Ben was startled by the three sons who apparently followed him to this private spot. With an air of anger he stepped from his hidden seclusion crooking his finger to the three to stand before him.
"I distinctly told you, Adam Stoddard Cartwright and you, Eric Benjamin
Cartwright to move that herd to the north pasture this morning. Did I NOT?"
Ben roared making the two sons wince.
"Yes Pa, but ..you are acting..so..Yes sir you did." Hoss stammered.
Yes sir Pa, we thought you might need someone to talk..."
"QUIET!" Ben cut off Adam with one look.
"And you Joseph Francis, what are you doing here. Not only are you
on a past week restriction to the perimeters of the ranch house and barn,
you have chores, lots of chores to keep you busy till dusk. NOW GET!"
But Pa..we were...yes sir I am on my way sir. You don't have to worry Pa"
You might have to worry if I catch you three following me again. There
is nothing here for you to see and if I choose some solitude from the three
of you, who would blame me.
All of you get to work." Ben turned and hearing the three horses ride
off, took a deep
breath to relax.
Back on his blanket he took pen to paper and continued his letter to a
Miss Ella Bentworth. Ben had met this beauty in San Francisco and has not
been able to get her off his mind. He would make amends to his sons for
his brisk behaviour of late, but for now he was composing a sonnet sure
to woo the heart of his new love.
