I WONDER WHAT THOSE TWO ARE PLOTTING
NOW...
BY MOREAU
It has been too quiet, too damn quiet. Adam thought to himself. Once Pa left for Sacramento a week ago, Joe had set Adam’s dresser drawers upside down, Hoss had tied his long johns in knots that a sailor would have a hard time with and just two days ago his soap had mysteriously blackened his hands once he dipped it in water. Adam had a show down with his brothers and warned them one more practical joke and he would make them sorry, very sorry.
Two apologies and a piece offering of doing Adam’s barn chores smoothed over Adam’s temper. That was two days ago. Not a prank or even a cross word since then. Pa always said, if it seems too good to be true, it usually was. Adam didn’t trust those brothers of his no more than he could toss them.
“Morning Adam” Hoss chirped as he sat in his usual seat at the breakfast
table.
“Morning” Adam answered looking at Hoss as if to find out what they were
up to by just looking.
“Somethin’ wrong older brother?” Hoss asked innocently.
“You’re not fooling anyone Hoss, so if I were you I would just call it quits.”
Adam said sipping his coffee.
“I hope you’re feeling ok big brother, seems to me you been a mite jumpy
lately.” Hoss said.
“Morning Adam” Joe said popping a biscuit in his mouth.
“Joe, I am going to tell you what I told Hoss. You two are not fooling anyone
with that innocent act. I warned you both. I find you playing one more prank
on me I will make you sorry and I mean it.” Adam said irritably
“Adam, we heard you days ago. Honest, no pranks big brother. You are right.
We have a lot to do around here and pranks are non-productive as you say.
So relax Adam really, nobody is playing pranks.” Joe said with a doe-eyed
straight face.
“I am going to town. You two finish that fence Pa wanted fixed. I’ll be back later.”Adam said grumpily.
As Adam closed the door with a slam, Joe and Hoss looked at each other and laughed. ‘You’re right Joe, all we had to do is nothing and he makes himself crazy asking himself “What are those two are Plotting Now!!
The End
