spring?”
“Well yes, if you sat in that you would pare boil at times.
I suppose you are building a well? Then you can also tap and pipe in cold
water. It can be done, I done it myself on a few homes for some prominent
people. Let me see your sketches.”
The two men built a friendship as well that day.
)))))))))))))))
Meag was pouring herself in her work. She didn’t sleep well, so working long hours wasn’t a problem. She didn’t eat large meals. A knock on the door startled her. Realizing she was very much a mess, she timidly went to the door. “Yes, who is it?”
“Meag this is Catherine Brown, it’s Wednesday darling we have a lunch date.”
Meag opened the door. “Oh Catherine I am sorry, I will be ready in a minute
please come in.”
“Darling are you feeling alright?” Catherine said.
“I am fine, just got caught up with my work, nothing unusual. I just don’t sleep well without Adam. I am not eating too well lately.” Meag said changing her clothes.
“You need a good meal, a real big steak and a glass of red wine. Get your blood moving.”
“Food sounds real good right now. I will be ready in a minute.”
The two women walked to the restaurant down the street. Meag introduced Catherine to the owners. They had a warm meal. Meag ate like she was starving. They even had chocolate cake for desert.
“Thank you Catherine for taking me for lunch. I needed it. How about some shopping and some conversation?” Meag said excited to be out in the fresh air again.
“I would love that. There is something I wanted to discuss with you.” Catherine said.
“I see there is an attraction between you and my father-in-law. How long
have you known Ben?” Meag said.
Catherine seemed a little unsure about what to say. “You see when Ben and
I first met me I was married to my husband John. He was an abusive man,
his mother ruled over him like the queen of England. He did everything she
said. When I did not produce an heir for him, she had him annul our marriage
with his church. I was married to him for 6 years. Well I went back to my
maiden name and my brother, father and I started our ranch. They died in
a fire three years ago.
“Oh I am sorry.” Meag said holding her hand.
“Well now I want to sell this ranch. I have a good offer, I will very well off. Seeing Ben again stirred some feelings I had for that man for some time. We never could connect, the attraction is there and after the other day, um well I am sure we should see where this leads.”
“I agree. How about you travel with me when I leave?”
“I think that would be grand.”
“Now tell me about the other day.” Meag said with a big smile.
After three long weeks of toiling and long nights, Meag sighed as she turned
over her last page of her manuscript. A tear escaped her not out of sadness
but out of happiness. She was going home.
It was dusk and she walked the beach as she traditionally did. She felt
closer to her father here.
She also remembered felt Adam next to her on this beach. He was a good listener,
she poured her life story to him and his to her. She learned about his family,
his loss of the women in his life. She would always be there for him, this
she knew to her soul.
When she returned to the house, she was thrilled to see Catherine there.
“Catherine good timing, I finished it today, I’m going home.”
“Oh Meag that is so great. Calls for a celebration. Let’s go send some telegrams
and have a celebration dinner.”
“I’ll go change. The two women planned their trip back to Virginia City.
“Pa, I am going to town this morning you need anything?” Adam said.
“No son, I won’t need anything tomorrow either. You been going to town everyday
this week. You are worse than an expectant father son, relax. Meag will
send you word the minute she finishes that book and packs for home.”
“Sorry Pa, but I just want to check the mail and the telegram office. I
really need to do this.”
“Go ahead son, ask Hop Sing if he needs anything. Take Joe with you. He
needs a haircut before school starts and some new pants.” Ben said slapping
Adam on the back..
“Yes sir.” Adam said quickly leaving the table.
Adam told Joe about him having to get a haircut.
“Aww Adam that barber always scalps me. Tell him this time would ya?” Joe
said, not realizing he always said the same thing.
“Alright Joe I will tell him to not lower your ears.” Adam said rubbing
his curls.
“Thanks Adam.
“Let’s go check the mail Joe, then we will drop off Hop Sings list at the
general store. We will save the haircut for last.” Adam said.
“Hey there’s Mitch, can I go see what he’s doing? I haven’t seen my friends
in a while.” Joe said hopefully.
“Alright, meet me here in about an hour. Don’t make me go looking for you.”
Adam warned.
“Sure, I meet ya here.” Joe said running off to see his friends.
Adam dropped off his list with Mr. Anderson. “Hello Adam. Seems I see you
almost everyday this week. Any word yet?”
“I am going to check the mail and telegraph office now. I hope it is soon.
I am afraid I am driving my father a little crazy right now.” Adam said.
Mr. Anderson chuckled. “Well, it’s understandable. I can’t wait to meet
her, your Pa says she is a real beauty and a real pistol.”
“She is something alright. Well I will be back for the supplies.” Adam said
heading to the telegraph office.
“Adam Cartwright, well I was just about to go send word you got a telegram,
in fact there are two telegrams, one for you and one for your Pa.” Tom said
seeing he just gave Adam the best news in a long time.
“Thanks Tom, Adam eagerly opened the telegram.

“Tom she’s coming home. This is great news. I got to go. I will give this
other telegram to Pa.”
Adam exclaimed. He was lighter than air.
“Adam I got the mail, there’s a letter here for Meag. It’s all the way
from Lindsborg, Kansas.”
Joe said.
“Must be her aunts. She will be glad to get this. She is coming home Joe,
on the 22nd.”
“Thank goodness, you are a bear to live with lately.” Joe said teasing.
“Let’s get your haircut. Maybe I will get one too since my lady is coming
home. Can’t have her see me looking like a River Boat Gambler or something.”
Adam said cheerfully.
Arriving back at home Adam handed his father his telegram. He took it and
put it in his vest pocket.
“Pa ain’t ya gonna at least read it?” Joe said.
“Aren’t you going to read it.” Ben corrected.
“It’s your telegram, I will read if you want me too.” Joe said
“Boy I will be so glad to get you back in school.” Ben said heading for
his room upstairs.
“Why wouldn’t he read it Adam?”
Joe this telegram could be from Miss Brown, the lady Hoss and I told you
about. Maybe it is personal.” Adam said giving him a shove.
“Personal, what is so personal about selling bulls?” Joe said confused.
“Let’s take a walk Joe.” Adam said taking his little brother out to the
corrals.
Ben went to the privacy of his room. Taking out the telegram he read it to himself.

Ben smile went from ear to ear. She was coming to him.
“Adam, I don’t understand it.” Joe said shaking his head.
“Pa wants a lady to come and visit. We will have to be on best manners all
that time. I don’t like it, don’t like it at all. Would if she don’t like
it here, it is a ranch she maybe used to something like fancy stuff.” Joe
said pouting.
“Joe she ran a ranch, all by herself just some hands to help her. Blue Boy
is from her ranch remember.” Adam said trying to reason with his 13 year
old brother.
“That’s not easy being a girl and all.” Joe said astounded.
“It’s not easy for anyone. I just want you to know, she and Pa are good
friends. And Pa expects you to be on your best manners no matter what. But
she is a real good woman Joe, she will be good for Pa. He has been very
lonely these past years. It doesn’t mean he loves Ma less, it just means
he has a big heart and if he wants to find out where this leads, we should
not be in his way. That’s all I am saying. If you want to talk about it
any time, come see me or Pa. Ok Joe?”
“Sure Adam. I want to go take Cochise out, he is ready Adam.”
“I will have to go with you for the first few times Joe, Pa’s orders.” Adam said.
“Can we go now? I want to ride.” Joe said feeling he wanted to get away for awhile.
“Sure, let me tell Pa.” Adam said understanding.
The two rode near the lake. When in the area they always stopped at Marie’s grave site. Joe especially wanted to be near his mother today. “Adam I like the flowers you planted here, they are real pretty, she liked flowers didn’t she Adam?” Joe said taking off his hat.
“Yes she always had a vase of flowers in the house. Even in winter she managed to find some flower to put in her vase. I took these from the outside of Hop Sing’s garden and brought them here.”
“Joe what is on your mind, let’s talk about it.” Adam said sitting near him.
“Will Pa forget about Mama if he likes this Catherine lady?” Joe said not looking at his big brother.
“No Joe of course not. He never forgets my mother, or Hoss’ ma Inger. Your
mother, he could never forget, she is in you Joe. Look at me Joe, if Pa
would lock his heart away after my mother died, you and Hoss wouldn’t be
here right now. He would be in Boston being miserable in some chandler shop
alone and miserable. Pa deserves to be happy don’t he?”
“Well yeah, sure Adam. Pa is the best. But..”
“When I was unsure if I should ask Meag to marry me, Pa sensed that. He took me out to the barn and talked to me. He said he would rather send her away then see her hurt by my rejection of her because I was afraid of taking a chance on loving her. I was so afraid of what ‘might’ be that I forgot to see what is right in front of me.” Adam said squeezing Joe’s shoulder.
“If Catherine makes Pa happy so be it. They should find out where this may lead. If it leads to a marriage, we should rejoice in the fact Pa has found happiness. If it doesn’t work out at least he and Catherine will know for sure. And you, Hoss, Meag and I will be there for him to lean upon. Just like he is always there for us.” Adam said softly.
“Adam what is she like? Does Meag like her?” Joe asked.
“They become close friends. She is a real nice lady, keeps Pa on his toes she does.” Adam said with a grin.
“I think I like her already Adam, especially if Meag likes her.” Joe said with a slight grin.
“That’s right, we better get back. Let’s get going. Joe you did real well with Cochise today, I will tell Pa I think you are ready to take him out on your own.”Adam said swinging up on his saddle.
“Thanks Adam.” Joe said gratefully.
That night Adam and Ben had a hard time sleeping. “Good morning son, you couldn’t sleep either?” Ben said still putting on his boots. “I don’t think I slept one hour Pa. Too anxious I guess. How about you?” Adam said.
“Not a wink. We are vexed the both of us.” Ben said winking at Adam.
“Well I am going to get an early start on the barn chores. Tell my lazy brothers to meet me out there when they grace us with their presence.” Adam said with a smirk.
“Son, you realize what time it is don’t you?” Ben said.
“Near morning, that’s all I know.” Adam said.
“Barely, it’s not even 4 a.m. yet. So I suggest you have some more coffee.” Ben said.
“Sounds like the ticket Pa, more coffee.”
As the four Cartwrights rode into town in style. Ben had the surrey waxed
and polished for the ladies, and a separate buckboard for their luggage.
Joe and Hoss wanted to ride their horses but Pa insisted they drive the
buck board as he and Adam drove the surrey.
The stage was late making Adam all the more unbearable. “Maybe it hit a rut or lost a wheel. I should ride out and check Pa.”
“Adam it is only 20 minutes late, please relax.” Ben said rolling his eyes.
“Sorry Pa. I am just ....here it comes...thank goodness.” Adam said with a big sigh.
“Yes thank goodness.” Ben said shaking his head.
“Adam!!” Meag yelled. She let him help her down only to be swept off her feet in a long kiss as he held her like a tiny doll in his arms.
“Meag I can’t believe I am finally holding you. How was your trip sweetheart?” Adam said kissing her again.
“Adam, people in town, remember we are not alone, remember little brothers...ummm I missed you so much.” Meag said giving in to his kisses.
“Adam you have time for that later.” Pa said nudging him.
“Sorry Pa.” Adam said but not letting her go.
“Catherine, so glad you made the trip out here.” Ben said taking her hand.
“So am I Benjamin, so am I. I think those bags up there are mine, Hoss would you mind?”
“Not at all ma’am, not at all.” Hoss said smiling.
“Catherine this is my son Joseph, I don’t think you met him.” Ben said bringing Joe forward from his stance behind him.
Joe handed her a bouquet of wildflowers wrapped in a blue ribbon. “These are for you ma’am, I picked them myself.
“These are beautiful, you must show me where such flowers like these bloom, I love flowers.” Catherine said truly touched at his thoughtfulness.
“I heard so much about you Joseph. I think you and I have something in common.” Catherine said.
“What is that ma’am?” Joe said politely.
“We both ride paint horses. My horse is named Wind Dancer, he will be coming
out next week, maybe we can ride to the lake on our paint horses if your
Pa says its alright.” Catherine said.
“Sure if Pa says ok, right Pa.” Joe said hopefully.
“I think that would be alright Joseph.”
Meag went up to Joe and put him in a full hug. “Joe I missed my angel so much. Did you get my packages sweetheart?” Meag said looking slightly down at him.
“Oh Meag the fly rod set I love it, I really do!! And the jacket, it’s real deerskin isn’t it?” Joe said hugging her back. “These are for you.” Joe said handing her a second bouquet of wildflowers.
“Oh thank you Angel, yes real deerskin, it was from an artist friend I know.” Meag said kissing the top of his head.
I have more presents but that will wait until tonight. Let’s get home I want to change out of this stuffy dress.” Meag said kissing Ben and Hoss hello.
Ben drove the surrey with Catherine next to him. Adam and Meag behind them whispering and talking to one another stealing kisses. Joe and Hoss took the luggage in the buckboard behind them.
“We have a lot to talk about Meag.” Adam said trying to will his body from his instant reaction to seeing her.
“Talk, can’t we talk later?” She teased.
“Yes and stop doing that” he whispered in her ear.
“What?” Meag said with innocense.
“Playing with my foot with your foot. I am going crazy.” Adam said breaking into a sweat.
“Sorry. How’s the weather been, you think it will be a cold winter.”
“Meag what are you doing?” Adam said.
“Trying to get you home with some dignity.” Meag said with a chuckle.
They made it home to the ranch. Catherine was taken aback at the size of
the house. “Oh Ben you have a wonderful home. I must speak to your architect
I love this design.”
“You can speak to him anytime he is right behind you, my son designed this
house. I am very proud of him.”
“Adam you have a gift, a real gift.” Catherine said getting down from the
surrey.
“He is designing our home, I can’t wait for the plans to be final.” Meag said.
“Ben, Catherine please excuse me, I want to change out of this suit.” Meag
said going upstairs.
“I think I will change too Pa, Catherine please excuse me.” Adam said following
his wife upstairs.
“They are a pair of bad actors.” Ben said chuckling.
“Joe and Hoss, could you please start your barn chores after you changed.” Ben instructed.
“Yes Pa.” Hoss and Joe said together. They ran upstairs to change.
“Meag and Adam are head over heals in love, I think it is wonderful. Meag missed him terribly, to the point of losing some substantial weight. Or have you not noticed Benjamin?” Catherine said.
“How about we take a walk and leave the love birds alone for awhile. Ben said taking Catherine’s arm.
Upstairs Adam had no sooner closed and locked the door he was undoing Meag’s
clothes.
As he removed a layer of clothing he stopped.
“Meag you lost so much weight, are you alright?” Adam said worriedly.
“I guess I did. We don’t have a lot of time mister. So why don’t you enjoy the body I do have.”
Adam put her on his lap sitting on the bed. “A person only loses that much weight for few reasons. One he or she doesn’t take nourishment; Two he or she works long hours without taking even the time to take nourishment or Three she has been ill and did not tell me.
“One and Two, I haven’t been ill. I usually lose weight when working on
a book, this time a little more than I would want. I have a big appetite
right now, but not for food. Are you going to talk all night or we going
to ...”
Adam cut her off with a long kiss as his hands finished undressing her.
That night Hop Sing made a most special supper of roast beef, potatoes,
carrots, baked bread, gravy, string beans, bake beans and cherry cobbler
for dessert.
“Meag you eat up, I don’t like you so thin young lady.” Ben said pointing
his fork at her.
“I will Pa, everything looks wonderful. Meag said taking some potatoes
rolling her eyes.
I guess I didn’t take in regular meals when I was working. The minute I
smelled Hop Sing’s food I was hungry beyond belief. Don’t worry I will fat
before you know it.” Meag said winking at Catherine.
“Oh Meag, a letter came for you, all the way from Kansas.” Ben said handing
her an envelope.
Meag quickly read the letter. “It’s from my aunts, Sally and Susan. They are coming out for a visit. Should be here late September. Are you ready for that Adam? Meag said with a chuckle.
“I can’t wait. We will make sure they are comfortable and well taken care of.” Adam said looking at Meag with a curious eye.
“I must warn you. You try to treat them like a couple of old ladies you might find yourself over their knee Adam Cartwright.” Meag said with a chuckle.
“I meant only to be respectful Meag. I really can’t wait to meet them.” He said pulling her onto his lap.
“Adam did you show Meag your plans on the house yet?” Ben asked.
“No sir we uh haven’t had time for that yet.” Adam said looking a little uncomfortable.
“Hadn’t had time, big brother you had all afternoon...oh well maybe you didn’t. Hoss said embarrassed.
“I would love to see your plans too.” Catherine said.
“I’ll go get them while we take our coffee and cobbler in the next room. Meag and Catherine sat on the settee. Joe and Hoss started a game of checkers.
The plans were laid out. Adam, Ben, Catherine and Meag gathered closely.
“Here is your studio, it will as big as our master bedroom on the bottom
far end of the house. My den is here and the kitchen area here. I made friends
with another architect, Thomas Liam, on the stage ride back from San Francisco.
I want you to meet him. He had an idea for your tub under the stars.”
“A bathtub under the stars, geez Adam everybody gonna see you.” Joe piped up.
“It will be surrounded by a gazebo.” It’s not a bathhouse, it’s just for us to relax in. The hot water will come from here, see this hot spring, another source is this cold water being tapped from here.” Adam said proudly.
“I knew I married a genius. Our tub under the stars. I love it Adam.”
“Well there is one thing I need to know Meag, how many bedrooms did you
want in this house?”
Adam said pouring over the plans with his mind.
Besides our room, the den and the studio, I think I would want ten more bedrooms. Two downstairs, a nursery connecting with ours, and seven others.” Meag said matter of fact.
“WHAT?” That seems excessive darling.” Adam said looking at her curiously.
“Not really Adam. Twins run on my side of the family. And if we can’t fill those rooms with our own children, I think we can adopt some children who may need to be loved.” Meag said.
“But Meag, ten?”
“Adam, ten bedrooms, doesn’t mean only 10 children, some can share a room. Right?”
“Pa, I hope you are ready to be bouncing a lot of grandchildren on your knee.” Adam said sweeping Meag off her feet.
“I only have two knees Meag Cartwright.” Ben said.
“Guess you may need some help then. Catherine has two, so that’s four right there.” Meag said not looking at her father-in-law. Catherine blushed slightly.
“Don’t forget me and Hoss, that’s eight. With you and Adam, we got it covered.” Joe said.
“See I knew your schooling would pay off Joe,” Adam said with a smirk.
“I hope it is soon, it is something I am looking forward to.” Ben said with a grin.
“I’m afraid you may have to wait until at least May.” Meag said looking at Adam for his reaction.
“Meag are you, are we...” Adam said picking her up.
“Yes, WE are. So get knocking on that house.” Meag said tearfully.
“I will have it done my love, our baby will sleep in his room in May.” Adam said kissing her soundly.
The whole family embraced. Adam didn’t let Meag off his lap.
“Meag, why don’t you show Pa your book the publisher advanced you.” Adam said squeezing her waist.
“Do you think it is the right time Adam?” Meag said.
“Yes I think it is the perfect time darling.” Adam said kissing her forehead.
As Meag handed the book to Ben, she opened it to the page which held a satin ribbon. Ben held the book with tender care as he read the dedication.
My Dedication
Most authors, including myself, dedicate their books to family, friends
and love ones.
I dedicate this book to three wonderful women I have never met. But without them my life would have taken a different turn.
To Elizabeth Stoddard Cartwright,
A young sea captain’s daughter who passed her spirit and thirst of knowledge
to her son Adam, my husband, whom I adore and love with all my heart and
soul.
May our children inherit your wonder of the world and quest for life.
To Inger Borgstrom Cartwright,
A Swedish immigrant to this land known of her generous and giving heart.
Her gentile ways and care of all creatures lives on within your son, Eric.
To Marie D’Marigny Cartwright,
A most beautiful and giving person, with the fires of passion and spirit
of an angel, you live on in your son, Joseph.
And
To the man who has endured their passing and loved them with an open and full heart, I also dedicate this book. Without your guidance and love I would could not be a part of this legacy of strength and love.
