Author, Author Part 4
“You are joking right Meag?” Adam asked taking the telegram from her.
“No, they are coming on tomorrow’s stage. Hoss just brought the mail from town and a telegram arrived from my two Aunts. They will be arriving tomorrow afternoon. We have no time to debate this, they are coming and that is all there is to it. We got to get the place ready, food prepared and you will have to tell Hop Sing...”Meag said not looking directly at Adam.
“Oh no you don’t, you will tell Hop Sing” Adam said with a smirk.
“Adam come on, he would take it better from you or Pa.” Meag pleaded, even tried batting her eyes. Adam only chuckled.
“No you little coward, they are your Aunts. You tell him they are coming.” Adam said tapping her nose.
“Oh alright. But you stay close.” Meag said walking apprehensively toward the kitchen.
Hop Sing was busy rolling out dough for his pot pies. He caught Meag’s
look out of the corner of his eye.
“You have news for Hop Sing. Out with it before you choke on own tongue.”
Hop Sing said not looking up.
“Got a telegram today Hop Sing. Good news, my Aunts are coming. They should be here by dinner tomorrow night.” Meag said quickly stepping a little closer to the archway where Adam was hidding his grin.
Stopping his rolling of dough for a moment, Hop Sing turned to Meag.
“Aunts arrive like two typhoons, not much warning. I hope honorable Aunts
excuse messy house.” Hop Sing said angrily.
“Oh Hop Sing, this house is never dirty thanks to you. We will all pitch in tomorrow morning. Don’t you worry.” Meag said feigning a smile.
“You help Hop Sing by staying OUT of kitchen. Hop Sing want whole house spotless, take whole family to help.” Hop Sing said crossing his arms over his chest.
“Yes Hop Sing, the whole family will help.” Meag said trying to placate her good friend.
Adam heard the whole exchange. He chuckled as Meag smoothed the ever ruffled feathers of the little Chinaman.
“The whole family Meag?” Adam said with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes, that includes Little Joe and Hoss.” Meag said anticipating Adam’s source of amusement.
“I am sure your ‘Angel” as you refer to Little Joe, will be a great help,
when he is not sulking of course, being forced to sweep, mop or whatever
you have in mind.”
“I have plans for you too, smart ass.” Meag whispered in his ear.
Ben and Catherine returned from a ride to the Lake. Catherine had a big
smile as Ben helped her down. “It was a glorious ride Meag, we watched the
sunset from Crescent Ridge. The leaves are starting to turn their golden
colors.”
“I see you turning a glorious color as well.” Meag said lowly noting Catherine’s
pink glow. Ben and Catherine have yet to be betrothed. Meag was wondering
what is taking her father-in-law so long to pop that question.
“Hush you naughty girl. You mind your own bees-wax.” Catherine said with
a chuckle.
“Ok, ok, but if you need me to give Pa a push in that direction, I would
gladly...”
“What are you two whispering about Meag Cartwright?” Ben said knowing his daughter in law was up to her usual mischief.
“Oh nothing Pa, Catherine was just telling me how romantic the sunset was; glorious with its red glows and pink hues.”Meag said innocently enjoying the uncomfortable look on her father-in-laws face.
“I would like to make something of yours glow red young lady.” Ben said lowly but Adam heard him and started to chuckle.
“What was that Pa?” Meag asked batting her eyes. She heard him too.
“I said, yes it was something to see with the colors glowing.” Ben lied.
“Oh that is what I thought you said.” Meag said walking to the settee winking at Adam.
Adam cleared his throat.
“Oh Pa, Meag got a telegram today, her two Aunts are arriving tomorrow afternoon.
Hop Sing is wanting the whole family to help with the house.” Adam said.
“That is wonderful, Meag’s family coming for a visit. I think we all should pitch in. But Meag, you stay away from the kitchen, in fact I would not want you to over due in your condition. I am sure Hop Sing can find something useful for you to do, but nothing strenuous.” Ben said.
“Don’t worry about that, I will see to it.” Adam said.
“Hey, I am right here. You two need to relax. I am fine, healthy and being four months pregnant, well I am barely showing a bump. When I am waddling down the halls then you can act like this, not now.”
Hoss and Little Joe walked in from doing their barn chores. “Boys, we are having guests arrive tomorrow afternoon, Meag’s Aunts are coming on the afternoon stage. We will all pitch in with whatever Hop Sing needs done. Is that clear?”
“Aww Pa. Mitch and I wanted to try that new fishing hole he found.” Joe
whined.
Hoss caught the look his father briefly took toward his youngest.
“Be glad to help Pa.” Hoss said nudging Joe in the ribs.
“Sure Pa, we will be glad to help out.” Joe said.
“Thank you boys, I will let Hop Sing assign your chores. Now you two get
washed up for supper.”
((((((((((()))))))))))))))))
The next morning everyone was up early to start working on the house. Catherine
and Hop Sing prepared food, baked bread and pies for the meals for the next
few days. Meag was ordered to sit and polish the silver.
Adam and Hoss did the upstairs rooms and windows. Ben had the task of airing
out the mattresses and beating the rugs. The whole house was in an uproar.
Joe was assigned the polishing of the woodwork, especially the banisters.
“Meag your Aunts don’t really care if the banisters are polished do they?”
Joe said feigning a sore back he didn’t have.
“Well Angel I haven’t seen my Aunts in almost 8 years. But they may use
those banisters to slide down to greet the day. They were quite rambunctious.”
Meag said winking at Adam.
“She’s joshing right Adam?” Joe said looking at unsure.
“Well Joe, they did travel in a Wild West Show, so if I were you, I would
get them shiny and slick.”
Before leaving for town, they all went upstairs to change clothes. Meag
looked at her choices and was disheartened to find her little ‘bump’ was
evident in anything she wore.
“Meag, you look wonderful, why are you so worried about having the baby
showing. You are a tiny lady, I am sure you will never get as big as Mrs.
Homer.” Adam said.
“Oh Adam Mrs. Homer had 12 children. She weighs 200 lbs without being with
child.” Meag said.
Darling, don’t you know I find you so alluring right now I want to take all those layers off and make mad passionate love to you.”Adam said stepping closer.
“Adam I wish we had the time. I crave your touch as much as Hop Sings molasses cookies right now and that’s saying something.” Meag said hardly able to contain her chuckle.
“As much as that, umm I am speechless my love.” Adam said with a roll of the eyes.
Meag stepped forward and kissed him with passion savoring his warm lips
against hers. His response was demanding as he pulled her into his embrace
parting her lips with his tongue tasting the sweetness. She softly moaned
as his hands moved to her bottom to caress her.
“I need you Adam, please, darling.”
Adam locked the door. “We have to make this quick darling.” Adam said huskily
removing his britches.
“Don’t waste time talking, get to it cowboy.” Meag said with a naughty glint
to her eye.
“You are a handful my wife, but a delightful one.”
The stage was not expected for another hour. Joe had asked if could get
some candy while he waited, Ben sent him along with Hoss to the general
store. “Pa, Catherine and I are going to the hotel and have some lemonade,
it’s hot and I need to sit down for awhile.” Meag said. She was feeling
nauseous but didn’t want to worry anyone. It was just a normal occurrence
with expecting. The ride to town plus the heat it was a little much for
Meag.
“Of course darling, you two go ahead. Are you alright?” Ben asked not liking
the pale look to Meag’s complexion.
“I am fine, a little hot under the collar with this stuffy dress. I will
be fine.” Meag said taking Catherine with her to the hotel.
“Are you really alright because you don’t look alright Meag.” Catherine
said as they drew near the hotel.
“I am sick as a dog, but don’t tell them that. I will never be allowed to
go to town again until this babe is born. I am just going to ....oh god.”..Meag
went to the side of the building and thrown up.
“Sweetheart, please tell me you are alright.” Catherine said.
“I feel better now that is over with. Let’s go have a cool drink.” Meag
said.
Sitting at the International Hotel’s dining room, Meag was feeling better. The manager gave her shaved ice with lemon topping. Meag could have kissed him for it. Meag had a strong craving for lemons. Lemons and her husband’s attentions.
“Catherine, are you and Ben ...uh...planning anything in the near future?”Meag said with a smile.
“Not that I know of...he seems indecisive Meag. I am giving him a lot of space, time to think about it. I know what I want. I want him, as my husband. I love him more than life itself. But I want him to come to me freely and without doubt or reservation.”
“I can understand that Cat, he does love you. We all know he does. And
we all know how you feel about Pa. I don’t think he is indecisive, he lost
three wives, to think he would fall in love again;
he must be scared to death to give his heart. But you know Catherine he
can’t stop what is meant to be, I think he needs a gentle push in that direction.”
Meag said patting her friend’s hand.
Ben and Adam walked into the hotel dining room. “Now what are you two ladies
talking about?” Ben asked giving Meag a weary look. She had a funny look
on her face.
“Just girl talk Pa.” Meag said with a smile.
“Well girls it seems the stage is arriving.” Ben said taking Catherine by
the hand.
Adam gave Meag a knowing smile and whispered in her ear. “Girl talk my ass.”
By the way Meag described her Aunts, they were expecting a couple of buckskin
clad, rifle toting women to step off the stage. Instead two ladies dressed
in expensive dress and hats greeted them.
“Aunt Sue, Aunt Sally!” Meag said with exuberance. The three women hugged.
“Look at her, she is just perfectly beautiful, all grown up.” Sue said giving
Meag another hug.
“Aunties, this is my husband, Adam Cartwright, my father-in-law Benjamin
and our friend and guest, Catherine Brown. Everyone, my Aunts, Mrs. Sue
Hunt and Mrs. Sally Scottsman.”
“Nice to meet Meag’s new family. My, you did marry a handsome man there
‘Moon.’
Meag immediately blushed a pink. She had forgotten her childhood nick name
given by her Aunts.
Adam hid his grin, he would get to the bottom of that nick name later.
“Hoss, Joe, my Aunts, Sue and Sally.” Meag quickly interjected.
“How-do ladies. Welcome to the Ponderosa.” Hoss said taking off his hat.
“Hope you enjoy your stay. Any of you fish like Meag?” Joseph asked.
“Aunt Sue does, she taught me along with my father.” Meag said.
“Yes my sister likes to fish, I like to bake now days.” Sally said.
“Well ladies I suggest we get to the ranch. Meag you sit with your aunts while I fetch the luggage.
“I could do with a lemonade, or something cool. The last part of this stage
ride was dusty and hot.
We asked the driver if we could sit up top, he refused to let us.” Sue said.
“You would head to toe dust Auntie if you did. Let’s get you something
cool. You can wash up there also. Meag took their arms in hers walking to
the hotel. “Honey you got one good looking husband, you win him in a raffle
or something.” Sue said winking at her.
Please don’t tell him that, he knows he is good looking and so do most the
ladies in town, but he chose me and we love each other.
That night at the dinner table, Adam was learning a lot about his wife.
Whether she liked it or not.
“Oh she used to give her father a run for his money. Did you ever tell them
about the ‘Grand Performance’ you gave the neighborhood kids when your father
left you with us that summer?”
Aunt Sue said chuckling into her napkin.
“No Aunt Sue I don’t think they would be interested...” Meag said blushing.
“Nonsense Meag, we love a good story around here.” Adam said with a smirk
at his wife’s discomfort.
Adam was quickly rewarded with a kick to his ankle.
“Her father was never keen on the idea of leaving Meag with us. But that
summer he had little choice. She spent the summer riding, roping and learned
a few tricks we taught her.
“On the very day her father was due to return, what does this little imp
do? Well, Sal and I went to the train station to wait for her father to
arrive. She had feigned a headache and stayed behind with the nanny we hired
that summer.
She sneaks my costume, which was a might too big for her I might add, and
my six shooter then heads to the edge of town. A crowd of children waited
for her there. She had promised a private wild west show of her own. The
horse she took with her was a retired trick pony we had, he was a cantankerous
animal.
With a whoop and a holler, she was off at a gallop. She stood on the saddle,
reins in hand popping off shots with the six shooter. Well, she did what
we call a side swing, that is she dropped down swung off the saddle vaulting
back up only when she hit the ground to vault back up, she forgot something”
Meag blushed a deep red and rolled her eyes.
“What did she forget?” Hoss asked.
“Her bloomers, they fell right off, as I said that costume was too big for
her.”
The whole street got a good look at her bare backside and the ladies of
the town were all waiting at the house when we returned from the train station.
That was the first time her father ever took her to the woodshed. Poor Meag
was unable to sit for some time to come.”
The table all burst out laughing.
“If that were my daughter, she still would be remembering that particular
day every time she sat down.” Ben said looking directly in Meag’s direction.
“I believe you Pa.” Meag said blushing.
That night Meag was brushing her hair. In the mirror she noticed her husband
smirking at her as he laid on the bed with his arms crossed behind his head.
Without turning around she asked, “What is it?”
“Oh well, I am a little disappointed in you.”
“You’re disappointed, why?”
“Because I thought I was the only one to see your bare backside, now I learn
a whole town had that pleasure.”
“Adam I was twelve years old for corns sake.” she said rolling her eyes.
“I think I would like to see that bare backside if you don’t mind.”
“I do mind. You are laying there smiling like a ...Adam what are you doing...stop
right there...don’t get up....don’t take my nightgown off....stop.
Adam had her in an embrace with night gown now on the floor. His mouth covering
hers, both his hands on her bare backside tenderly caressing her. Pulling
her ever closer to his arousal, she could not deny his or her need. “Insufferable
man.” Meag said as he lifted her off her feet and carried her to the bed.
(*********)
Ben sighed deeply in his empty bed. Lately, it was as if a hand shook him
every morning at three o’clock, he awoke, and as always his first thought
was that of Catherine. Catherine Brown had arrived with Meag from San Francisco
six weeks ago. She seemed to fit in well with the boisterous Cartwrights.
His concern how Joe would react to Catherine’s presence went unfounded.
Joe seemed to enjoy Catherine as much as anyone.
The last six weeks Ben and Catherine got to know one another quit well.
They were compatible in every sense of the word. There was a sense that
Catherine held back something from him that kept him up nights and woke
him at this ungodly hour.
Catherine’s room was downstairs. Good thing my lady, if any closer I might
not be able to stand this separation and visit you at three in the morning
and make love to you. Ben smiled at the thought. Every stolen kiss has sent
electric fire through him. He wanted more, so much more.
Why is your bed empty you dolt, she loves you, you love her.. Ben scolded
to himself.
He wanted Catherine to always be here. He spoke to Adam a few nights ago
when they were alone on the range. Ben smiled as he recalled the wisdom
of his oldest son.
“Pa, you are blessed to have found love again. Remember what you told me when I was afraid to ask Meag to marry? I give you the same advise. She is your match Pa. And if you don’t ask her you will regret it the rest of your life. Picture your life with and without her.” Adam said.
“Do me a favor son, do NOT tell Meag of our conversation.”Ben said feeling ill at ease.
“Oh I promise Pa, but if you can keep something from my little bloodhound let me know your secret.” They both laughed at the truth of that statement.
That night when all were in bed, Ben tossed some more, he thought he heard
a noise downstairs so he got up donned on his robe and slippers to investigate.
There sitting on the settee starring into the flames coming from the fireplace
was Catherine. She had bundled herself in a quilt with her feet tucked warmly
under. “Oh Ben did I wake you sweetheart?”
“In a way yes, you horn my dreams woman as well as my thoughts every waking minute.” Ben said as he sat next to her drawing her close for a hug. She laid her head on his shoulders.
“Funny you should say that Ben, that is what wakes me almost every night since we kissed the first time on the docks. You are in my dreams. I dream of your arms around me holding me close. When I wake, I uh well let’s just say I usually cannot drift off again.” Catherine said not looking into his piercing eyes.
“Catherine, since we are up, would you take a ride to see the sunrise with
me?” Ben said taking her hand up to his soft lips for a kiss.
Catherine shivered in delight.
“Yes, I will quickly dress and we will leave right away.” Catherine said.

Adam awoke before dawn. His wife was still cuddling next to him snug and warm. As he did every morning, Adam watched her sleep for awhile before he woke her in a most sensuous way. She was barely 4 months along in her pregnancy but these last few weeks she had a fierce craving for intimacy and of all things ‘lemons.’ Meag had cornered him at the most inappropriate times to almost beg him to satisfy her ‘craving’ of his lovemaking. Then she would ask for some sort of lemon treat. Last night it was lemonade, the night before lemon cookies. Adam scooted down the covers pulling her close kissing her awake.
“Ummm morning Dimples.” Meag said stretching like a cat.
“Morning my love. You feel alright this morning?” Adam asked softly caressing
her as he pulled her in a spoon position.
“I feel fine, even more than fine. “ She said pushing her bottom near his
swollen erection.
“I may always keep you pregnant if this is what I may expect; you are so
amorous.”
Adam said pulling placing Meag on her back moving on top of her. Spreading
her legs with one hand, the other hand was busy removing her nightgown.
“F-fine with me A-Adam.” Meag said raptured by his touch. Adam tossed her
nightgown on the floor making passion the days beginning.
((((((((((((((((((((0)))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Ben had stopped the buggy atop a ridge he knew very well. From it’s perch
high above the Lake, you could see for miles. As the sun rose over the peaks,
the sunlight played magic on the waters mystifying colors. Deep blues, greenish
hues, white caps rippling across the lake added shimmer of the emeralds
of the bay.
“It looks like liquid jewels Ben, so magnificent, so beautiful and peaceful.
Thank you darling.” Catherine said snuggling up to him for warmth.
Ben stepped from the buggy taking her arm. “Come with me Catherine.” Ben
said huskily.
Ben walked with her to the place he loved to rest and think as he did so
many times when his loneliness took him to a darkness he would not let his
family see.
Facing her as the sun rose behind them, he took her face in his hands bending
toward her small frame drawing her into a soft passionate kiss. His lips
parted gently, letting his tongue enter the sweetness of her mouth tasting
her. Her responsive moan flamed his passion even more. His body was quick
to react. Catherine stepped even closer to him. “I dreamed of this embrace,
I dream of your embrace every night Ben.” Catherine said in a sweet whisper.
“Catherine, I too feel you next to me at night, then I wake in the early
hours only to find you not next to me. I love you Catherine. Would you do
me the honor of being my wife.” Ben said looking deeply into her green eyes.
“Ben, there is nothing more I would want in this world than to be your wife,
to wake next to you every morning.”
Ben felt her pulling away. “But...”
“Ben my first marriage, my husband told me what a bad lover I was, he blamed me for our marriage failure. I think there is something wrong with me. I could never...achieve...well, you know what I am trying to say...I could never..you know, with my husband. I wouldn’t want to disappoint you in any way, especially intimately.” Catherine said turning her red face from his view.
“What we have together could never be disappointing my love.” Ben said
turning her around to face him and taking her mouth again bringing his hand
upwards toward her breasts.
Catherine could feel her desire rise like the very peaks that surrounded
them. “Please show me Ben, this very morning, I want you.” Catherine said
surrendering to his embrace.
“Are you sure my love?” Ben said nuzzling her even closer.
“Yes.” She whispered in his ear.
Ben made a nice soft bed from the quilts in the buggy and the forest floor.
He gently laid her down on the makeshift bed with great care. The very honey
taste of her mouth and feel of her silky skin against his inflamed him.
Taking her one then the other breast into his mouth, suckling and flicking
the tender buds with his tongue. Arching her back giving him full access
to her, Ben moved his hot kisses trailing downward. Stopping at the navel,
he slid a finger inside her liquid heat. Catherine cried out as the sensations
he evoked ebbed like a warm tide over and over. He gently spread her legs
moving his mouth to her velvet heat.
“Ben...I never...
Ben took his mouth placing hot kisses then delved his tongue into her. She
held her breath as the sensation of hot ecstacy enveloped her whole being.
His desire to plunge into her with his engorged manhood had to be set aside.
He was determined to show her all the pleasures she could have if she was
to be his wife, she would have no doubts as far as their intimate life would
be like.
“Yes...don’t stop please...Catherine pleaded. Her heart was beating out
of her chest, her head moved from side to side. She thought her very body
was disintegrating into a thousand stars. She cried out, bucking, beneath
him. Ben lifted himself between her legs guiding himself into her throbbing
velvet liquid fire. He groaned as he slid his manhood slowly into her tightness.
“So good, darling you feel so good. His pounding heart matched hers. He
allowed her to adjust to his size before thrusting again. He delighted as
her responses were matching his.
Bending his head he took a breast with his mouth as he entered her. His
fought down the need to release just yet. Catherine moved with him with
the same urgency. She began to peak again beneath him. She writhed and bucked
underneath him pulling him even closer. Her cries of release were music
to him.
“My love”....Ben could barely speak as he climbed the stars with her. They
laid together still joined for sometime. When he looked at her, he was startled
to find tears falling from her eyes.
“Darling, did I hurt you, I am so sorry.” Ben said pulling her into his
arms.”
“Y-you didn’t hurt me, I mean I may remember you when I try to sit down
later, but Ben...it was so glorious. Tell me it could always be so glorious.”
Catherine said kissing his neck.
“You haven’t seen anything yet. I promise you, our life in all respects,
even when you are angry with me, our love, our live together will be glorious.”
“Ask me again Ben.”Catherine said as the glow of lust still lingered deep
in her eyes.
“Catherine Louise Brown, will you do me the great honor of becoming my wife.”
Ben said holding her close.
“Yes Ben, a thousand times yes, a thousand times yes.”
((((((((((((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Meag was setting the breakfast table. She went to wake Catherine, but she
wasn’t in her room.
“Adam, tell the boys breakfast is almost ready. Have you seen Catherine
or even Pa?”
“Pa and Catherine must have taken a ride in the buggy, it’s missing from
the barn.”
“How romantic, well we better make some plans.” Meag said smugly.
“Plans, aren’t you jumping the gun there gal?” Adam said
“No, I will bet you breakfast in bed that I am right. He must of proposed this morning I feel it in my heart. Besides, he is a Cartwright man, like my man I don’t think he could stand to wait any longer.” Meag said putting her hand lightly on his posterior.
“You have a bet, but I will want more than breakfast in bed.” He said winking at her.
“Gee I think I will take that bet, I figure it is a win, win.”
“Yes breakfast in bed and a foot massage, that sounds like heaven.” Adam teased.
“Foot massage!” Meag stomped her foot.
Ben and Catherine returned to the ranch. Catherine had the cuddle close
to Ben the whole way home, smiling from ear to ear. As they returned to
the house, breakfast was just getting on the table.
“Just in time Pa.” Hoss said.
“Morning son, is everyone up?” Ben said happily.
“Yessir, huh Pa, your uh shirt, it’s buttoned wrong there.” Hoss said pointing
to his missed button on his Pa’s shirt.
Catherine chuckled into her glove. She got down from the buggy. Excuse me
Ben I need to wash up before breakfast.”
Meag looked at Catherine as she rushed into her room to ‘freshen up.’ A
big smile crossed Meag’s face. “Somebody looks happy, in fact two somebody’s
look happy.” Meag said then winked at her husband.
Catherine came out of her room blushing like a rose in spring. “Umm breakfast
smells wonderful Hop Sing. She sat a little too quickly, she didn’t realize
how tender she was from this morning’s love making with Benjamin.
“Something wrong Missie Catherine?” Hop Sing said concerned.
“Just a little twinge in my back. I will be fine.” She said looking quickly
at Ben then to her plate.
Ben blushed at the same time. “Boys, Meag, Catherine and I have something
to tell you. I asked Catherine to be my wife and she said yes. We will be
married by the weeks end.”
Meag clapped her hands together. “I knew it, I knew it. Oh Pa, Catherine what a wonderful surprise. We have so much to do!!”
“Nothing too fancy Meag, I want to keep it simple.” Catherine said.
“Pa you and Catherine can use my beach house in San Francisco as your honeymoon suite if you like. Please say you will think about it.” Meag said kissing Ben then Catherine.
“That sounds wonderful darling, thank you.” Ben said.
The boys all gathered around Catherine and each kissed her genuinely welcoming
her to their family.
“Let’s all have breakfast and make some plans,” Ben said more happy than
hungry at the moment.
The aunts were only too happy to help with the wedding plans. Aunt Sal was quite the baker, so bragged aunt Sue.
Aunt Sue could make an occasion like this a very special one. She had a knack for it.
A trip to town was in order for the ladies. “Remember ladies, think simple
ceremony.” Ben said tapping Meag on the nose with his finger. Taking Catherine
in the privacy of his study he quickly kissed her thoroughly. “Ben, they
are waiting for me.” Catherine said almost breathless.
“Yes, let them wait a few more minutes.”
“Meag, I am surprised that man of yours let you go unescorted. And I am surprised Ben let Catherine go at all.” Aunt Sue said chuckling.
“Adam don’t exactly know, you see he was out doing the fences this morning, he can be too over bearing about me going into town. As for Catherine, I am surprised Ben stopped kissing her long enough to let her go to tell you the truth.” Meag said.
“Won’t Adam be angry sweetheart?” Aunt Sally asked.
“Yes, and he will get over it. Ben knows I carry my gun and I talked him into letting us go. I promised we would pick up Little Joe from school when it let out. I think I could talk him into selling half the ranch to the cows right now, he is on the clouds these last few days.” Meag said elbowing Catherine sitting next to her.
“Well your aunt and I are carrying our pistols too, we always do. So I
think we are pretty safe.”
Aunt Sue said.
They reached town and headed straight for the dressmaker. Mrs. Pinrod had
just put out the sign opening the shop when Meag, her aunts and Catherine
entered.
“Well Mrs. Cartwright, Mrs. Brown, nice to see you so soon.
“Mrs. Pinrod these are my aunts, Mrs. Susan Hunt and Mrs. Sally Scottsman.”
Meag said.
Well, so nice to meet you ladies. Now, what can I do for you or are you
just browsing?”
“We are on a mission my dear Mrs. Pinrod.” Aunt Sue said.
“Yes we are short on time, we have a week to make a wedding dress.” Aunt
Sally added.
Meag rolled her eyes. Mrs. Pinrod would spread the news of a wedding faster
than a wild fire.
Catherine blushed furiously. “Now, now who is it that is getting married?”
Mrs. Pinrod said.
Catherine and Meag glanced at each other. Oh well, it will get out anyway.
“Catherine and Ben are being married weekend next.”
Oh well I would say, that it is imperative that Ben and Catherine be married
in the church with all the trimmings. I could help with the reception and
the Ladies of the Virginia City Society Committee can help with the food.
This calls for an emergency meeting the committee. Good thing you came to
town early this week. Now let’s see now.
Mrs. Pinrod went on and on...the wedding was now out of control.
“Mrs. Pinrod please, Ben and I want a simple ceremony at the ranch. Then
we are leaving for San Francisco.
“Now, it will be elegant and simple, bad enough that the oldest son, denied
the whole town of witnessing their nuptials. Ben is a figure of respect
in this town. He was almost our governor some years back before he decided
not to run for election. The Ladies of Virginia City will make this easy
on all of you by splitting up the food, decorations and whatever you need.
Catherine did not want to make such a decision, “please help me Meag.”
“The dye is cast my dear. No stopping this freight train now.” Meag whispered.
)))))))))))))))
Adam was livid. “When did they leave Pa?”
“They left before lunch son. She will be fine, they will head back soon.
The ladies needed time to make plans for this weekend and you need to relax.
“You’re the one who is facing a wedding, are you not nervous Pa?”
“No son, I am excited this is happening. We will have a simple affair and then be off to San Francisco for a three weeks. Think you can handle your brothers for three weeks son?”
“No problem Pa. Good thing Meag’s aunts are here, it will be a family affair
afterall.”
Yes, she is glad they are here also.
The knock at the door was answered by Hop Sing. “I am looking for Catherine Brown, is she here?” The man said impatiently.
“Please to come in and wait. Ladies will return from town soon.”
Ben and Adam went into the great room. “Misler come to see Missie Catherine.”
Ben was shocked to see Catherine’s ex husband standing there in the flesh. He looked almost angry to be there.
“John, what brings you here?” Ben said astounded this man would darken his doorstep.
“My wife Cartwright, where is she?”
“Let us go in my study and talk John.” Ben said flatly.
The men went into the study and closed the door. Ben poured them both a
brandy.
“Ben, maybe I should enlighten you about a few things. My lawyers have informed me Catherine has liquidated her ranch and has transferred her accounts to Virginia City. She did this without my permission. What she has accumilated in our marriage is still half mine. I let her have her fun for awhile, but this she will be returning with me. I have reconsidered our separation and decided that she can come back and restart our marriage.”
“The divorce was final was it not?” Ben said trying to hold down his anger.
“I believe so, but Ben it was only a flight of fancy for her. Showing her independence and all that. I think when she sees me she will agree, we need to be together. I thank you for being such a good friend for her.
“I think there is something you ought to know. Catherine has consented to be my wife, we marry by weeks end.”
John Brown looked astounded. “I don’t think Catherine will continue with those plans Ben.”
Ben was about to say something else and throw than man from his home when the ladies returned chattering up a storm.
Catherine was smiling and chuckling at what Joe had said..then she saw him. She couldn’t believe her own eyes, her husband.
“Catherine my dear, you are looking well, very well indeed.” John said.
Glancing quickly at Ben, she could tell he was not pleased at this intrusion.
“I am very well, in fact Ben and I...”
“I heard my dear. But I must speak with you it is important. Alone please.”
Ben nodded to her and the two went into the study.
Meag walked to Adam who was looking as stern as his father. “That is her
first husband?” Meag asked.
“Yes, he must of run out of money.” Adam whispered. And I would like to
speak to you also Mrs. Cartwright, follow me into the kitchen.”
“Yes what is it Adam?”
Hugging her tightly his hands trailed down to her bottom. He pinched her.
“That was for leaving for town and not telling me.
“Ouch...don’t do that. Sorry sweetie but you were not here. Pa knew where
we were and besides between me, Aunt Sue and Aunt Sally we were pretty well
armed.”
“Don’t do it again.” Adam said giving her a hard kiss.
)))))))))))
“What are you doing here. Of all weeks...”
“You can’t marry that man Catherine. There is a stage leaving tomorrow for
San Francisco, we will be on it.”
“I am marrying Ben, and you can be on that stage and good ridden. We are divorced or did you fail to open that piece of mail also. Your mother could not wait to annal our union, I am grateful to her for doing so.”
“She wants an heir and since you are my wife, I say we appease her wishes before she succumbs.”
“Your mother is ill, I am sorry to hear it. But you are free to marry again, John. I am not your wife please get that through your head.”
“If you do not come back with me, I am afraid Ben will know more about my little wife that will convince him you are not the woman he thinks you are. I am sure of it darling.”
Catherine went pale. There is something she did not tell Ben, she wanted to tell him when the time seemed right, it never seemed right.
“I won’t be blackmailed into returning with you. I love Ben, we will be married. This can only be about money. I walked away from your mother’s money and built my own ranch to be successful despite your family. That was my ranch and when I sold it, the proceeds are also mine.”
Mother wants me to giver her an heir, I don’t have time to find a wife
these days. Once we give her a grandchild, she will release a trust fund
of unbelievable fortune. Come dear, let us start tonight.”
His boldness was repulsive. He reached for waist and pulled her against
him. She could feel his arousal through his clothing, she struggled to get
away from him.
Ben walked in catching John Brown holding onto her, his hands pressing her against him.
“Release her this moment or you won’t be able to use those hands the rest
of your miserable life.” Ben said in a flat dangerous tone.
John simply let go, Catherine moved away from him.
“Oh Ben, you might as well know, Catherine is coming back with me, isn’t that right darling?”
Ben shot her a hot glance. She was hurt that Ben would even believe this man. “No John of course not. You are still as twisted and disillusioned as always. Please show him out Benjamin.”
“Gladly.” Ben took him by the collar and shuffled him outside. “Virginia City is that way, do not come back here John, it is over.”
Catherine relaxed the breath she was holding. “What was that about Catherine?”
“He is out of money and demanded I go back with him as his wife. His mother is ill and would release a trust to him if he could prove an heir. I am sorry Ben, that he come here at all.”
“Not your doing darling. Is that all he wanted. He seemed pretty sure of himself.”
Now was the time to tell Ben, afterall they would be married in a matter of days. He would find out eventually. Now that John was in Virginia City, that was a certainty. Now was the time...
“Ben....I need your arms around me.”
Ben gladly obliged. He held her close for several moments.
“Catherine what is it? You are shaking.”
“I am afraid I have something to tell you. After I do, you will not want
me as your wife, you will toss me out.”
“I would never do such a thing. What is it Catherine, we can face anything together.”
“I..I lied to you Ben...”
His eyes turned dark. Taking her by the shoulders he looked into her eyes.
“About what...what did you lie about. You are divorced are you not.”
“Yes, the marriage was annulled years back. No Ben, it is about me. I am ....my age...it isn’t what you think it is.”
He pulled her close to him. Darling you look amazing, why do women fuss about their age so much.” Ben said relieved beyond belief.
“No Ben, I am not 43, as you believe, I am 33 years old.” Catherine said with tears rolling down her cheeks.
“I see, so my soon to be wife is not 10 years younger than I, she is 20
years younger.”
Ben said.
“Yes, I am sorry...my family arranged my marriage to John and to do so, they lied about my age, I was only 15, Ben. When we met the lie was already years old. John has threatened to tell you, I will not let him use that. I am sorry love.” Catherine said getting up and walking away.
“Where are you going Cat?” Ben asked.
“To pack, I won’t have the whole town talking about you.”
“I don’t care you are thirty-three years old Cat, what matters is that we love each other. Or is that a lie too, after what we shared the other day, I think you feel the same way I do.”
Stopping with her back turned, she turned slowly around. He gathered her up in his arms and locked the door to the study. There was no sound, no talking, just a locked door for a few hours.
Meag and Adam sat with her aunts until late. Adam was amused that his father doesn’t realize the whole town may be in on his wedding. Hop Sing was beside himself, he didn’t know how many to plan for, Meag assured him to plan on a lot of help from the Ladies of Virginia City to bring an exorbitant amount of food.
John Brown sat drinking at the Bucket of Blood. His tab was building and he was quickly running out of money. Having wired his mother telling her that he and Catherine reconciled and were expecting their first child, spread like wild fire throughout the town. If she would not come willing to him, he would shame her into it. He would take her by force and then Ben would not have anything to do with it.
“Drink to my unborn son! John Brown announced starting to feel the whisky.
“What’s your name mister?” Hank the bartender said.
“John Brown, Catherine Brown’s husband.
“You mean Catherine Brown, the lady who is about to hitch up with Mr. Cartwright?”
“She can’t do that now, can she, being my wife and all.”
The bar went silent, even the piano player stopped playing.
“What did Ben say when she left him?” Bell Benson.
“Well, he was ..understandably upset.” John lied.
“Mister, I haven’t seen Mrs. Brown back in town today, you sure you got the right woman.” The cowboy said.
“I think the boss would be interested in what this yahoo is saying.” Jake
said getting up heading back to the Ponderosa.
)))))))))))
The next morning, Ben had little sleep and less patience. “Joseph you get your self to school on time young man. No more notes from the teacher or you and I will have a long talk. Am I clear son?”
“Yes sir.” Joe said eating quickly.
“Hoss I want that corral done with. I went by there yesterday and it was
not even half done. What is the hold up on the corral?”
“The rails, I ran out of cut rails. I ordered more Pa.” Hoss said quickly.
“You should know exactly what you got to work with before you start a job,
I won’t tell you that again.”
Adam walked in from the outhouse. “Pa, good morning.”
“Morning son, where is my girl this morning?”
“Meag is not feeling too well, I told her to sleep in. Is Catherine around,
or did she go with Meag’s Aunts to town?”
“She and the aunts went to town, apparently they forgot about some detail
for this weekend.” Ben said feeling his temper lift a bit.
Jake came to the front door urgently banging on it. Adam opened the door.
“Jake, good morning, something wrong?”
“I need to speak to the boss Adam, it’s kinda personal.”
“Jake, what is it?” Ben said.
Jake took Ben outside so no other ears could overhear. Ben’s temper went
from hot to red hot.
“Adam, I am going to town. I would like you to come with me in case I need
to be bailed out..”
Adam didn’t ask or hesitate. When his father was in this mood, it was best
to follow the bull not to corral him.
Catherine and the two aunts were getting some mighty strange stares in town. Stopping at the dress shop, Mrs. Pinrod turned her sign from open to close before they reached the door. “What the blazes is going on in this town.” Aunt Sally said.
Mrs. Teasdale walked stiffly by the three ladies. “Mrs. Teasdale...how
are...you?” Catherine said but the words died on her lips as the scowl she
received was filled with disgust.
“Something is terribly wrong here...” Sue said.
The three baffled ladies went to the general store. “I want some answers and the general store will be the place to get them.” Catherine said.
Entering the store, a gasp from a few of the patrons made the three ladies
turn around. “Well, of all the nerve. She actually showed her face in town.”
“Are you talking to me Mrs. Roberts?”
“Pregnant by one man, and trying to wed another, scandalous just scandalous.”
“Pregnant, ME?”Catherine said.
“That is what your husband is saying. Telling the whole town. Poor Ben,
he never saw you coming did he!!”
“There is Ben now. Probably going to put you on the next stage out.!” She hissed.
Catherine and the two aunts headed toward Ben and Adam.
“Do you know what is going on, there is a terrible rumor...Ben you look
so angry...what is it?
“It’s John Brown, he told the whole town that you are carrying his child
and you are still married to him.”
Catherine went completely pale. “Ben, what are we going to do?”
“You, Aunt Sally and Susan are going to stay at the hotel and wait for Adam
and I.”
John Brown woke with a splitting headache. The pain increased ten fold
with the pounding outside his door.
“Christ, stop that pounding, I am coming.” John said.
As soon as John Brown opened that door Ben had him by the throat. Dragging
the half dressed man downstairs into the street, he dumped John Brown into
the horse trough.
The town crowded around main street watching Ben Cartwright literally toss that city slicker without breaking a sweat.
“Now that you are somewhat sobber you tell these good people the truth.
Is your divorce to Catherine Brown final or not!”
Seeing the murderous look in Ben’s eyes, John Brown suddenly felt fearful.
“Y-yes. Years ago. Our marriage was annulled.”
Since that time which was about six years ago, have you seen Catherine Brown?
And I warn you John Brown any lie that slips from that mouth today may well
cost you more than you are willing to part with.”
“No, I haven’t seen Catherine in six years. I lied, guess drink got the best of me.”
The crowd called for John Brown to be taken out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered, snaked behind a horse, and numerous other unpleasant ways to rid the town of John Brown. He was allowed to leave on the stage.
Adam went to the dress shop with Ben and talked to a few ladies he knew had snubbed Catherine. Smoothing their feathers and convincing them Catherine was not married and certainly not with child was a daunting task. Aunt Sue and Sally appeared next to Adam. Boys, you go console Catherine, she is still a might shook up over this. We will meet you in a little bit.
Mrs. Pinrod and Mrs. Teasdale both had no intention of allowing such scandal
to go unanswered. Ben had told them what was the truth, they chose to believe
rumors and hurtful gossip. Catherine was an outsider, not a Virginia City
resident, not yet anyway.
“Hello ladies, we understand that you two ladies are very prominent and
outspoken in this town.”
“Just how may we help you?” Mrs. Pinrod said. If Sally didn’t know better,
she would swear Mrs. Pinrod nose rose higher with every word.
“Catherine Brown is a victim, her no good first husband tried to blackmail
her, shame her and use you good women as the very weapon against her. Now
I know, you were much to smart to fall for such ridiculous lies.”
“He did seem arrogant.” Mrs. Teasdale conceded.
“Now, Mr. Cartwright is going to be married this weekend. I know you will
do your upmost to help Catherine with all she requires to make Ben and Catherine’s
day a special one, won’t we ladies?”
“Yes, the Cartwright’s are very good people and deserve nothing less.” Mrs.
Pinrod said.
Catherine picked up her lace items from Mrs. Pinrod’s shop. At first she was unsure what to expect. Then a hoard of women including the aunts all joined her in a buzzing flurry of shopping and planning. Ben and Adam waited patiently outside.
“Adam, I have a feeling this wedding will be no small affair.”
“I think you are right Pa. The whole town is involved one way or another.”
The wedding day dawned with a nervous bride. Catherine did not close her
eyes more than an hour that night. She was happy Meag and her aunts were
around just for their continuous support. Lin Se had fixed her a special
bath of lavender and rose petals.
Meag slipped out of the room to check on her father in law. “How are you
faring Pa?”
“I am wonderful Meag, you just get my lady there on time, I will do the
rest.” Ben said with a wink.
“She is as nervous as a cat in a rocking chair factory.” Meag said giving
Ben a kiss on his cheek.
“She will be fine, I’ll be fine. Remember your wedding day, you were in
the same shape.”
“Yes, and you made it so wonderful.” Meag said squeezing his arm.
“I think I had a little to do with that wonderful part.”
“Yes you did, you insufferable man, a lot to do with it.” Meag said being
swept up in his arms.
As the time neared for the ceremony, wagons and carriages started appearing
over the ridge heading toward the ranch.
“Pa, I think you might as well forget about a small ceremony or small anything,
look over there.”
Little Joe said pointing.
“By golly that must be the...whole dang town...look Pa..Catherine.”
Hop Sing scowled, he knew there was not enough cake let alone other food
to stretch that far.
“Don’t you worry Hop Sing, those folks are bring dishes of food and tables..it
will be great.” Hoss said trying to calm Hop Sing.
The ceremony started later than expected due to the new organization of the hoard of people. Music played gently as Catherine and Ben entered into their vows. He kissed her tenderly as the sun set on their wedding. With a whoop and a holler, the new lady of the Ponderosa was introduced to the crowd. Everyone cheered and shouted. Dancing and good food marked this day as one not only the Cartwrights would remember but the whole town. By the time the wedded couple were ready to leave they had a hard time saying goodbye to everyone. Adam and Meag, had they honeymoon hideaway ready for them. Hoss and Joe had said their congratulations and promised to be up in time for chores the next day. Following up on that promise would be a chore in itself with all the celebration.
Meag took Adam aside, they danced closely. “Adam I hope they are always
this happy, although you Cartwright men are a challenge.”
Snickering at her, Adam kissed her favorite place, well second favorite,
behind her ear. “I am sure you put up with a whole hell of a lot don’t you
Meag Cartwright.”
“Umm more than I can..endure..some..oh yes right there..what were we saying?”
Meag her eyes filled with desire. She took his hand to her ‘bump’. He felt
the baby kick. Looking up in awe, Meag smiled and hugged him. “She didn’t
want to be left out.”
Adam rolled his eyes kissing her forehead. “No he didn’t.”
Everyone danced to the lively music. The aunts were not ones to sit while
music played. They would dance every dance. Joe even danced, he didn’t think
girls were so awful as Seth had told him. In fact Mary Jane had asked him
to sit and eat with her.
Hoss too found females who were eager to dance and talk to him. He was flushed
red, but enjoyed himself. It was a great party, one for the books.
Ben carried Catherine into their little hideaway. Food, candle light softly
glowing. The fireplace had been stoked to warm the small cottage against
the night chill. Meag had put rose petals in the bed and turned down the
covers.
“Looks so romantic I could cry my love.” Catherine said.
“It is perfect. I must commend Meag and Lin Se for doing this so quickly.
We didn’t give h er a lot of time.
“Hold me dearest.” Catherine said. She was as shaking from nerves.
“I want to make you happy all of your days.” Ben said kissing her deeply.
“You can start by undoing my gown, I want to be in your arms, I want to
make love to you Ben.”
Undoing the buttons took more patience than Ben thought he could muster.
The buttons were tiny and numerous. Lace, pearls and a silk slid sensuously
down her shoulders exposing h er satin chemise. Her hose was held by ribbon
garters, which Ben undid one at a time rubbing upward the back of her legs
to her bare thighs. Taking an intake of breath, his concentration of undressing
her was interrupted by her taking his hand up to her mouth and kissing his
hands, his fingers so softly he went immediately hard with lust.
He finished undressing her on the bed. He had to be inside her. He needed
her, needed to feel alive and be able to love again. She had given him a
new life, a new heart again.
Two months passed on the Ponderosa. The house Meag and Adam were building
progressed when weather permitted. At seven months into her pregnancy, Meag
was irritable at her not being able to do much these days. “Good thing I
have a book to work on, or I would have to go pound some nails at the house
or something.”
“You started a new book sweetheart?” Adam asked at breakfast.
“Yes, I will need to go to town and do some umm research on the material.”
“I can take you Meag. But I wanted to work on our house this week.”
“I don’t need you to take me. I can take myself.”
“You will not, you are too pregnant to travel that far.”
“Two months to go and I am not, I can still see my shoes Adam Cartwright.”
“Barely.”
“What was that?” Meag asked irritated.
“I said, yes dear. But no you are not going into town, the snow is just
melting, the roads are still slick and icy.”
“Insufferable man” Meag said stomping off.
“Stubborn.” Adam said following her.
Adam left for the house to work on it. He desperately wanted his baby born
in that house. Meag desperately wanted a cookie at the moment. That craving
never left her all these months. Hop Sing baked her cookies and kept a supply
in her bedroom.
Ben and Catherine were going into town. “Pa, can I ride with you in the
carriage? I want to get out of the house for awhile.” Meag asked hopefully.
“Where’s Adam sweetheart?” Ben asked.
“At our house working he is a man obsessed lately.”
“When you are very into the writing of your books, you too are obsessed
or should I say possessed until it’s completion.”
“I am not as bad as Adam, no way.”
“Yes you are.” They both answered.
Halfway to town Meag began to feel funny. She felt a tug on her lower region.
“Pa, please stop a moment, please.”
Ben stopped the carriage, concerned for Meag and the way she was looking
at the moment.
“Meag, tell me what are you feeling?”
“Oh Pa, I feel pain, I felt a pain. Get me home, please.”
Turning the carriage around she was wrapped tightly in a blanket in the
carriage. Catherine held onto her as tight as she would dare.
Getting home, Ben told Hoss to go for the doctor and Joe to go for Adam.
Carrying Meag upstairs he called for Hop Sing and Lin Se for help.
Adam was busy working on the upstairs bedroom when Joe burst inside the
door. “Adam, come quick it’s Meag.
The doctor did not get there until midnight. “Meag, I can’t stop the pains,
this baby wants to enter this world early. Very early.
“She won’t make it, it’s too soon.” Meag cried. Adam held her hand. He felt
the curse he has lived under concerning his mother, Inger and Marie were
now ensorceled around Meag and their baby.”
“The baby has a strong heart beat, have faith Meag.” Adam said with tears
welling in his eyes.
Meag started breathing harder. “It’s that pressure, I want to push. I have
to push.”
The doctor prepared himself to deliver the baby. It was two months premature,
most likely Adam and Meag’s first child was not to be.
The delivery was relatively normal, the baby’s entry into the world took
only a few hours. “It’s a girl darling, just as you said.” Adam said tears
falling freely now.
The baby made a mewling noise, tiny she only could have weighed two pounds
at most. Hop Sing wrapped her up and took her abruptly away. I need to help
Missy so breathe better.”
Meag looked panicked.
“I will check on her. Maybe you should pick a name while I tend to Meag.”
Doc Martin said. He made sure Meag was fine after her delivery. She wanted
to nurse the baby but the baby was too weak to suckle.
“Adam, tell me my baby will be ok.” Meag cried.
“She will be ok, she will be wonderful. Now give her a name.”
“I want to see her.” Meag said
“Give her a name damn it. She needs you to do that. Once we do, she will
be forever ours.”
“ELIZABETH SUE CARTWRIGHT, now bring her to me.” Meag cried.
Hop Sing brought the tiny bundle ever so gently to her mother. Lin Se told
her to try to suckle her. The baby’s mouth was much too tiny for such a
feat. Hop Sing rigged a tiny nipple that fit the baby’s mouth. Within the
hour, the tiny little girl was eating. Meag and Adam spent their first terrifying
night as parents praying she would continue to thrive. Each hour was challenge,
a blessing, hope.
Joe and Hoss could not believe how tiny their niece was. Hop Sing made a
tiny warm box they baby slept near the stove. He made a steaming tent to
place her in for her tiny lungs. Three days passed giving Elizabeth life.
She was stubbornly fighting the odds, day by day.
“She is like you, see that black tuft of hair, you watch she will burst
out in curls. Oh Adam tell me..”
Adam knew what she was asking, a promise their baby would live, that he
could not do.
“She is a Cartwright, she fights every minute darling. We must enjoy the
gift of her every minute.”
Meag cried on his shoulder. “I will Adam, every second.”
Ben fed the baby and held her over his shoulder. The two went to sleep
in his favorite chair. His heart burst with pride on how the tiny baby fought
the odds day by day. Hop Sing insisted on not letting Elizabeth far from
his sight. He gave her regular intervals with steam, made sure she was covered
from head to toe in warmth.
Doc Martin came by the end of the first week, expecting to see a failing
infant. Instead he found a whole family devoted to a two pound baby girl
on an around the clock basis. “I’ll be damned, that baby seems to h ave
gained some weight. “She is even yelling a whole lot now.” Joe said rolling
his eyes.
Doc Martin examined the babe. She was strong, growing and thriving. Just
like the family she was born into, strong-growing-and thriving on love.
The End
